  • iPad roundup: Letterman licking, Colbert chopping, MobileMe and Remote support

Let's get straight to the meat. The iPad was doing the talk show rounds last night, with heavy hitters David Letterman and Stephen Colbert one-upping each other on who can do the sillier thing with it. Letterman went with the old school "if you don't know what to do with it, lick it" routine, while his competitor brought out a more sophisticated salsa preparation act. Pick your favorite from the videos after the break. In more material news, Apple has announced that MobileMe now includes the iPad among its supported devices, while some eager souls over at MacStories have spotted that iTunes 9.1 now references an "iPad remote," which suggests the nearly 10-inch tablet will soon be able to function as one of the most luxurious channel changers around. And you thought you wouldn't find a use for it.

It must be nice to be the host of your own popular Comedy Central show and a host on the Grammy Awards. Why? You get to play with an iPad. No, it's not one of Tim Meehan's faux iPads - this was a working unit that flipped from portrait to landscape mode when Stephen Colbert pulled it out of his jacket... or pants. Enjoy this short piece of video from tonight's Grammy Award ceremonies.

Cross another one off the "waiting for them to go HD" list, as Comedy Central is upgrading The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report to 1080i. What caused the wait until 2010? Apparently that's how long it took to upgrade the control room for these shows that are continuously in production, but at least we'll get to see how many CNBC thumbnails Stewart can squeeze into a 16x9 frame before the Mayan calendar runs out.

Taking aim at Microsoft's recently unveiled Project Natal, Stephen Colbert unveiled a new-new console on The Colbert Report the other night. The XXbox (or Ex-Xbox, one of our readers cleverly pointed out) bests Natal's lack of controller by at least one point, lacking a console and games. For about 500 bucks, it sounds like a steal. But you know, we'll buy any new gadget. Video is after the break. [Via Joystiq]

Wow, Microsoft has been on a roll lately. First the company unveiled Project Natal at E3. Then came the dreams of fantastic controller-less games, giggling like idiots at a weird, digital boy and squealing like children as we pretended to drive a car. And now, guess what kids? Project Natal is yesterday's news, as Stephen Colbert somehow managed to get the green light from Microsoft to unveil its next Xbox console, the ExXbox.Honestly, we're at a loss for words. Forget Project Natal. Put away MotionPlus. Shelve the PlayStation Motion Controller. The level of innovation here is simply through the roof. Rather than attempt to describe how incredible it is, allow us to direct you past the break, where you can see the future unfold before your eyes (look for it at 1:40 in the video).[Thanks, Jay!]

With no real change to Rock Band Weekly since the Iron Maiden announcement a couple weeks ago, we gave the long-running feature a break last week during the E3 madness. However, the newbie, Rock Band Wiikly, still has to work it this week. Not only did it receive the aforementioned Iron Maiden content, but an additional 13 tracks previously released on the other consoles. Don't forget to download "Charlene" from Stephen and the Colberts for free. Check out the full list after the break.

  • Still time to get your pet bear and achievement

There's still time to get your non-combat baby polar bear pet and your achievement celebrating the 4th anniversary of the World of Warcraft. All you have to do is log into the game and open up your mail. Many folks thought that the achievement would only trigger if you logged on yesterday, however that doesn't appear to be the case. People are calling the polar bear pet the "cutest thing in-game." The reaction of "Awwww!!!" can be heard throughout guild chats everywhere. And for those special/cool/nerdy enough, you can even have a polar bear non-combat pet next to a polar bear hunter pet next to a BlizzCon polar bear mount next to a regular polar bear mount. If you get to have that much polar bear love in one screenshot, you get the achievement "Threat Down: Polar Bears" and are awarded the title "Colbert." The t is silent, of course.Okay... maybe we're kidding about the title, but it's still cool to be able to do that.

We all know the man's stance on bears. He doesn't like them. In fact, he downright despises them. That's why we're sure that Nintendo's latest, Disaster: Day of Crisis, is among Colbert's most treasured games. Why? Well, it features a boss battle against a bear. Aside from teaching us the near indestructible nature of the beast, it also shows us what kind of weapons to use against a bear should it get you in its sights. Also, it teaches us that bears like to stupidly charge back and forth.Check out the video past the break.%Gallery-30942%

  • Richard Garriott's appearance on The Colbert Report

    09.19.2008

As announced earlier in the week, Richard Garriott made his Comedy Central debut last night with Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report. This appearance by Garriott was in conjunction with his Operation Immortality project that will take place next month. Stephen Colbert will be joining many other popular celebrities by adding his digitized DNA to the Immortality Drive which will accompany Garriott on his space flight, and remain on the International Space Station in the event of Earth's destruction.Admittedly, the Garriott appearance is very brief. In fact, he didn't actually "appear" on the show at all, but called in from his space flight training grounds in Russia. This was a bit on the disappointing side, yet we understand Garriott's time restraints with that whole space flight thing and all. Plus, it turns out this interview was done literally ten minutes before Garriott was to be quarantined for the flight. Sadly enough, there was no mention of Tabula Rasa during the interview at all. Regardless, it's a funny little interview.

If the recent news of Stephen Colbert joining Operation Immortality has you scratching your head, you may be pleased to learn that Tabula Rasa's Richard Garriott will appear on Colbert's show, The Colbert Report, to discuss his flight to the International Space Station, Operation Immortality and Colbert's participation with the project. This particular episode will air on Comedy Central tomorrow, September 17th, immediately following the Jon Stewart Show at 11:30pm EDT/10:30pm CDT. With Colbert's dry humor and satirical wit, we're sure there will be more than a few jokes made at Garriott's expense.

