Guitar Hero DS bundle is almost perfect
We love our two-tone DSes around these parts, and the model that will ship as part of the Guitar Hero: On Tour bundle is especially delicious. Frankly, silver and black will always be a winning combination. It's a color scheme that cannot fail to look classy and sleek.Alas, whoever designed this model didn't stop at just silver and black, but also decided to slap that ugly transfer onto the DS's upper lid. We appreciate some Guitar Hero branding was probably required for this, but couldn't it have been a little ... subtler? For those of you who are fans, Toys "R" Us currently has this down for a June 29th release on its site, one week after the game itself hits shelves.%Gallery-19362%[Via Go Nintendo]
Chris Greenhough06.03.2008Wiimote cufflinks, for the Wii owner who has everything
"For those times that you are away from your beloved gaming system, at least you can pretend to be fighting your evil nemesis, Gargamel."Rather than referencing the arch-nemesis of the Smurfs, we presume the folks at Cufflinks.com actually meant to say Ganon. Still, we'll forgive them the odd error, because hey, these sterling silver Wiimote cufflinks are pretty much the dapperest accessories we've ever seen for Wii lovers. They're fully reversible thanks to the tiny silver nunchuk on the end, and are just about discreet enough for your next wedding/awards ceremony/court appearance. But before you reach for your wallet, know this: at $150, they're not that much cheaper than a Wii itself.[Via Engadget]
Chris Greenhough04.23.2008Satin Silver PS3 bundled with Yakuza 3
After our initial wave of disappointment dissipated with the announcement that SCEA had no plans of bringing the Satin Silver PS3 stateside, we were actually starting to feel pretty good, that is until we saw the Satin Silver Yakuza 3 bundle. Now our feelings of woe have returned tenfold. Limited to only 1,000 units, the Yakuza 3 PS3 bundle will be released in Japan on March 6 (the same day as the regular Satin Silver PS3) for about $440 and will include some really neato dragon stickers. However, like the regular Satin Silver PS3, it won't come with a DualShock 3, but who needs that when you can come home with Yakuza 3, right? What makes this even worse for us is that Sega has yet to confirm a Western release of the game. Sega, can you please end our agony and just tell us when we can expect Yakuza 3? [Via Kotaku]
Chris Powell02.06.2008SCEA: No plans for silver PS3 in North America
Do you remember last generation when Japan seemingly received new colored PS2s each week and then Sony never bothered to bring them to the West until much, much later? Well, it appears as if that trend is continuing with the PlayStation 3 as Sony Japan announced that the 40GB Satin Silver PS3 will hit Japan early next month. But do you think Sony Computer Entertainment America has plans to do the same? Not so much according to an SCEA representative who told IGN, "there are no plans for a silver PS3 in North America at this time."While the news is disappointing for those few gamers who have been holding off for a different colored PS3, we rest assured knowing that Sony will surely bring these over at some point. After all, didn't the PSP just receive a silver makeover?
Chris Powell02.06.2008Satin Silver PS3 hitting Japan on March 6th
We all know the Japanese love their gaming systems in many different colours, which is why it's no surprise that Sony has announced that another PS3 colour is being released in the region on March 6th of this year for 39,980 yen. The "Satin Silver" PS3 is another member of the 40GB SKU which Sony have stated many times that they are focusing on in the Japanese and European region. A Dual Shock 3 will also be released in Silver at the same time, priced at 5,500 yen, but will not come bundled with the console. This seems to us to be a wasted opportunity to start phasing out the Sixaxis, which is what ultimately should happen. Of course, putting a DS3 in the box would probably raise the price and after two price drops in its first year, a price raise, even with a good reason, would be risky business on Sony's part.[Via Engadget]%Gallery-15376%
Jem Alexander02.05.2008Silver DS Lite, now with less ... silver
We often poke fun at custom Lites (usually with good reason, but sometimes, just because), but this one actually looks alright. The new Gloss Silver DS Lites are pretty, but a little plain; the buttons are also silver, so the whole thing is very monochromatic. The original Phat was also silver, but had black buttons to shake things up a little. Maybe we like variety, or maybe we're just nostalgic for the good ol' days of less battery power, but this Lite Redux that turned up on eBay really seems like the best of both worlds. It's got the sleek, slender sophistication of the silver Lite, but the black buttons just scream "old school." The price ($175) may be a little high for our tastes, but hey -- we're on board with the idea.

