Squids Odyssey has slingshotted past its 2013 fall release date on the 3DS and Wii U eShop and is readjusting itself to target this spring. Odyssey is a turn-based, tactical RPG that lets players fight battles by flinging ocean life into their foes. Antagonists have been mutated by an ooze-like pollutant, but they don't seem keen on using their powers for good like our half-shelled friends. Odyssey is a compilation of existing entries Squids and Squids Wild West, but it adds a new campaign, a new Squid hero and reworked controls for the Wii U and 3DS. Players can assemble teams from 15 Squids across four classes to take on Odyssey's 90+ missions. There are also more than 65 stat-boosting helmets to strap onto Squids, in case you were worried about safety gear for your arsenal of sea-creature bullets. [Image: The Game Bakers]

The oceanic, turn-based RPG series Squids is riding a current to the 3DS and Wii U eShop this fall in Squids Odyssey. The port is a remake of the two existing Squids games, Squids and Squids Wild West. The series follows the species' efforts to save the ocean from a black ooze pollutant that turns sea life into Venom violent mutants. Players slingshot members from a squad of Squids at their opponents, dealing damage by crashing into them. It's comparable to a game of pool, only pool doesn't involve propelling creatures into each other in a fight to their death. Squids can belong to the shooter, scout, trooper or healer classes, but a fifth type will debut in Squids Odyssey. Fresh levels and items are also planned, as are "completely revamped" controls to take advantage of each platform's strengths, according to the announcement.

Squids was an excellent little strategy title that arrived last year on iOS, and since then, devs The Game Bakers have been working hard to update it, both with better-looking graphics and lots of different gameplay upgrades. Squids: Wild West arrived on the App Store just today, and it's a standalone expansion to the first game of sorts, with lots of new content, new mechanics, and new features to play with. The basic gameplay of Squids is essentially turn-based strategy. But it's been designed to be as accessible as possible, so instead of scary grids or lots of numbers, the combat is all physics-based: Just swipe back and let go to fire your little Squids around the battlefield. That mix of hardcore tactical combat with a very accessible interface makes things a whole lot of fun. And as the game goes along, you get more and more characters with more and more abilities added in, so that even a few stages in, you have plenty of options and various tactics to take the bad guys down. Squids: Wild West is also bursting with polish and charm. The Game Bakers have really gotten a great hold on what works and what doesn't on the iOS platform, and since they've basically made this game once before already, you can tell they're really on top of things here. Squids: Wild West is just 99 cents, and Squids is still just $1.99. One or both will make for a really great gaming experience.

The Game Bakers' mobile, PC and Mac RPG title Squids is getting a rough 'n rowdy update this summer with a new chapter: the Wild West.To prepare players for the Wild West, Game Bakers launched a free update on the App Store today, featuring three western-ized levels in Seawood, a new Squid hero named Cleef and a new enemy, the Buffalo Shrimp. The update also brings a higher level cap, a new Game Center achievement and improved social media functionality. We hope it also demonstrates how tumbleweeds blow across a dry dirt street in a fully underwater environment.

Squids is an interesting way of bringing tactical strategy to a very casual kind of game. The game has a nice RPG layer, with turn-based combat and classes of units that you can train and level up while playing. But the "combat" itself is super casual. During fights you essentially pull back and fling your squids around. In a way it feels like the game combines casual gameplay with more tactical thinking. Unfortunately, in practice the game never really succeeds at either. Merely seeing how the two styles mix is fun. The game's only 99 cents for the launch sale right now, with full Game Center integration and plenty of content to explore. I'd say look at Squids if you're more looking for something more casual, but if you are really into tactical RPGs, it's likely you'll need a little more than this. On the other hand, if you've heard good things about games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Shining Force but tend to play more casual titles, Squids might be a great entry point. Final Fantasy Tactics is on iOS as well, but it ratchets up the complexity quite a few notches from Squids, even if the gameplay is similar.

Squids, a colorful RPG in which you get to fling cephalopods, will arrive on the iOS App Store on October 13. Developed by The Game Bakers, a pair of Ubisoft veterans, Squids already appeared polished when we got some time to check it out at Gamescom. In Squids, you recruit a team of the titular creatures to discover and stop the source of an ooze spreading throughout the sea, with each member of the team holding a different power. The turn-based combat occurs on vibrant, richly detailed maps, with players stretching the squids back and flinging them into creatures infected by ooze, like in a game of pool or bocce. And yes, there are giant enemy crabs. The game was previously announced for PC and Mac as well, but there's no update on those launch dates. Check out several Squids character trailers after the break. %Gallery-135005%

The Game Bakers is a new French studio created by two folks from the Ubisoft talent pool. Emeric Thoa, former Worldwide Director of Conception for Ubisoft, who had roles in designing Rayman Raving Rabbids, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Splinter Cell Double Agent, will handle the creative impetus. Audrey Leprince, a seasoned producer who most recently worked on Tom Clancy's EndWar, will deal with operations. Thoa is looking to develop games that feel something like "PopCap meets Nintendo." The studio's first game, Squids, is an adventure game where players recruit a "team of misfit squid to banish the Black Ooze from the seas." The game is expected for mobile, PC and Mac this fall, with a beta planned for this summer.
