At some point in the future, you'll be able to lay out your own randomly generated Spelunky adventures on your desk -- or just stare at some adorable round noses. Developer Derek Yu worked with his father to produce a line of "Spelunky Minis" toys, based on the characters in the upcoming XBLA remake of the PC platformer. The toys will be blind-boxed, and offered for sale "pretty soon." There's no word whether a full set will be offered for sale instead of having to randomly collect them, but ... there had better be. And if you're concerned about the effect this has had on the currently unknown release date of the game, Yu said " don't worry, we're still working hard on the game - all day, every day! But this was a nice side project."

Roguelike fans need not spend their time in dank, dark dungeons all by their lonesome. During a panel here at GDC 2011, Andy Hull confirmed a multiplayer component is in the works for the Xbox Live Arcade game, Spelunky. "We'll have more information about the multiplayer modes closer to release," he said, revealing a lone screenshot to attendees showing four different spelunkers on the screen at once. Sadly, the shot was up only briefly, so we were unable to snap a photo. We've contacted Andy Hull and the game's creator, Derek Yu, and will update accordingly when we hear back. Update: We've got a thrilling four-player co-op screen for you just past the break. %Gallery-104645%

The XBLA version of Derek Yu's subterranean, sidescrolling roguelike Spelunky is looking pretty nice in these new screenshots. Not only is the resolution (and thus, the detail) higher than the PC original, but there are new lighting effects, explosions, and adorable red noses to look at. "I really want Spelunky to be as fun to look at as it it to play," Yu said, "and to that end, we've added lots of little details to the backgrounds to try and make each part of the game feel even more distinct. Spelunky was originally announced with a 2010 release date. "The game is coming along splendidly," Yu told Joystiq when we checked in, "but it's possible we may slip into 2011. We really want to make sure the game is awesome."%Gallery-104645%

PC indie title Spelunky is ready to explore the dark, cavernous recesses of your console when it makes its way to Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. Developer Derek Yu says he'll be "stuffing [the XBLA version] with new graphics, audio and other features for XBLA users." He's not sure if he'll update the original PC version of Spelunky, as he believes it "doesn't need replacing," but he'll continue supporting it as a free title. If you're curious about Spelunky, you can always download the original for PC from the game's website. If playing video games isn't "your thing" and you're still curious, check out the many, many YouTube videos on the game. Also, why ... are you reading this website?
