Nintendo did a very good thing by including the Japan-only N64 3D shooter Sin & Punishment: Successor to the Earth on the Wii's Virtual Console. Now, they seem to be celebrating the global introduction of the series by including the game's protagonist, Saki Amamiya, as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.Saki brings his "Cannon Sword" to the fray, which is a--well, you can probably guess what it is. With super-slick characters like Saki and Gray Fox appearing as assist trophies, we're a little disappointed that Nintendo hasn't gone the extra mile to make them fully playable in the game. In fact, there hasn't been a new character introduced on the Brawl blog in quite some time, so maybe we'll get some interesting news in the weeks to come.

Today is an exciting day for the Virtual Console, as us living in the states are gifted with a pair of titles that we never expected to get. Sure, the price may be a bit high for these titles when compared to other games released for those systems, but it's not that much to ask for considering they're new to us. Oh, we can't wait until after 9am PST to give these titles a download: Sin and Punishment (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, 1,200 Wii Points) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) As always, be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up of this week's releases.

Wow, after a couple of weak weeks (we're not sure if that was a pun either) the Virtual Console has come back in a huge way this week with Sin and Punishment and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Though Sin and Punishment has never been formally released in North America, you probably recognize the name as the one that slips through the lips of shooter fans as they say their evening prayers every night. Sin and Punishment (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, 1,200 Wii Points) -- You're not hallucinating with that price. Not only have you had to wait seven years for it, you're also going to have to pony up a couple of extra bucks. Of course, there is some extra translation here, so you can probably justify it to yourself, especially if you're dying to experience Treasure's classic shooter. Besides, it's really good. We'd rather pay $12 for this than $10 for Yoshi's Story any day of the week. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points) -- This remake of the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is being released on its own for the first time in the U.S., and you're paying an extra buck for the privilege. Of course, you're also getting it with the original NES graphics, so maybe that's worth it to you if you're the curious sort. But please, do yourself a favor and buy Sin and Punishment first.

Fatal Fury was released on the Japanese Virtual Console yesterday-- the release wasn't shown at the time we were writing the VC Tuesday update, so we missed it. We thought we'd give it a mention because it's the first Neo Geo game on the Virtual Console! In addition to stuff that already came out that we didn't get to write about, Japan gets some bonus VC material tomorrow of the highest caliber. Super Metroid and Sin and Punishment are being released tomorrow, both of which should make up nicely for Super Thunder Blade.Say, now that PAL regions have their Hanabi Festival and Japan has surprise Thursday games, you know what would be great? Some VC bonus stuff in America.[Thanks for pointing out Fatal Fury, Almadi!]

  • Sin and Punishment rated by OFLC, English-speaking world cheers

Looks like Nintendo has come up with a clever response to one Kiwi gamer's complaint. It sounds kind of silly to complain about a lack of releases when your region is about to get Sin and Punishment on the Virtual Console. Treasure's Sin and Punishment is basically the Holy Grail of Nintendo 64 games: a shooter from a very well-respected studio, which was never released outside of Asia. It's the N64 game that even N64 haters will drool over. This OFLC rating makes an upcoming Virtual Console release a near-certainty, and an Australian release portends a release for other regions, as well. Now we're going to go play every rail shooter we own in celebration of this great news. Although we think that's pretty much just Rez, so it'll be a brief celebration.[Via NeoGAF]
