WoW Moviewatch: All About My Base
When Sharm came out with the garrison-themed musical parody All About My Base, I figured it would only be a matter of time before we saw a machinima created for it, and I was right. Music video master Khayllys has done it again, creating another musical machinima that perfectly accompanies Sharm's music. Khayllys' work is always solid -- the video uses the new model and scenery of Warlords to full effect here. The only minor complaint I have is the choice of the camera-shaking effect in so many scenes. Used once or twice it's fine, but used in swift and repeated succession, it kind of gives me a headache. It's a minor complaint though, as I said, and the video itself is well worth the watch. If you like the machinima, be sure to hop over to Khayllys' Youtube channel for plenty more. WoW Moviewatch: Walking in the Air
Today's music video machinima comes from Sharm and WoPairs -- Sharm did the singing and WoPairs set it to machinima of some of Warlords of Draenor's gorgeous scenery (with a cameo from Pepe). The song itself is a cover of "Walking in the Air" from the children's movie The Snowman, but it honestly works perfectly in a WoW setting (yes, even the mention of a sea monster is in the original). The scenery in Warlords, combined with the new high-rez models, seem like ideal fodder for machinima-makers, and it's great to see them taking advantage of the world's new settings -- here's to more machinima in the new year! WoW Moviewatch: You Stole My Toon
Work Warning: A little cursing. We shared a video from Rogahar the other day, but this isn't the first collaboration from that master of music machinima. You Stole My Toon features a song by Sharm and incredible graphics from Rogahar. The final scene took 50 hours to render; that's not chump change. Here's what Rogahar had to say about the video: Anybody who's felt the sting of character/account theft in any game should be able to sympathise here, and god knows how we all wish we could hunt down and repeatedly murder the stealing little [expletive deleted]s. WoW Moviewatch: Young & Beautiful
This video was created by Nan for Sharm's cover of Young & Beautiful. That's a mouthful, isn't it? While I can't say that the video looks young, it certainly looks beautiful. Lots of warm colors and flowing scenery presents a heat to Sharm's singing, which is as smooth and amazing as we've all come to expect from her. About the only down side to this video is that it occasionally suffers from shaky-cam, but that's forgivable considering you can't make it through an hour of TV these days with the curse of shaky-cam. WoW Moviewatch: I Went Fire On My Mage
Adam didn't convince me to do Moviewatch today -- I just decided to help myself to the job. I have a soft spot in my heart for machinima, mostly because I've always wanted to be a machinima artist myself. Unfortunately, I'm held back by the fact that I use a Mac. Yeah ... Anyway, today's video is a music video for Sharm's I Went Fire On My Mage, a parody of Set Fire to the Rain by Adele. The parody tells the story of an arcane mage who decides to switch specs to fire after she realizes she doesn't have the physical endurance to continue playing arcane. (That will make more sense after you watch the video.) Sharm's lyrics are brilliantly funny and fit in well with the original music. In terms of the lyrics, it's definitely one of the stronger WoW music parodies I've heard. And as usual, she nails the execution of the song with her lovely voice. What else would you expect by now? The video was created by machinima artist Rogahar, who uses a combination of footage from in-game capture and WoW Model Viewer. The video adds a lot to the song, impressing a tone to it which I don't think I'd have noticed nearly as much if I'd just heard the song on its own. The opening and closing shots of the video in particular really set a sad and then remorseful mood to the story. My only complaint with the video is that by the third chorus, some of the images become a bit too repetitive, but seeing as this is Rogahar's first machinima (to my knowledge), I think it's forgiveable. WoW Moviewatch: Hunter
Hunter by Sharm is kind of an odd critter. Originally created as an open collaboration, this video obviously features Sharm performing the vocals. And while the song has lingered around a while, it was lacking a video to go with it. Enter Khayllys, who took the song and matched it to some interesting animation. The final result is a curious departure from the kind of thing we usually see from Sharm. I definitely liked it, but I found myself a little confused by what was going on. Open collaborations tend to be an experiential thing, though, so getting caught up after that isn't incredibly helpful. Ultimately, I'm curious to see what you folks think of the final piece. Cranius and Sharm team up for duo album
Folks who enjoy the World of Warcraft musical scene probably already recognize the names Cranius and Sharm. Individually, these two people have each created huge swaths of music that've inspired WoW players for year. That's why it's so exciting that the two of them are teaming up to release a duo album. The album will consist of entirely original work -- no parodies, riffs, or mere covers of other people's songs. The pair had tried to make the collaboration work while Sharm was in the U.K., but things weren't working out so well. What to do? Sharm jumped on a plane and flew out to Seattle, where Sharm and Cranius will spend the next few months recording the album. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly and quickly. We can't wait to hear the results! And while it's exciting that the album is entirely original, we wouldn't hate a fresh cover of Darrowshire with some duet action.