Mmmm, the LG Prada (AKA, LG-KE850) was just turned out in silver. 18 European countries including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy will see the new version of LG's touchscreen later this month. Besides the color change the phone now features a proper on-screen QWERTY, not just T9 -- thank you LG! Really, that's all we could hope for. %Gallery-13698%[Via Akihabara News]
Thomas Ricker01.14.2008HP's Pearl -- er, "Silver" smartphone
Palm's not the only company bringing some new Windows Mobile kit to Vodafone this year -- Boy Genius Report's scoopage of Voda's '08 lineup includes a new HP, too. The "Silver" (a codename, we assume) should put the kinda sad iPAQ 510 out of business and appears to take a page straight outta the Pearl's book, right down to the WiFi, GPS, and SureType keyboard (which is surprisingly actually identified as "SureType," a RIM trademark). Unlike the Pearl, though, this sucker rocks Windows Mobile 6 Standard and HSDPA -- a whopping 7.2Mbps of it. Look for it in July for about £250 ($494).
Chris Ziegler01.05.2008Xbox Live Silver members must wait for free content
The release of the Fall Update has brought another "feature" that'll put a very bad taste in Xbox Live Silver members' mouths.Last night, Major Nelson revealed that starting now, Silver members will get to download free XBLM content one week after Xbox Live Gold members get access. This week long delay in getting free content is justified by Gold members paying for their subscription. And maybe that's how it should be. Gold members actually being treated as if they're getting perks for paying for Xbox Live. Here at X3F, we are Gold subscribers so we guess we're a bit biased and unsympathetic to our Silver brethren. But now that we think about it, it's kind of sad to know that Silver members can't get in on the hot Grunt gamer pic love until next week. Sad stuff indeed ...
Dustin Burg12.05.2007Nintendo of Europe promotes their product to Brits and jealous bloggers
Before you guys in the U.S. (like us) get too excited, by "here", the ad means "the U.K." Nintendo sent out these e-mail advertisements for the new, shiny Metallic Silver DS Lite, reminding European shiny-stuff fans that their DS has arrived. "Effortlessly stylish," the ad copy reads, "the DS Lite Silver is just one more good reason to join the 14 million other people across Europe who have already got their hands on a Nintendo DS."Depending on your geographical location, your current DS Lite ownership status, and your color preferences, this email could be a welcome blip in your inbox. But we have to wonder-- who that isn't already enough of a Nintendo fan to possess a DS would be on their mailing list? The ad copy sounds like it's aimed at new DS gamers and not upgraders. Check after the break for the whole ad image.
JC Fletcher10.17.2007Flickr Find: 40 Nanos laid out
Aaron bought 40 of the new iPod nanos for a client (all he says is that he had to put content on them), and apparently was struck by how beautiful they were all lined up together, so he got a quick photo shoot set up on Flickr. While I called them stubby and squished before, I have to admit that they look pretty darn elegant in these pics. I'm still not buying one (an iPhone is going to be my next purchase, very soon here), but the design is growing on me a little bit. I still think the scroll wheel looks weird, though-- it balances perfectly on the old iPods, and here it's too small and leaves too much space open on the sides. I'm no Ive, but I know what I like. Thanks, AaronS!
Mike Schramm09.22.2007Examear: helping students make the best of exam day
Sure, quite a few intrepid students have tried to slip on an earpiece of some sort to gain an unfair advantage come test time, but those DIY attempts oftentimes lack the top-notch qualities found in professional, in-ear cheating liaisons. Enter Examear, which aims to "help students succeed" by offering up a trio of wireless earphones that enable test takers to hear recorded content on a nearby DAP or the voice of an abettor. Each of the models fit sneakily within your ear and sport varying levels of battery life / features, and while you can snag the low-ender for a mere $185, the Bluetooth-equipped platinum edition looks to be the best bet for the avid cheater at $300. 'Course, we certainly wouldn't recommend nor condone actually using these things for subverting an exam, but presenters who often forget their lines and those who long to be an undercover spy could certainly find a good bit of utility here, too.[Via MetaFilter]
Darren Murph08.20.2007Blinged out iPod Shuffle doesn't come cheap
For the small price of 248,000 Norwegian Kroner (around $40,000) you can pick up a concentrated mix of gold, diamonds, and... iPod Shuffle. There's not a lot more to this blinged out creation: why anyone would want to place forty gees worth of precious carbon on a $99 gadget, we'll never know.[Thanks, Eirik S.]
