Like a certain Mandalorian bounty hunter crawling out from the belly of a sarlacc, images from the canceled Star Wars 1313 game have defied death and are once more flying about, ready to be admired. Brazilian artist Bruno Werneck's work on the game has been spotted over at Filmpaint Studio, and if you were heartbroken about the game's cancellation before, just take a look at what could have been. Gaze ye upon Hoth, Tatooine, Coruscant ... and despair. Or be happy to have something to remember 1313 by. Whichever way you want to spin it. [Image: Bruno Werneck]

  • Disney abandons 'Star Wars 1313' trademark

Family-friendly megacorporation Disney has allowed its trademark on Star Wars 1313 to lapse, likely driving the final nail into the coffin of the promising action game once described by developers as "Star Wars hell." Initially revealed just prior to E3 2012, Star Wars 1313 was to be a darker take on George Lucas' beloved space epic. Instead of cutesy ewoks and characters who clearly fit into either "good" or "evil" roles, Star Wars 1313 would have cast players as a bounty hunter stalking the crime-ridden alleyways of Coruscant. Little was revealed of the game before its development was suspended following Disney's purchase of LucasArts, but Star Wars 1313 was repeatedly described as "dark and mature" by its developers at LucasArts. Now, a visit to the United States Patent And Trademark Office website reveals that Disney's trademark has lapsed. "Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued," reads the trademark status section, indicating that Disney made no effort to maintain its ownership of the title. While it is possible that some of the concepts seen in those early glimpses might make their way into future Star Wars games, it seems unlikely that we'll ever see Star Wars 1313 on store shelves.

  • Star Wars 1313 'halted,' says LucasFilm

A LucasFilm representative confirmed that production on Star Wars 1313 and what's rumored to be Star Wars: First Assault has ceased following yesterday's closure of LucasArts by Disney. Speaking to the BBC, LucasFilm spokesperson Miles Perkins said, "Both current Star Wars games projects have been halted."A LucasArts representative previously indicated to Game Informer that Star Wars 1313 could be released via external licensing. However, a Kotaku source told that site the chances of that happening are "effectively zero.""It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans," the LucasArts rep told Game Informer. "We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we're just looking at different models rather than internal production... They're evaluating everything. There's always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing."The last we'd seen of Star Wars 1313 was an "inaccurate" PlayStation Germany posting, which said the game would be available on PS3 this year. Leaked materials indicated Star Wars: First Assault as a multiplayer shooter coming to XBLA, although LucasArts had yet to officially confirm the game or any details surrounding it.

  • Star Wars 1313 coming to PS3 in 2013, says PlayStation Germany [Update: Nope!]

A PlayStation Germany post on Facebook says Star Wars 1313 is coming to PS3. The post, which links to a gallery of previously released images, reads "Star Wars 1313 erscheint 2013 für PlayStation 3," and you don't need a degree in German to know that says the third-person action game is headed for Sony's home console sometime this year.Developer/publisher LucasArts has kept coy about the platforms, and that, along with the fidelity of what was demonstrated at last year's E3, led to speculation that 1313 would be for next-gen hardware. Of course, confirmation of it coming to PS3 doesn't exclude it from also being released on the console's successor, or any other systems for that matter.Update: LucasArts has confirmed to Polygon that the information presented on PlayStation Germany's Facebook page was inaccurate, and that it has no further announcements to make at this time. Well then.

In this latest developer diary, the titular level 1313 in Star Wars 1313 is described as a "Star Wars Hell," an "oppressive" place and "not somewhere that you want to be caught in an alley on a Friday night." Saturday night? We guess that's totally fine!