WoW Moviewatch: WoW Night
WoW Night is a much older movie from Yumfries, featuring additional vocals from Sharm and Wick, not to mention an appearance from the ineffable Panser. Really, WoW Night is an anthemic salute to every player who looks forward to logging in and killing some internet dragons. This video first hit the tubes back in 2009. Nearly three years later, it's still awesome. Sure, the underlying tunes were crafted by a famous pop band, but the off-the-cuff chanting and parody singing also stand the test of time. WoW Moviewatch: Dragonwrath: A Legendary Musical
What do you get when you cross Nananea and Sharm? A musical -- but not just any musical. You get Dragonwrath: A Legendary Musical. Set aside some time, kick your feet up, and relax with an awesome machinima that's truly a breath of fresh, beautiful air. The plot's essentially about getting Dragonwrath, so I'm not going to belabor that. I want to focus on the amazing singing, fun lyrics, and awesome storybook style. I'm so happy to see folks revisiting these kind of productions; while I embrace all forms of machinima, this kind of music and story amalgam has always been my favorite. WoW Moviewatch: Like a Boss
OK, I know what you're expecting with this video. I'll admit that I was expecting the same thing. You release a song called Like a Boss, and people start looking for synergy, bagels, and forever-alone land masses. That is definitely not this video. Starwarspunk got together with Sharm and performed Like a Boss as a tribute to the boss fights in WoW. The song is actually quite amazing, with plenty of musical references to the game's fights and a big heaping of irony. Not content with a mere vocal track, Taurimovies scooped up the soundtrack and created the video you see above. There's virtually nothing I don't like about this video. WoW Moviewatch: ZA
Work Warning: There's a bit of cursing. Be warned! Who's tired of running ZA to get the darn bear mount already? I'll admit, I've given up. Winning the roll is more difficult than accomplishing the timed run. You can imagine my cathartic relief when Sharm busted out this parody addressing that exact issue. ZA is a take-off of Dolly Parton's Jolene. (Look, White Stripes fan, I dig it. Their cover was pretty good, but they were barely born when Parton was crooning this song out.) While Jolene itself has always given me odd feminist cognitive dissonance, ZA abandons that moral ambiguity in favor of simply lambasting the infuriating RNG behind the bear mount. I was very happy to see Sharm tackle this song because I think it shows off the strength of her vocals very well. Sharm's a fascinating person and a lot of fun to follow, but it'd been a little while since we've really sen the power of her guns. WoW Moviewatch: Break the Trees
Break the Trees is a beautiful, cohesive music video; we don't see as many of these as we once did. Sharm provides the vocals, while the animation is created by Khayllys. The video is fairly short, only clocking in a little over two minutes. My only real criticism of this music video is that the blur and glow effect felt a little overdone. Don't get me wrong -- the whole thing was lovely. But there's only so much blur and glow a man can take before his head starts hurting. Even with that critique in place, though, I still enjoyed Break the Trees and fervently hope to see more like it in the future. Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: Still Subscribed
The new video from Obsidian Brand and Blue Dragon Productions features the vocal stylings of Sharm. The team was feeling inspired by Portal's theme song, Still Alive, and couldn't help themselves -- they had to convert it over to our beloved WoW. Still Subscribed is somewhere between a love letter from Blizzard and a deep, lyrical complaint about the state of the game. While I don't necessarily agree with the editorial stance about the developers, the video is incredibly well performed and executed. The music is awesome, of course, but the words manage to maintain the same poetry as the original. Still Subscribed is just very well done. This is definitely an excellent piece. WoW Moviewatch: Alexstrasza