Sure, Stephen Colbert's political humor is great, but we prefer his early work: The sensitive, touching and frequently unnerving pop he crafted as part of Stephen and the Colberts. The apex of their work, the semi-hit single "Charlene," is now available as a free download on Rock Band.Right now, this standard of American synth-stalk-pop is only available as a free download on Xbox Live, but we wouldn't be surprised if it was also part of today's PSN update. In the meantime, see Colbert's softer side just after the jump.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

Professional athletes, writers, musicians and entrepreneurs have nothing on Operation Immortality's latest DNA recipient: Stephen Colbert. The star of the hit Comedy Central show The Colbert Report will have his DNA digitized and sent to the International Space Station with Richard Garriott for the wildly-popular Tabula Rasa promotion Operation Immortality."I am thrilled to have my DNA shot into space, as this brings me one step closer to my life-long dream of being the baby at the end of 2001," said Colbert. Garriott comments on the decision to add Colbert to the growing list of popular celebrities joining the project, "Is there a better person for us to turn to for this high-level responsibility?"

Of course, it all seems so obvious now! How did we not interpret El Jobso's true meaning of the iPhone kill-switch -- it actually kills you. We have noted iPhone expert Stephen Colbert to thank not just for this brilliant deduction, but also for sticking up for the lot of us and giving the iPhone 3G a cold staredown -- but not before declaring, "I knew I should have gotten a Zune! They can't kill me... or do anything else." Zing! Clip after the break (iPhone at 5:45).[Thanks, Matt]

  • Champions Online writer nominated for award

We knew this guy was awesome, so it's nice to see him in the running for an award. What award is John Layman -- writer for Cryptic Studio's upcoming Champions Online -- being nominated for, you ask? None other than the Harvey award for his work on Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen No. 1 -- that's right, he's the series' co-author. The comic issue in question is being nominated for best single issue or story. It's also worth noting that the second issue is coming out on July 2nd, so if you weren't sure about getting it before you've got yourself a new excuse. This is a really great sign for anyone looking forward to Champions Online, since a lot of how interesting the game characters and Champions world will be relies on Layman's ability to write well. We really can't wait to see his take on Foxbat, which should prove to be especially awesome. We're looking forward to the mission where we get to stop Foxbat from flooding the city with Jell-O or forcing everyone to do the macarena repeatedly for hours on end -- or maybe he'll try to carry off the Empire State Building again.

You'd think that after begging for, and apparently receiving, a free iPhone last year, Stephen Colbert would have figured out how to hold the damn thing by now. Katie Cotton's not going to toss you an iPhone 3G freebie acting like this. Oh wait, fake television news isn't real? The "t" is silent? Oh never mind.[Thanks, Jason]

On April 1st, Philip Rosedale appeared before the Congressional Subcommittee to discuss virtual worlds. Among those testifying was Susan Tenby, whose in-world name is Glitteractica Cookie. Once the Daily Show found out, it was open season for Second Life. After John Stewart mocked poor Glitteractica, Robert Bloomfield, aka Beyers Sellers, had her on his show, Metanomics, on the SL Cable Network. While there, he issued a challenge to the man whom he felt was John's little brother, Stephen Colbert. You'll just have to watch to see the amusing incentives that he offers![Thanks, Beyers!]If you have machinima or movie suggestions from any MMO, please send them to machinima AT massively DOT com, along with any information you might have about them.

  • Colbert none too pleased about loss to Miyamoto

Everyone knows that Time's online Person Of The Year poll (which was topped by Shigeru Miyamoto, Korean pop sensation Rain and Stephen Colbert, respectively) was kind of joke. ... Well, everyone, that is, except Colbert himself, who took his loss to Shiggy none too well as you can see in the first video after the break. But even as he scoffed at Miyamoto's contribution to the world, Colbert used a video game to settle his long-standing beef with Rain. The brave among you can watch the fateful Dance Dance Revolution competition we've also safely embedded after the break.

When Stephen Colbert came third in the Time 100 poll, we pretty much knew that he wasn't going to be happy. Of course, as is his style, he takes quite a bit of time to lash out against Korean pop star Rain, his new arch-nemesis. But, Colbert also takes a jab at gaming icon (and winner of said poll) Shigeru Miyamoto, who you helped skyrocket to the top of the rankings.Check past the break where we've embedded the video of Colbert attacking the gaming legend.

Oh bum bot. We remember when you were fresh out of the hands of creator Rufus Terrill. Now look at you -- featured on the Colbert Report. Take a look at the video after the break to see a defender of America (and bot) on the front lines of battle.[Thanks, Tony S.]

  • The life and death of Stefen Colbear

    by

    03.12.2008

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/The_life_and_death_of_Stefen_Colbear'; He's a man of myth, legend, and internet memes -- a Paladin crusader for Truthiness, justice, and the Alliance way. His name is Stefen Colbear, and he's putting the Horde on notice. That's how it would have been anyway, but sadly, this hero never came to be. Upper Deck hired artist Todd Lockwood to produce the above image for a special WoW TCG card inspired by The Colbert Report's Stephen Colbert -- a known video-gaming and role-playing enthusiast. Lockwood's finished product depicts a microphone-sword wielding Human Paladin named Stefen Colbear, who exudes the very essence of Truthiness.Unfortunately, Colbert's agent nipped the idea in the bud. According to Lockwood, he didn't even show the artwork to his client. Blizzard and Upper Deck presumably had hoped Colbert would feature the card on his show, giving them mega-publicity. An unknown individual leaked the image onto the net a few weeks ago, and WoW and Colbert fans excitedly spread it around in both card and wallpaper forms. Even though Colbear never saw the light of day, his legend nevertheless strikes fear in the hearts of those who would threaten the Colbear Nation. So watch out Kael'Thas, watch out Archimonde! But most of all: watch out, bears.
