'Sonic Riders' may have been (legally) plagiarized

Sonic the Hedgehog is known for two things: going fast and his love of chili dogs. While the blue blur is returning to the fray in a pair of new games (made independently of each other, no less) this year, the ever-vigilant folks at Unseen64 have uncovered an entry from the expedient rodent's past we'll never get to play. It was a skateboarding game called Sonic Extreme that used the groundwork of a Nickelodeon-skinned version of a game featuring Tech Deck finger-skateboard toys and was set to release on Gamecube, PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. And you thought your family tree was complicated.

Much like the comedy in the show, we felt something zany and non sequitur like the video above would fit nicely. And, if you're the one person looking at this week's releases and snatching up some title about air boarding or whatever, this might not be the topic for you. Instead, we want to hear from all of you who decided to take the plunge with Harvey Birdman. How many cases have you been through? How are you finding the game to be so far? Is it fun, are you disappointed in it?%Gallery-7527%

Some of you may not be prepared for this news. We're kind of not prepared for it ourselves. The new Sonic Riders game, Zero Gravity, has a feature that we think is great: online rankings. That's something we've asked for in more Wii games (specifically VC games, but we'll take it in anything), and we think it's a nice way for people who ... like to compete to do so.We could also see lag being a big-time problem in a racing game, especially one that uses wireless connections only for Internet play. Rankings sidestep that issue nicely. Good job, Sega! Keep showing us evidence that work is being done on this game! With the game due out in January, there's still plenty of time to add new stuff-- like graphics.

Somehow, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity manages to look worse in these screenshots than in the last ones-- jaggier, with simpler geometry and less lighting effects. Have Sega's artists implemented a "pay per polygon" program? We doubt it's anything that complex-- it's much more likely that they're just reusing the already-rough-looking engine from last generation's Sonic Riders game. Sonic fans: we know you love the character, and that you associate strongly with the earlier games. We know that some of you out there collect the comics and loved the Jaleel White-voiced cartoon. We know that it's even possible that you've enjoyed one or two Sonic games since Sonic Adventure 2. But you have to stop, for the good of the series. No amount of Sonic fandom justifies buying what Sega is selling. Just ... stop, and force Sega to either improve their output or let the series die in dignity.[Via GoNintendo]

The Wii and PS2 will be the recipients of another game starring Sega's mascot blue hedgehog, apparently, as Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity gets set to grace each console. A sequel to the lukewarm racer Sonic Riders from way back when in 2006 (we still can't believe the clothes we wore back then!), reports of the new title come from Playstation magazine PLAY.Details on the Wii-specific version are non-existent at the moment, but will include the trick system from the first title, as well as a cast of Sonic franchise characters.
