It's rare for an MMO to bring with it a history as rich and generational as Star Trek. The Trek universe is as deep and rich with lore as Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, and just like both those titles the lore has been passed down from parent to child over generations now. This leaves any game which attempts to encapsulate that lore in a precarious situation of both having to remain close to the canon, yet leaving enough creative room for the player to feel like they're making a true difference in the universe. And while we have yet to see if Star Trek Online lives up to the second part of that criteria, we can take a look at how they are moving the lore forward and dealing with the canocial events of past Trek incarnations. The main conduit for this lesson in lore has been through the sporadic postings of The Path to 2409 on the official STO website. However, there's a lot of information there and it's quite easy to get lost in it all. So, let's take a look at the Star Trek Online timeline Cryptic has released thus far. To begin with, we'll go over the years 2379 through 2384.

I'm what you might call a 'casual Trekkie', I enjoy the TV series and loved the latest movie so I was quite curious when this timeline was revealed last week. Star Trek Online takes place well past the events of the film and Voyager so I bet I'm not the only one who is eager to find out what happens next. Well as part of the run up to the game's release, the STO devs have been posting pieces (called The Path to 2409) looking at the game's future history as well as fictionalised interviews with important characters within the game and the franchise itself.Their latest post is an interview between roving reporter Jake Sisko and Ambassador Worf and adds more pieces to the 'prime' universe and the game's backstory which I find completely fascinating. Indeed all the posts, from interviews to straight-up historical ramblings, are a must-read for Trekkies anticipating the release of Star Trek Online.

Do you like your Star Trek movies riddled with Beastie Boys songs and Nokia product placements? Yeah, neither do we. Still, if you've been to see the reboot of the franchise, then you probably noticed the outrageous spot for the Finnish phone-maker. Said ad comes in the form of a futuristic "Nokia ring" coupled with a large, touchscreen device placed in the dash of the totally tubular Corvette a young James T. Kirk is about to smash up but good. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and check it out in the soon-to-be-pulled-by-the-studio clip after the break.
