We're not sure why Willcom would feel the need to ever look beyond Sharp to supply it with badass Windows CE-based phone after badass Windows CE-based phone -- but now that we've seen the result, we're glad they did. The "nani" from Sophia Mobile (who?) rocks a glorious 800 x 480 WVGA display, WiFi, microSD expansion, a TV tuner (one-seg, we'd imagine), and Windows CE for Willcom's PHS network in Japan. We'll refrain from calling this one a hands-down winner until we see its user interface -- customized, we assume, since it's not using Windows Mobile proper -- but it ain't a bad effort, that's for sure. "Free Thinking & High Performance," indeed.[Via SCI FI Tech]

Sony Ericsson, like Apple, has a faithful collective of rumor hounds chasing after tidbits on its newest handsets; while we're frequently skeptical (why all the blurry pics?) we do love 'em and the insight they occasionally provide. We've heard various bits and bobs about the M610i and K850i -- codenamed Elena and Sophia, respectively -- and judging by the shots above, they both are starting to look a little more legit. Specs are still unclear, though the word is the K850i will be packing a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, xenon flash, a metal body, and judging by the pic above, a really crazy-looking key layout. The M610i will apparently replace the M600i as a business users' handset and add a 3.2 megapixel cam to the mix, a feature sorely missed in the M600i. No prices, availability, or concrete specs yet, but we'll do our darndest to keep the updates flowing as we get them.[Thanks, Michael and David]

  • Hulger's confessional booth lets sinners vent on luxury handsets

Hey, we know that purchasing one of Hulger's avant-garde handsets could very well leave you feeling guilty considering the lofty pricetag, but the company is looking to give you sinners a way out with its communication-enabled confessional booth. The bizarre setup will be erected at Designersblock Milan 2007, and is being constructed in partnership with "communications specialist Associate" to offer visitors the chance to "play the priest or the penitent." Of course, we've no interest in interviewing with a unordained minister, but so long as the unit features Hulger's latest ASTOR & SOPHIA limited edition handsets (pictured), we'd most definitely stop in for a courtesy chat.[Via Textually]

  • Could this be Sony Ericsson's "Sophia"?

Yay ... more über-blurry goodness from some cameraphone wielding person out in the world. While we always enjoy a peek into the future of mobile devices -- it pains us that said pics are always out of focus and taken in dark rooms; aren't spy-types supposed to be hooked up with cool James Bond-like gadgets? Sophia is touted as having a 5 MP camera, HSDPA, and maybe even WiFi. Of course all of this is pure speculation - we may learn more between now and CeBIT -- or not. We will leave it all up to your imagination at this point, though all signs seem to point to a very strong not likely. As per usual, if you have a believable better pic, please send it in.
