When you first launch Disney+ after it becomes available next early week, you might find something that wasn't supposed to be there. According to The Verge, the streaming service will show some subscribers an ad promoting premium TV channel Starz after they finish the initial sign-up process. Disney confirmed to Engadget that the one-time promo will be shown to some users once they finish signing up for the service and entering payment details.

Just seven weeks after rolling out iOS 12.2, Apple has released iOS 12.3. The biggest update this time around is a major refresh of the TV app ahead of the Apple TV+ streaming service debuting later this year. Through the new-look app, you can subscribe to various TV networks through Apple TV Channels and watch their shows all in one place.

Starz apologizes for pushing Twitter to remove tweets on online piracy

How about this for a comedy of errors. Last week, Twitter removed a tweet posted by TorrentFreak, for an article about how Starz shows were being pirated. The TV service Starz compounded matters over the weekend after issuing a DMCA takedown to remove other users' tweets that shared the article or even simply referenced the irony of the removal of the first tweet.

Apple video service may charge $10 each for HBO, Showtime and Starz

Apple's video service event is just hours away, but there are still a few rumors making the rounds -- including, apparently, pricing. Wall Street Journal contacts claim Apple has been negotiating to offer subscriptions to channels "such as" HBO, Showtime and Starz for $10 each through its new TV app, which would also include Apple's original programming. In that light, it would be closer to Amazon's Prime Video Channels, where the focus is on convenient access to third party services.

After racking up viewers with free movies and TV shows, Roku is expanding its popular Roku Channel to include premium content providers. The update, which was announced earlier this month, adds support for more than 25 subscription services including Starz, Showtime and Epix. Roku is starting the roll out of the update today, bringing it first to Roku players. It will reach all supported devices over the next few weeks, with Roku TVs planned to be the last to receive the update.

The Roku Channel has become a hit by offering free movies and TV shows. Now, Roku is taking the next logical step by adding premium subscriptions for 25 providers, including Showtime, EPIX and Starz. Starting late in January, Roku users will be able subscribe to those networks with a few clicks of their remote, afterwards their content will appear at the top of the Roku Channel.

Starz is turning its attention to "underserved audiences" in the world of streaming video, adding a raft of children's shows and Spanish-language programs to its $9-a-month library and on-demand platforms. Bob the Builder and Thomas and Friends are among the fresh kid-focused titles, while adults can enjoy nearly 300 new Spanish-language movies and TV show episodes, including Colombian telenovelas La Promesa and El Cartel de los Sapos.

Starz app streams 'American Gods' to your Samsung Smart TV

If you've wanted to watch the likes of American Gods or Outlander with little more than an internet connection and your TV, you no longer need one of Sony's sets to make it happen. Starz has launched its streaming app on Samsung Smart TVs, bringing its $9 per month streaming service to a decidedly wider audience. You'll need a fairly recent TV ("select" 2014 or newer models with the Smart Hub), but that's about the only real requirement. Our main complaint is simply that this is arriving a bit late -- between Android TV, Apple TV, Roku and Xbox One, determined viewers already have plenty of choices.

Apple hopes to sell premium TV channels in a bundle

Apple's attempts to offer its own TV service haven't panned out. However, it appears to have a Plan B: offer a bundle that includes just a handful of channels you can already watch on its devices. Recode sources understand that Apple is pitching a deal that would offer HBO, Showtime and Starz for one price. It's not certain whether or not you'd get a discount over the $35 per month it costs to subscribe to each network individually, but the focus would be on convenience. There's even talk of Apple potentially selling the bundle as a stand-alone product -- presumably, as more than just a collection of existing apps.

Starz will let you pay for streaming TV with prepaid cards

Conventional TV networks, as a rule, are very fond of subscriptions. Don't tell that to Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, though. He told guests at the Code Media conference that the premium channel will soon offer prepaid cards for its streaming service. It's a matter of accessibility, he argues: there are people who want to watch premium TV shows but can't justify the cost of a cable subscription (or buying show downloads, for that matter) and don't have a credit card.

Starz pulls Spotify music streaming into its apps

The pairing of Spotify and Starz in a single app seems odd, but it's happening anyway. Subscribers to the premium channel who use its mobile app (via a direct subscription or participating cable provider -- sorry Comcast customers) will notice links to the music service with its most recent update. It will provide a quick link to soundtracks and music from Starz-licensed movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (since that came out just before Netflix took over the deal from Disney) as well as its exclusive shows like Power and Outlander.

Last month Vimeo, STARZ and Lionsgate Entertainment -- makers of such fine prestige TV as Orange is the New Black and Mad Men -- announced a new partnership to put all that programming online with an on-demand pricing scheme. While many of the shows are already available via iTunes, Amazon or Netflix in the US, Vimeo is making a play for international audiences by offering the service in 150 countries around the world.

Starz has made its cord cutter-friendly streaming service available on just about every major device imaginable, but what if you have a Roku player? Don't worry, you're covered. Roku devices in the US now have a Starz channel that offers all the access you'd expect to the service's mix of original programming (such as Outlander or Power) and movies like Inside Out. As usual, what you pay depends on how attached you are to traditional TV -- it's "free" if you already subscribe to to a participating TV provider, or $9 per month if you prefer to watch online.

Lionsgate and Starz join forces to compete with HBO, Netflix

In an effort to compete with the likes of HBO and Netflix, Lionsgate Entertainment and Starz are joining forces. The former is picking up the latter for $4.4 billion in cash and stock, according to The LA Times. The deal seems mutually beneficial. With it, Starz gets some industry cachet (and a bunch of cash) that could help it attract projects that'd otherwise go toward HBO and Netflix. If that means more like the fantastic Ash vs Evil Dead, hey, alright.

ESPN isn't the only big broadcaster showing some affection for Android TV today. Starz has launched its streaming service on Google's big-screen platform, giving you access to Ash vs. Evil Dead, Outlander and other shows through Android-powered TVs and set-top boxes. The features will resemble what you've found on iOS and smaller Android devices, including both the $9 per month internet-only plan and authentication if you already get Starz through a supporting TV provider (sorry, Comcast customers). Just don't expect it to work on every gadget running the platform -- the company only promises support for "select" Android TV devices, such as Sony's Android sets and Google's Nexus Player.