Star Wars 1313 may be our first look into the next generation of games – at least the next generation according to Microsoft and Sony. LucasArts' internally-developed third-person shooter slash Uncharted-esque third-person action game is the very definition of "early" for a game in development. "We're in pre-production," said Craig Derrick, LucasArts producer, ahead of a PC-based demo.Further pushing that point: the team isn't talking platforms just yet, nor engine, indicating to many that it could be headed to Microsoft and Sony's yet-to-be announced console successors. The demo runs on an Nvidia 680 graphics card, which I'm told is the fabled "Kepler" architecture of the next generation. And the game is gorgeous for it. Both in cutscenes and in gameplay, the graphical detail is near-equal to that of Naughty Dog's latest efforts. Again, the game is in pre-production.Credit's due here to LucasArts' Industrial Light & Magic, as well as Skywalker Sound and LucasFilm Animation, who are assisting on the project – no doubt – but few games look anywhere near this good at this point in production.

Don't hold your breath for these Star Wars 1313 videos and gallery. Not that you won't see them soon -- they are the point of this post, after all -- but that's the advice our supposed bounty-hunter-in-training gets as he descends 1,000 feet into Coruscant, and we think it's pretty wise. All we're saying is this: Keep breathing and watch these three Star Wars 1313 videos (one of which you may have seen already), and then peruse the screenshot gallery below. In and out. Star Wars 1313 has finally been revealed. Lucasarts debuted the upcoming Bounty Hunter-focused game on GameTrailers earlier this evening. There's not much on show, but what we see looks impressive. And by impressive we mean: something, something, something Jar Jar Binks sucks.

After being leaked earlier this evening, Star Wars 1313 has been officially revealed by Lucasarts. A teaser image for the game reveals what looks like an original trilogy-era shuttle, which may mean the game could take place – at least in part – during the era of everyone's favorite series characters. A press release for Star Wars 1313 says the game is a third-person cinematic action game, set in "Level 1313, a ruthless criminal underground deep below the surface of the planet of Coruscant," and the player will control "a deadly bounty hunter as he uses an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down his marks and uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy." LucasArts says the game will emphasize Star Wars' "dark and mature" elements, and show off "a part of the Star Wars mythos that we've always known existed, but never had a chance to visit." In other words, it sounds a lot like the Force Unleashed games, but from the perspective of a bounty hunter instead of a Jedi. We'll hear more at E3 next week, no doubt.

A landing page on GameTrailers TV [since replaced] for the site's upcoming E3 coverage has leaked at least two big titles ahead of the show itself. According to the page (which has been replaced, screenshot above), "E3 begins on GTTV with the Star Wars 1313 announcement and new trailers from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Tomb Raider, Guardians of Middle-Earth, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and Dishonored."Most of those we already knew would be getting some coverage at the show next week, but two of those titles are new to our ears: Star Wars 1313, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.Star Wars 1313 is a trademark that's been bouncing around at LucasFilm for a while, but there's been no official word on just what it might be yet. In the Expanded Universe, Boba Fett once used the alias "CT-1313," so the best guess is that it's a new franchise based around Fett's story in some way. StarWars1313.com has also been registered by LucasArts, and currently redirects to the main Star Wars site. And Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is clearly a sequel to the 2010 title that's hardly a big surprise to finally hear about. But it's not any less exciting to see these two big names revealed by GTTV's mistake. We'll obviously find out more about both of these when the official announcements are made.Update: Star Wars 1313 now has a Facebook page, also apparently leaked before an "announcement." There's a shot and a description on there, both of which we've reprinted after the break. 1313 refers to "Level 1313," a criminal underground on Coruscant (if indeed this page is real), but there is mention of a certain "bounty hunter," so Boba's not out yet.Update: LucasArts' official site has the shot, logo, and a link to the Facebook page. It's official, this is the new Star Wars game.[Thanks, Jonas]

  • Lucasfilm applies for 'Star Wars 1313' trademark

A strange new trademark application by Lucasfilm portends a new multimedia Star Wars franchise, including video games. The company filed for the name "Star Wars 1313" for use with video games, as well as toys, trading cards, sticker books, pencil sharpeners, online social networking services, and anything else that can possibly bear the Star Wars logo. The document contains no indication of what "Star Wars 1313" means; we knew the series was set "a long time ago," but don't know if that translates to 700 years in Earth time. However, a quick Wookieepedia search reveals "CT-1313" as a name used by Boba Fett in a Star Wars novel. So it could be a Boba Fett-focused thing. Dengar's still waiting for his big break.
