Apple's online store is currently down. When the Apple Store goes down around this time of week, it's usually a sign of something new showing up in the store or some kind of promotional/holiday refresh taking place rather than simple maintenance updates. We haven't heard of any new products coming down the pipeline -- Apple probably has its hands full with the new iPad rollout at the moment -- but we'll let you know what (if anything) shows up when the store comes back up. We have heard that Apple may simply be doing some work on the backend to update its images for the iPad's higher-resolution Retina Display, so that might be all this is. Don't get your hopes up is all we're saying. Update: The store is back up, but as far as we can tell nothing's different. Let us know in the comments if you see something we missed.

The show must go on... and Apple's famous sticky note has appeared on cue. The online Apple Store is down in preparation for preorders for the iPhone 4S, which will commence at 12:01 A.M. Pacific time. Those of you who are eagerly awaiting preorders for the latest iPhone had better still be awake by then, because if history is any guide Apple will burn through the first wave of preorders before the sun comes up. Update: The Store is back up after a delay of nearly 40 minutes. Pre-orders have begun. If you were like me and hoping to snag an unlocked model, you're out of luck until November.

Apple's online store is currently down. We're not aware of any upcoming product launches, but the store going down in the middle of the week does usually mean it's not simple overnight maintenance. We'll keep our eye on the situation and let you know if anything new shows up when the store returns. Update: The store is back up, but there are no obvious changes. If you see anything we missed, let us know in the comments.

The store's down!* We're not sure why (if I had to guess, I'd say they're updating the listings for bumper cases, since those recently returned to the retail shelves), but we'll keep an eye on things and let you know what's new when it comes back. Meanwhile, don't panic. We want a new iPod nano, too, but you can surely wait a few more minutes until the store returns to normal. *In the United States, anyway. Update: The store is back up, but there are no obvious changes staring us in the face. If you see something we've missed, let us know in the comments.

Everyone's favorite sticky note has appeared on the Apple Store, which is down as of 12 A.M. Eastern. We're not aware of any upcoming products, and the store being down on any day other than Tuesday usually points to maintenance rather than new stuff. That said, we'll keep an eye on it and update if we see anything new when the store comes back up. As usual, thanks to everyone who tipped us off. Update: After roughly three hours of downtime, the store is back up with no obvious changes. Looks like it was just a maintenance update after all.

Although we're tempted to write a cute folksy post full of "G'day", "Mate", and "Wombat", we will refrain from the obvious. After all, we have too big a debt of gratitude to Australia (from the Wiggles to John Noble to Violet Crumble) to go that route. So, keeping it simple, here's a simple update that the Australian online Apple Store has gone offline, most likely in preparation for iPad preorders. So keep your eyes open and let us know what you see when the store comes back. One more thing: Aussie Aussie iPad! Oi oi oi![1] [1]We couldn't help ourselves there. Sorry. We just love Australia! (Update: Yes, the link is correct. Read the post in re the Australian connection.) Update: The store is back up. The iPad pre-order page still says: "Coming late May, Pre-order on 10 May." Update: Australians can now pre-order iPads, starting at A$629, approximately $560 in US currency. The highest end 64 GB 3G model retails for $1049 ($932) To obtain 3G service, Australians are told to purchase a 3G iPad, and then contact a carrier that offers iPad data plans to obtain a microSIM card.

In the course of Apple Events, there comes a time as FCC approvals draw near, and announcements hang in the balance, that the store goes down and a great hush goes through the land. It is a time of great reflection and contemplation as each of us stands with 'bated breath, anticipating the technology shortly to debut. Who are we kidding? Can'twaitcan'twait! Puppies! Rainbows! Unicorns! Tablets! Are you as excited as we are? Is the iPad going to be ready for pre-orders? Maybe this is *it*? Let us know in the comments. Update: As of about 5:40 PM ET, the store was back up! Thanks for all of the tips from readers.

  • Apple Store team busy installing extra noise, additional funk

As has been widely emailed by our crack readers, the Apple Store is down as of midnight. We'd chalk this up to actual maintenance, but since it is officially Tuesday on the US East Coast, we'll give it the new-product benefit of the doubt. Some items, including Airport Express units and the Mac Mini, have been reported in limited availability mode for a while, so it's possible that we'll see some revisions come daylight. We also have been told that the iPod touch January Update is mysteriously unavailable for purchase at the moment (thanks Will!) so perhaps that's in play as well. Of course, it could just be, you know, maintenance. The question must be considered: are the Apple Store outages really technically necessary to update the store content, or are they a form of grass-roots marketing that primes the buying audience for something new? After all, Amazon, Dell and Newegg add products constantly and never seem to stall into these extended cones of silence. Is the Tuesday lacuna just a passive-aggressive way to get our attention, like a child throwing a sulk? Recently, former Apple staffer Chuq von Rospach suggested via a Twitter response to Shawn King that the architecture of the Apple Store really, truly does require extended downtime to make changes to the product lineup. If that's the case, then this is an astonishingly powerful argument for the existence of the RDF -- only a marketing force capable of warping the fabric of space could turn an engineering flaw into self-generating hype with every minor tweak of the product line.Update 7 am ET: Looks like it was only maintenance after all. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • Happy Tuesday, everyone.
