Proving that the original release was more "prototype" than "final," a downloadable expansion is in the works for eastasiasoft's PSN shmup, Söldner X 2: Final Prototype.

Soldner-X 2 has finally locked onto a release window. Coming this May, the PSN-exclusive shooter will provide more bullets and more bosses for hardcore shmup fans. Seriously, there may be too many bullets in this launch trailer (embedded after the break). With an added "challenge" mode for those of you that eat bullets for breakfast, Soldner-X 2 looks like a frustratingly fun addition for the PSN's summer catalog.%Gallery-85829%

It's no secret that shmup fans love inflicting pain on themselves. That's why they'll undoubtedly love the news that the upcoming PSN-exclusive shooter Soldner-X 2 will feature a new "Challenge" mode -- as if the game wasn't going to be challenging enough! In this new mode, players will have to complete a variety of tasks in order to earn Trophies, bonus items and additional credits. Considering the near-impossible task of earning a 100 percent in the first game, this new mode is sure to further frustrate and delight hardcore gamers. Soldner-X 2 will be available on the PlayStation Network some time this Spring. %Gallery-85829%

Eastasiasoft, the publishing branch of import retailer Play-Asia, released its first PC game in late 2007, a horizontal shooter called Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer. It came out on PSN a year later. The company has just announced its second game, this time exclusively for the PS3's PlayStation Network: Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype. Unfortunately, the lack of a PC version means no huge limited edition box!The Sidequest Studios-developed shooter is expected out this winter, but then the PSN version of the first game missed its original release date by a year. If you're really in the mood to punish yourself with a shmup, may we suggest the downloadable PS1 classic R-Types in the meantime?%Gallery-72721%

We bet some of you were hoping tomorrow's PSN releases will bring with it the side-scroller Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer. Sorry to burst your collective bubble, because according to EastAsiaSoft's forums, it's been delayed ... again. The new release date will be "late November." You guys might remember at one point, it was suppose to come out during the winter of ... 2007 -- really, what's another month's wait?[Via Siliconera]

Read more 'Soldner-X' stories Some publishers know exactly how important Trophies are. One of them is EastAsiaSoft, who wasn't shy about revealing a list of Trophies to their upcoming PSN title Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer on their official website. Since we are suckers for side-scrolling shooters, things like the 1080p resolution and Trophies are really just icing on the cake. Check out our previous post for more information on Soldner-X. • PSN shooter has funny name, scrolls sideways

With a name like Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer, it's got to be German. If there was any further doubt, the droning synth and drum machine soundtrack settles it. Yep, this PSN shooter, complete with Ye Olde School side-scrolling and – as the trailer boldly promises – the ability to "upgrade your weapons" (how novel) is from the land of Nietzsche. Fortunately, this re-imagination of the 2007 PC game has been updated with new graphics, runs at 1080p, and actually looks pretty fun. Should development continue unabated, the game will have you himmelsstürmering all the way to the PlayStation Store in Oktober.

  • Side-scrolling shooter Soldner-X headed to PSN this October

Download to PSP We haven't heard from Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer since last year, but now developer SideQuest Studios is letting us know the horizontally-scrolling shooter is on its way to the PLAYSTATION Network this October. Soldner-X puts you in the shoes of "an anti-hero mercenary and bounty hunter" who must save the Earth from an infection that spreads to both organic lifeforms and technology in "a mighty prototype star fighter." Other than the anti-hero part, it sounds like a cliché plot that gives a lone ship an excuse to take on hordes and hordes of alien enemies.Soldner-X is an updated version of a 2007 PC title, with improvements such as enhanced graphics, 1080p resolution, new music tracks, easier default difficulty, Dual Shock 3 support, optional SIXAXIS support, and of course, everyone's favorite, trophy support! • New Soldner-X trailer shows retro revival is strong

Soldner-X is import retail site Play-Asia's first attempt at publishing a video game. It's a blast from the past: a classic 2D side-scrolling shooter. Only, now with HD graphics made possible by the PS3. Already released on PC, this shooter will attempt to capture the hearts of PSN fans. Considering the amount of attention games like Super Stardust HD received, we're pretty sure that Soldner-X will be quite successful with the PS3 audience.

Up to this point, all we've seen of Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer were screenshots, but thankfully, developer Side Quest Studios has released a great gameplay trailer of the upcoming PlayStation Network downloadable game. While it doesn't seem like Söldner-X will stray too far away from the tried and true shmup recipe for success, everything we've seen from the game just looks so darn good.

  • Soldner-X arriving winter of '07 over the PSN

If you have no idea what Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer is, think back to the glory days of the original PlayStation, to when Square-Enix was still Squaresoft. They tried out different game genres, one of which was a horizontal space shooter called Einhander. The game meshed 2D and 3D in a really unique way and kicked a lot of ass. That's what nostalgia we get when staring at the Soldner-X screenshots, or those contained in our gallery below. The little power-up bar along the bottom is incredibly reminiscent of the Gradius games, too. Two of our favorite horizontal shooters combined into a pretty 720p, 60fps masterwork? We'll download. Some of the key features in the title are standard fare: unlockable difficulties, power-ups, etc. There are a few tweaks to the genre to make it stand out, though. One of these is a "tactical" element system like chaining, berserker mode, and effectiveness systems. We could draw parallels all day, but to have these all in one place is a nice effort. We can't wait to see if the "over the top" boss fights really are insane. What do you guys think? Would this be a welcome change from the dual-analog shooters plaguing the PlayStation Network?[via PS3 Forums]%Gallery-6261%
