The malignant majesty of Demon's Souls becomes free to North American PlayStation Plus members in today's PSN update. The servers for the From Software game are staying online for the foreseeable future, so there's no reason to pass on a PS3 game we described as a "leather-clad mistress" in our 2009 review - unless, perhaps... you're scared?Less sadistic Plus entries coming this month include Zombie Tycoon 2, which heads to PS3 and Vita via PSN on April 30, Malicious and Labyrinth Legends for PS3, and PSP game Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for Vita. There are no PS Plus ETAs for those last three. As ever, new stuff coming in pushes old stuff back out. If you want to grab Spec Ops: The Line from PS Plus, today's your last chance to do so. Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition dragon punches out on April 9, while Anomaly: Warzone Earth flees on April 16.Finally, today's PSN update brings discounts to The Walking Dead, Rainbow Moon, and the Söldner-X series, including the first season of Telltale's zombified adventure for $14.99, a price that drops to $10.49 with Plus. For all those deals, check out the PlayStation Blog.

  • Soulcalibur 5's pre-order character Dampierre is ... interesting

The Soul Calibur series has a long and storied history for inserting extra-IP characters into its weapon-based brand of 3D fighting, but hidden beneath the glitz and glamour of big-name cameos lurks a world of truly bizarre weirdos. Take Lord Geo Dampierre, for example: We're still not entirely sure which major retailer will include the Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny alumni with pre-ordered copies of Soulcalibur 5, but we are entirely sure that his fighting style can be classified as both "goofy" and "incredible," thanks to the above trailer. It'll be interesting to see how this self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Assassin" will fair in combat against the world's actual greatest assassin; they both have wrist-mounted blades, seems pretty even to us!

  • Sony Korea: 'You are so Voldo'

In North America, the only way to get the Lilac PSP is in a bundle with Hannah Montana, an offer promoted by the infamous "OMG Lilac PSP" ad. In Korea, you still have to buy a bundle to get it, but the game included is ... Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny. The presence of a large portrait of Ivy on the top of the box suggests that the lilac PSP is intended to match Ivy's costume. Either that or Hannah Montana is confirmed as a playable character in Soul Calibur. It's interesting that Sony Computer Entertainment Korea doesn't seem to be operating under the notion that the Lilac system is just for "girlz." The Soul Calibur PSP Lilac Purple Pack will be out August 28 for 285,000 won ($231).

When the PSP first launched, did you suspect its games would ever look so good? A few years into the console's life, we're seeing a new generation of graphics on the system. Namco Bandai is really pushing the PSP envelope with Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny. The character models look convincing, many of them featuring the special "bounce" that gamers have come to expect. Destructible environments also return ... but in limited fashion. Watch the videos, and you too will be shocked!

  • Kratos seeking vengeance in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny

Namco Bandai must have an entire department dedicated to finding new ways and characters to market with its Soulcalibur brand. Following last year's ballet with the Force, the company has announced that God of War's Kratos will be taking out his frustration on the cast of Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for the PSP. What with all of his disemboweling and afternoons on the links, we honestly don't know how everyone's favorite Spartan with a chip on his shoulder fits bickering with Soulcalibur brawlers into his busy schedule. Nevertheless, the Ghost of Sparta will appear as a guest character in the miniaturized fighter. We just hope he's on his best behavior while in someone else's house when Broken Destiny ships later this summer. See the trailer after the break.%Gallery-64951%

  • Namco scales down Ivy's polygons, not her 'size' for Broken Destiny

Expect the upcoming PSP-exclusive Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny to have less polygons than its console counterpart, Soulcalibur IV; however, this doesn't mean a drop in the quality "visuals" the series has become known for. Namco recently showed off a comparison of the two Soulcaliburs, using Ivy and her voluptuous form to show off the seemingly lossless quality. It appears that Broken Destiny will use not more than half the polygon count of Soulcalibur IV. The graphical disparities appear to affect clothing textures and shadow/lightning effects most of all. Still, with the PSP's relatively small screen it won't be too noticeable. That, and you'd be looking elsewhere, we think.

Click Ivy to see more pictures. As you can see in these new screenshots, Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny isn't giving up the graphical detail found in the console games. No, Ivy is well-endowed with ... polygons. It reminds us that although PSP may be a handheld device, it can pump out truly spectacular graphics so long as developers do the breast they can.%Gallery-51401%

Whoa, what kind of demon magic did Namco Bandai use to pull off the graphics of Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny? We know developers are squeezing more and more power out of the aging PSP, but we can't help but be amazed at the fidelity of this handheld game. Could this best Soulcalibur Legends? Oh, we think so.%Gallery-51401%

Wait, Namco Bandai wasn't done announcing PSP games. Just an hour after their Tekken 6 announcement, the company also revealed a brand new Soulcalibur game for the handheld. Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny is a PSP-exclusive version of Soulcalibur IV. Gone are the Star Wars bonus characters, but in their stead will be at least one new character: Dampiere.Broken Destiny will feature all the dressings of a console fighter, with arcade, versus and survival modes. New to the PSP version will be a new single-player mode meant for beginners struggling to learn the intricacies of the battle system. It will function, essentially, as an enhanced tutorial mode. The PSP version will also feature new lighting effects that allow players to fight in stages at different times of day. Other gameplay components, such as the critical finish and armor destruction are also supposedly improved. Finally, Broken Destiny will offer Ad-Hoc wireless play, although according to Gamespot, Infrastructure might be a possibility. Expect Soulcalibur to hit your no-longer-defunct PSP this summer.
