  • PSA: August's Games With Gold now live

A new month brings with it new things. Most of them, like bills, aren't fun. But you know what is fun? Video games. And if you happen to be an Xbox Live Gold subscriber, there are four games you can snag this month for free, three of which have just gone live and are available right now. From today until August 15, you can dress your Xbox Avatar in some off-road gear and rev engines in Motorcross Madness for Xbox 360. Xbox One owners meanwhile can fly the unfriendly skies in either Crimson Dragon or Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut. In the former, players control a dragon. In the latter, you'll get behind the flight stick of a transforming spaceship fighter. The only deal not currently active is the Games With Gold offer of Dishonored. But that's okay; being the stealthy assassin he is, we imagine Corvo is just taking his sweet time to line up the perfect kill. Dishonored will sneak out of Games With Gold's shadow on August 16 and remain free until August 31. [Image: Microsoft]

  • PSN Store Update: Lego The Hobbit, Strike Suit Zero, Persona 4

This week's PSN update brings PlayStation systems the the smallest of people in their smallest versions, courtesy of the newly released Lego: The Hobbit. It's out at retailers for PS4, PS3, and Vita, but if you'd prefer a download version it's also on the PlayStation Store. That'll set you back $60 on PS4, $50 on PS3 and $30 on Vita, so if you're after the smaller of prices, King Oddball at $7 might pick your fancy. The physics-based puzzler has an Angry Birds flavor, except it has a floating rock head who chucks smaller rocks around with his bizarrely long tongue. Oh and he has a crown on his head. It's been out on Vita for a little while as well as iOS, Android, and a few other platforms, but this is its debut on PS4. PS4 also has the new Director's Cut of Strike Suit Zero for $20, while the PS3 makes do with a Sonic Unleashed download for the same price. If you're after a more palatable vintage, Persona 4 is this week's PS2 Classic re-release, meaning you can get it on PS3 for $10. Finally, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark is the latest PS Plus freebie for subscribers, and Episode 3 of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us is available to PS3 owners, priced at $5. [Image: Atlus]

Interstellar combat game Strike Suit Zero: The Director's Cut launches worldwide on Xbox One on April 8, and on PS4 in the US the same day – the UK PS4 launch is on April 9. The UK price is £16 on Xbox One and £15.40 on PS4. Last we heard, Strike Suit Zero: The Director's Cut was scheduled to launch at the end of March, but what's a week among lightyears, really? (Yes, we know that lightyears are a measure of distance, not time, but just roll with it.) The latest video features developers from Born Ready Games discussing next-gen launch plans and upgrades to the game. Strike Suit Zero hit PC in 2013, and The Director's Cut includes all DLC, plus upgraded graphics and a rebalanced campaign. [Image: Born Ready Games]

Discount PC gaming retailer Indie Royale has started a new initiative dubbed Daily Royale whose purpose is to offer even bigger discounts on select games. The catch? You'll need to be fast to take advantage of these deals. Though Daily Royale only sells digital games, it does so using redeemable codes, and the site usually only has a limited number of codes to work with. The inaugural offering from the service is space shooter Strike Suit Zero at $5 (instead of its normal $20 price point), and with just under 67 hours left, Daily Royale has 942 codes remaining. Expect those to go quickly once word spreads of this site. Despite its name, Daily Royale plans to offer two new sales a week initially, with more frequent sales appearing once the site has established itself. If you'd like to make sure you're up to date on what Daily Royale has on offer, signing up for the site's newsletter is the fastest way to get updates on new sales. For those of you unwilling to leave the warm, soothing cocoon of social media however, there are also Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep tabs on.

This week I'd like to throw around a few ideas for enjoying yourself in Star Citizen's absence. Yeah, there's the hangar module, and it's pretty spectacular for what it is. But after dorking around in cockpits and doing a few I'll-be-in-my-bunk Jayne Cobb impersonations as I wedge my avatar into my Aurora's sleeping compartment, I ache to spool up those engines and go somewhere. Fortunately there are a ton of worthy space sims that we can use to while away the next couple of years. Or the next couple of months, because dogfighting alpha!

After our time with EVE VR at E3, we can't even imagine playing a space combat game without an Oculus Rift. Thankfully, the developers behind space dogfighter Strike Suit Zero understand this and have released a beta version with a redesigned HUD and UI elements for the Oculus Rift VR headset. You'll need access to an Oculus Rift dev kit and a copy of Strike Suit Zero to make this work, of course. The developer has also set aside a special area in its forums for feedback on the new beta version. Strike Suit Zero launched back in January, a game whose chief mechanic is the Strike Suit – an advanced aircraft that can freely transform between space fighter and mech. Strike Suit Zero is currently available for $20 on Steam right now; a standalone score-based version called Strike Suit Infinity launched back in April for $7.

Space shooter Strike Suit Zero, from developer Born Ready Games, has achieved its Kickstarter goal of $100K with 14 days to go. With the first objective accomplished, it's on to stretch goals. The first, $130K, will see mod tools created for the game. Should the project make it to $180K, Mac and Linux versions will be created in addition to PC.The pledge that pushed Strike Suit Zero past its goal was made by Steve Masters, lead designer of Assassin's Creed 3. Eurogamer reports that Masters, as it turns out, once worked for Born Ready head James Brooksby doing QA for a "space game" called Halcyon Sun. It was Masters' first job in the game industry.%Gallery-170125%

Strike Suit Zero developer Born Ready Games is launching a Kickstarter to finish the project. The money is "necessary to keep the game in development for a few more months.""Strike Suit Zero is incredibly close to being the game we want it to be, but we've realized that we need a little more time, which means that the budget needed to be increased," said Born Ready Games CEO James Brooksby. "We hope that with the help of Kickstarter we can bring Strike Suit Zero to launch as the best space combat title the genre has seen for over a decade, and at the same time connect with space game fans around the world."One of the bonuses to early backers of the project is access to the game's PC beta. The final game is still planned for PC, Xbox Live and PSN.We were first introduced to Strike Suit Zero at last year's Gamescom. The interstellar arcade shooter features mechanical designs by Junji Okubo (Appleseed: Ex Machina, Steel Battalion) and music by Paul Ruskay (Homeworld) and Kokia (Tales of Innocence). The game was originally planned for Q1 2012.

Doublesix games, developers of the manic Burn Zombie Burn! and the upcoming All Zombies Must Die!, are confronting threats from the void with Strike Suit Zero. The interstellar arcade shooter, which totally has a ship that transforms into a robot, features spacecrafts created by mechanical design engineer Junji Okubo (Appleseed: Ex Machina, Steel Battalion) and music from award-winning sound designer Paul Ruskay (Homeworld). Strike Suit Zero has players taking control of the transforming spacecraft during Earth's final hours, with the player's actions apparently having an effect on their path through the game's branching mission structure. Details are very scarce, but we should learn more next week when the title is presented at Germany's Gamescom. It's currently set to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC sometime in Q1 2012.%Gallery-130233%