Conrad Quilty-Harper08.20.2007Gloss Silver and Metallic Pink DS Lites now available for import
The new DS Lites have been released in Japan and have shown up on import shopping sites. That's right, for only $179 + shipping, you can have a DS Lite in one of the two new Japan-exclusive colors! You have your choice of Like the Regular DS Phat Color but on a Lite, or Like the Pink One but Shinier. What do you think-- Gloss Silver or Gross Silver? Metallic Pink or Me-tacky Pink?
JC Fletcher07.13.2007Now you're silversmithing with power
We've wasted our lives. What have we been doing all these years, while we could have been learning to work with gold, silver and platinum jewelry, and sharing handmade Nintendo jewelry with our friends and loved ones? Oh, right, going to school and having jobs. And also actually playing games.Third Project Juno has made some stuff that we would actually consider wearing, including a lot of Zelda jewelry. Our favorite is the D-pad necklace pictured here.[Via Wonderland]
JC Fletcher06.21.2007It's a Wonderful DS Lite
Square Enix's Wonderful World edition DS Lite marks the first of what we're sure will be many Gloss Silver bundles to grace Japan, but will never -- absolutely never -- see an official release in the states. Set for release along with the game this June 27th, the limited edition handheld shows of the "It's a Wonderful World" logo and Tetsuya Nomura's skull badge design. Pricing for the set hasn't been announced yet, but expect to pay a king's ransom if you plan on importing.
Eric Caoili05.31.2007Isabodywear underwear fends off cellphone radiation
If you thought donning tin foil caps was excessive, Isabodywear is out to make those contraptions looks mighty mild. While the debate about just how dangerous (or not) cellphone radiation is still rages on, there's certainly a paranoid sect that will snap up anything that claims to "protect them," and this Swiss garb maker is latching onto said opportunity. The briefs are purportedly constructed with threads made of silver, which the company claims will fend off harmful cellphone radiation; moreover, in an effort to really prove just how effective these undergarments are, it suggests that phone calls originated within the confines of your new underwear simply won't connect. Reportedly, 4,000 pairs have been created so far, and for folks willing to give these a try and fill out a survey, the first 500 of you to email in and request one will seemingly have one sent out gratis. There's no word on when you can expect the Slipways to hit the market, but they should sell for CHF29.90 ($24) apiece when retailers start stocking.[Via Textually]
Darren Murph05.20.2007Suda surprise: The Silver Case will be localized
Back at GDC, Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 announced that his Playstation text adventure The Silver Case and its cellphone sequel were getting ported to the DS. We tempered our interest in this development with doubt that the games would be released outside of Japan, due to their limited appeal and the large amount of text involved.Sometimes, we don't mind being wrong. During the Australian G03 event, Suda announced that the game, which was "a minor hit" in Japan, would receive a worldwide release. Now we should all buy it and let him know he made the right decision![Via NeoGAF]
JC Fletcher04.19.2007Sonic Boss Attack mode on Marketplace
Sonic the Hedgehog has a a few pieces of new content available on Xbox Live Marketplace. If you enjoyed the boss battles found in the game with, you might be interested in this. You can download, for 150 MS points each, "Boss Attack"s for each of the game's lead hedgehogs. Apparently, if you've completed Sonic, Shadow, or Silver's respective episode, you can use this content for what seems to be a game mode akin to Heavy Weapon's Boss Blitz, but for individual characters. Do you play the game, and would you pick this up if you do?
David Dreger03.21.2007GDC07: Classic Suda 51 weirdness hitting the DS
Suda 51's first games as part of Grasshopper Manufacture are being remade for the DS. The games, called The Silver Case and The Silver Case Ward 25, were originally released for the Playstation and mobile phones, respectively. Suda revealed this fact during his GDC keynote "Punk's Not Dead".Both are graphical text adventures; Ward 25 uses static art and the original Silver Case uses full-motion video. Unfortunately, because of the amount of text that would have to be translated, Suda isn't sure the remakes will be released outside Japan. Someone tell him that American DS players love graphical text adventures! And tell him that we <3 Grasshopper Manufacture too.
