First 'State of Decay 2' content update adds stealthy crossbows
If you thought State of Decay 2 was getting a bit stale even with a little DLC, relief is at hand. Undead Labs has released its expected free Zedhunter update, and it promises some significant changes to the gameplay in addition to extra missions -- and one might seem familiar. Most notably, it now includes crossbows. You can pull off your best Daryl-from-The-Walking-Dead impression and pick off zombies without drawing attention, wasting ammo (it's recoverable) or putting up with the occasional jam. You'll find three swords and three knives in case that crossbow isn't enough.
After Math: Huge hamster balls
While the Overwatch community debated this week as to whether or not Top Gear's Richard Hammond could actually fit inside the Hammond the Hamster's mech (hint: yes he can, with room to spare), there was no shortage of news throughout the rest of the gaming industry. Alexa got its own board game, ToeJam and Earl are slated to return to consoles this fall, and Fortnite -- for one gloriously brief moment -- opened a tutorial sandbox for its neophyte players.
'State of Decay 2' celebrates July 4th with themed DLC and fireworks
Open-world survival RPG State of Decay 2 has officially surpassed 3 million players, and to celebrate (and keep them coming back), developer Undead Labs is serving up a special July 4th-themed DLC update.
First 'State of Decay 2' patch is as large as the game itself
If you have State of Decay 2 but haven't fired it up in a while, you'll have to be... patient. Undead Labs has released its first patch for the zombie-slaying title, and it's a whopping 20GB -- that's about as large as the install on the Xbox One. And despite the size, you're not getting more content. The 1.2 update fixes a raft of bugs, including gameplay quirks, multiplayer, the heads-up display and the environment. Think of this as a gigantic, later-than-usual day-one patch ironing out the quirks of the launch version.
'State of Decay 2' brings a zombie horde to Xbox on May 22nd
Just when you thought you were safe, it's time to fight for survival again. State of Decay 2 is coming on May 22nd, and it's bringing a zombie invasion the likes of which players have never seen before. As we revealed in our preview last year, the sequel takes "kill or be killed" to a whole new level, as you'll be heading up a team of survivors and ultimately deciding who lives or dies. The game launches on Xbox One and PC, with two access tiers that suggest the State of Decay franchise is paving the way for the subscription gaming service that Xbox chief Phil Spencer has nodded towards before.
Xbox's lack of compelling games won't be fixed next year
Microsoft's 2017 started six months early. At E3 2016, Xbox chief Phil Spencer closed out the company's keynote by teasing the "most powerful console ever." At this year's show, he finally revealed the Xbox One X, and in November, the hardware was at retail. In the time it takes to earn a bachelor's degree, Microsoft addressed one of the internet's loudest complaints about the Xbox One: that it wasn't powerful enough compared to the PlayStation 4.
'State of Decay 2' forces you to pick who becomes zombie food
State of Decay 2 wants you to decide who lives or dies -- and deal with whatever happens next. The sequel aims to double down on what made the 2013 original work: a more sophisticated game world, and both more elaborate skill trees and settlements, whether that's medical facilities or just better zombie-deflecting defenses. The invasion may be delayed, but you'll be in charge of your own survival when it finally hits in 2018. I got to see the game in action here at Gamescom, and if you've ever wanted an alternative to The Walking Dead where anyone and (nearly) everyone could die, this is for you.
