  • ARM CEO Warren East will retire in July, president Simon Segars to take over

Warren East has overseen a sharp rise in the fortunes of ARM Holdings plc over the last few years, but tonight the company announced he will step down effective July 1st. Stepping into the lead role is current president Simon Segars, who has been with the company in a number of positions since 1991. East has been successful in expanding ARM's business from one product line when he took over in 2001 to a technology offering used by over 300 chip customers to make 9 billion chips last year, according to chairman John Buchanan. He's also had a reputation for interesting quotes and predictions, with some (Windows on ARM) working out better than others (netbooks taking over the market.) We interviewed Segars both at CES and MWC earlier this year, you can check out the videos embedded after the break.

  • Officers' Quarters: From girlfriend to guild leader

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader's Handbook, available from No Starch Press. Oh, boy. Let me sit here for a moment facepalming while I take in what I've just read. It's been a while since I've received an email with this much fail, so forgive me if I ease into it. I'll warn you that the email is long. I've chopped it down as much as I dare. You really need to get the full story to appreciate what happened here. Without further ado, let's jump in: Hey Scott- I've been an officer in this particular guild for a long time and a member for several years and recently things have become very taxing for myself and several officers. A little background on the guild. We are a large PVE/PVP guild on a PVE server. We have around 500 members... It's a crazy collection of hardcore players and newer players... We have several raids going 4 nights a week in addition to pugs and rated battle grounds going almost non stop when raids were not in session. Now the problems in the guild started last fall right before the launch of SWTOR... Our guild leader and his wife had done a great job leading the guild. She was the CO-GL in name only as she really was the leader. Our guild leaders and several other officers and guild members decided they were going to quit... This is where problems started creeping in...

  • Apple's board discussing eventual Steve Jobs successor

    by

According to The Wall Street Journal, some of Apple's board members have been informally discussing an eventual successor to Steve Jobs since the CEO began his latest medical leave earlier this year. These board members "have discussed CEO succession with executive recruiters and at least one head of a high-profile technology company," though the Journal says they're not actively engaged in recruiting a new CEO. The Journal notes that not all board members have been involved in the discussion (obviously Jobs himself wouldn't have been), and it also says management succession plans are discussed at every board meeting, though such plans are "sworn to secrecy." Steve Jobs reportedly responded to the report via email, saying "I think it's hogwash." Either this means the Journal's report is inaccurate in some way, or Jobs may have been kept out of the loop on the discussions. For his part, Jobs has given no indication that he will step down anytime soon, though many financial analysts have grown increasingly skittish following the CEO's ongoing (and over-publicized) medical issues and Apple's intense privacy surrounding the succession plan.

  • Ive due $30m stock windfall, may seek relocation back to UK

Other than Steve Jobs' brain, the mind most clearly at work in Apple's history of compelling and human-centric products belongs to Jonathan 'Jony' Ive, 44. After joining Apple in 1992, he rose to become the company's senior vice president of product design and has contributed his own clean, minimalist aesthetic to the wall of industrial design legends. With Tim Cook firmly established as the executive/operations lead on Apple's depth chart, anyone looking for the creative future of Apple has to have Ive at, or near, the top of the list. Today's Times of London (behind paywall) reports that Ive is about to reap the rewards of his service and dedication. Ive received a 'golden handcuffs' option grant in 2008 when Apple's stock was at a low ebb of around $100, allowing him to buy shares that -- having remained in Apple's employ -- he is now eligible to sell. Ive's profits from these options could approach $30 million, thanks to the dramatic runup in AAPL over the past two years. With his additional wealth -- his net worth after the options cash in is estimated at $128 million -- Ive and his wife Heather might want to move back to England with their twin sons. The Times suggests that Ive and the Apple board have "been at loggerheads" over Ive's desire to spend more time back home, but the Ives reportedly want to educate their children in England. Ive owns a manor house worth about $4 million in Somerset. The paper quotes an anonymous friend of the Ives on the topic of a commute from the UK to Cupertino: "Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them ... It's a shame. We hardly ever see anyone at the house." Apple's spokesperson gave the Times a 'no comment' on the option grant and deemed the report of his desire to move to England "speculation." • Continuity: Executive succession plans in history

We all know that Steve Jobs will eventually leave Apple, and Apple's executive team has a responsibility to draft a succession plan to help minimize the turmoil when that day comes. To figure out what Apple might do, we can look to the past for other examples. Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford. In 1918, at the age of 55, Henry handed the presidency of the company to his son Edsel. When Edsel died in 1943, Henry came back to Ford Motor Company ill, "mentally inconsistent, suspicious, and generally no longer fit" for the job. Most of the board didn't want him to be president. Even with no official title, he'd been in de facto control of the company since Edsel took over. Nevertheless, the board elected him (rather than cross him), and he served until the end of the second World War. Gravely ill, he turned control of the company over to his grandson, Henry Ford II, in 1945. Henry Ford died two years later. Steve Jobs has four children, the oldest of whom is Lisa Brennan-Jobs, a 30-year-old journalist. None have publicly expressed any desire to run Apple.

Today's Moviewatch is a mystery that we're looking to solve. Pinkhair, a well-known 3D WoW machinimator that often helps others with their projects, has released a teaser for his upcoming movie, Succession. The film is due in Summer 2008, but the problem is that we have no clue what it's about!Pinkhair's work on this teaser was so good that many WCM commenters accused him of stealing scenes from a Blizzard cinematic trailer. However, he released a picture of his Arthas model to reassure them that the talent was all his. We'll just have to wait and see if the movie is worth it, as the clip is way too short to tell us anything.[Via Warcraftmovies.com]If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.Previously on Moviewatch ...