It's been a while since we've had a re-run of Alexstrasza. As we all get geared up to mount Deathwing and ride him into the ground, it's time we take a moment and look back at the history of the red lady. This video has always been a favorite of mine. Granted, the original song was created by Lady Gaga. I acknowledge that this fact alone disqualifies this song for play in many parts of the country, but not here. The tune is catchy, the lyrics were interpreted well into WoW, and the performance was dead on. WoW Moviewatch: Dire Wolves
Work warning: Violence exists in this video. You're as shocked as I am. This video from Bloodvein is a trailer for a rated BG team called Dire Wolves. If you don't recognize the computer's voice, we'll help you out: That's none other than the incredibly talented Sharm. We've seen a lot of guild trailers and inspirational spots for raid teams, but this is the first trailer for a rated battleground group that I can recall. The video eschews plot but is still fairly epic. I can definitely see this video helping to get members psyched and pumped up before some rated BG matches. The Windows joke at the end is also well worth the laugh. The animation and graphics are amazing as always, which is what we've come to expect from Bloodvein. WoW Moviewatch: Draenei
Draenei by Sharm is sort of a love song to one of the finest races on Azeroth. (That's the draenei, in case that's not clear.) The video was mostly created to apply some images to the song, although the video is obviously mostly centered on the music. The lyrics are just fine; I don't mean to disparage them, it's just that my focus on this piece is how well Sharm performs the song. She's really got one hell of a voice, and she manages to bring the guns to nearly every piece of music she performs. By the way, this is a parody of Katy Perry's E.T., if you don't recognize it. WoW Moviewatch: Why Can't I Raid?
Why Can't I Raid? was among my first exposures to the talented Sharm (who I called TaintedLore back then). The video itself was created by Leonarddum. While the auto-tune was a tad thick in this performance, that just mirrors the use of auto-tune in Rihanna's Unfaithful. The lyrics paint the heartbroken disappointment of a raider who can never quite get a raiding spot. That's the kind of thing that can just crush a player's interest in the game after a while, and Sharm does a good job of illustrating the frustration. While I doubt she intended this parody to be an intense analysis of the game, I can't help but think there are more than a few raid leaders who would benefit by listening to it. WoW Moviewatch: I Kissed An Orc
What can you say about I Kissed an Orc? The performance by Sharm is still amazingly strong, and Milly's video is as beautiful as you could want. This video is simply fun and amusing; the machinima has the same sense of fun as the lyrics. We have featured this video previously but felt like a great time to go back and give it another look. It's interesting how the shots of Dalaran don't feel particularly dated yet; that was still the most recent place that Horde and Alliance blended together. Cataclysm has separated the factions, and we just don't get that face time with the opposing faction now. Dalaran will remain the most recent "neutral" place for a long, long time. WoW machinima music video takes on R.E.M.
We don't know about you, but seeing WoW machinima in this clip instead of R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe is totally fine. And the song -- a rendition of "It's the End of the World" by Nyhm & Sharm -- could be more gracefully sung, sure, but it's really the heart coming through that counts.
WoW Moviewatch: End of the World (of Warcraft)
I never usually answer my phone when the number is blocked, but this time, I had a hunch. Swiping across the screen, the gravelly voice immediately came across the line. My eyes narrowed, grip tightening around the metal frame. "We have Gray. You know what we want." This time ... it's personal. Nymh and Sharm, two of the most prolific machinima voices out there, come together for End of the World (of Warcraft), a parody of R.E.M.'s awesome It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) . The vocals are on par with other Nymh offerings, and I did enjoy the lyrics, giving it a big "A" for effort. Some of the rhymes are there for filler purpose, but is pretty good for an R.E.M. parody. I am enjoying these refreshing reminders that WoW really is changing substantially in less than a month, and sometimes the gravity of that is a little bit lost on me. Enjoy.
