Swords and Soldiers HD, Two Tribes' hi-res port of Awesomenauts developer Ronimo Games' first game, will launch on the Wii U eShop next Thursday, May 22. The game will arrive simultaneously in North America and Europe, and will cost $2.99 (2.99 euros). Two Tribes announced the HD port in March, years after the game's first arrival on Wii in North America in June 2009. Swords and Soldiers HD will retain the original game's levels while featuring both Wii Remote and Game Pad touch-screen controls, a multiplayer mode and higher-resolution visuals. The tower defense game has found a home on many platforms, including Steam in December 2010 and PSN in September 2010. [Image: Two Tribes]

Swords and Soldiers, the tower defense game that first appeared on WiiWare in June 2009, will now see a release on the Wii U eShop in April. While the first game was created by Awesomenauts developer Ronimo Games, fellow Dutch studio and Toki Tori developer Two Tribes teamed up with Ronimo to upgrade the game and optimize it for Wii U. Swords and Soldiers will be playable using either Wii Remote on televisions or via the Wii U GamePad with a "custom touch scheme." Players can use both play styles in the game's multiplayer mode as well. Two Tribes boasted "high-res HD graphics" for the Wii U port, which will arrive at the end of April. Ronimo Games is currently developing a sequel to the game, Swords and Soldiers 2, which was announced in February. Two Tribes cut its development staff and effectively "rebooted" the studio in January. [Image: Ronimo Games]

In typical Humble Bundle fashion, the initial lineup of great games included in Humble Android Bundle 4 has had even more great games piled on top of it. Five more games are now included to previous purchasers and those who pledge more than $6.25 from here on out – Canabalt, Cogs, Swords & Soldiers HD, Zen Bound 2 and Avadon: The Black Fortress.Avadon: The Black Fortress is a tablet-only, class-based tactical RPG from Spiderweb Software; Cogs is the acclaimed 3D puzzle game from Lazy 8 Studios where players must move pieces around on a 3D cube. Swords & Soldiers HD is Ronimo Games' casual-friendly side-scrolling strategy game where you manage unit spawning and steamroll everything in your path.Zen Bound 2 is an artistic 3D puzzler where players are tasked with wrapping as little twine as possible around wooden objects to complete beautiful, simple sculptures. Finally, Canabalt is Adam Saltsman's excellent free-runner about standing up to the government and hating boxes. Oh man does that game make you hate boxes. And as with the original lineup, each of these new games also include their respective soundtracks.

  • Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

First released on Steam in December 2010, the side-scrolling strategy game is receiving a fresh single-player campaign this week in the form of ten levels for two dollars. Players control Chief Meat on his quest to the annual Super Saucy Sausage Fest, while utilizing new units and spells. The content pack also includes a bonus challenge mode called "Boulder XL."

If you have an Android phone, you've probably been eagerly awaiting this day: the day when Semi Secret Software's auto-runner Canabalt jumps through a window and lands on Android. Not only is it out today, it's part of a new Android-focused Humble Bundle.Other games in today's pay-what-you-want charity collection include Zen Bound 2, Cogs, and Spiderweb's Avadon: The Black Fortress. Those who pay over the average also get Swords & Soldiers.Though it's an Android bundle, buying it gets you access to all the games across PC, Mac, and Linux as well, plus soundtracks for everything but Avadon. And, of course, you get the positive feeling of contributing to charity or whatever.

  • Humble Bundle brings Canabalt and more to Android

January saw the release of the first ever Humble Bundle for Android, and now the organization is back with a first of another sort for the platform -- five of them, in fact. The second mobile-focused Humble Bundle sees five games making their Android debut, including iPhone favorite Canabalt (now with a two-player mode and Android-exclusive 3D option), plus Zen Bound 2, Cogs, Swords and Soldiers and Avadon: The Black Fortress HD (the latter specific to Android tablets). Along with those comes a beta version of Humble Bundle's own app (up from an alpha release before), which makes it a bit easier to download the games and check for updates since all of this is handled outside of Google Play. As with all Humble Bundles, you can set your own price for the bundle, with an amount of your choosing going to the Child's Play charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and you'll also get desktop versions of all five games for Windows, Mac and Linux. A Steam key is included with all purchases over $1 as well (although it doesn't yet include Canabalt), and they've even thrown in soundtracks for three of the games for good measure.

  • More app sales: King of Dragon Pass, Swords and Soldiers and Crescent Moon RPGs

We'll do one more big app roundup post today before the holiday weekend. The App Store freeze went off as scheduled yesterday, so devs can no longer change their prices or upgrade their apps until next week, but in addition to the sales already covered so far, there are still a few more apps on sale worth pointing out for you: Konami's got the charming Gesundheit on sale, 99 cents on the iPhone and $1.99 on the iPad. The very well-reviewed King of Dragon Pass is 20% off, $7.99. I already mentioned Chillingo having most of their titles on sale, but it's worth mentioning as well that Anomaly: Warzone Earth and Swords and Soldiers are both on sale. Com2Us has put all of its titles on sale as well, including the popular Tower Defense: Lost Earth. Crescent Moon's got Pocket RPG iPhone edition down to a buck, and it's done the same with Rimelands and Aralon, two excellent games. Polarbit also has a bunch of fun titles on sale. And Telltale has big discounts going on its titles as well. As I said yesterday, there's lots more out there, so if there's an app you've been wanting, chances are that it's on sale. Unfortunately for smaller developers, I just checked the top paid apps on the store, and EA has claimed most of the spots already, with Angry Birds and Sega filling out most of the other real estate. It looks like Electronic Arts is all set to ring in the holidays with another huge batch of app sales, as people open up those new iPhones and iPads over the weekend.

  • Bungie's Marathon, Swords and Soldiers now available on the App Store

    07.07.2011

Two games we've been eager to see on the App Store have arrived. First up, the unofficial version of Marathon (that's officially approved anyway) is out and ready for you to play. It's a free app by programmer Daniel Blezek, who translated Bungie's old FPS from the Mac to Apple's tablet. This is excellent stuff; old-time gamers will enjoy the nostalgia hit, while younger players should be interested to see what Bungie did before Halo. It's an excellent game, and we couldn't ask for a better way to get it ported to the iPad. Second, Chillingo has published Swords and Soldiers, a cartoony 2D real-time strategy game that was originally released for the Wii. I like both the console and iOS versions, which offers Game Center integration, three campaigns and a skirmish mode, with controls that are well adapted for the touch screen. Unfortunately, it isn't universal -- the game's US$2.99 for the iPhone and $4.99 for the iPad -- but given how different the two versions are to play, maybe that makes sense. At any rate, this one didn't quite get the spotlight it could have used on the Wii, so maybe on iOS (like World of Goo, another Wii title turned iOS hit) Swords and Soldiers will the audience it deserves.

  • 11 PSN games discounted by 50% tomorrow

Tomorrow's PSN update will be notable for what it adds to the PlayStation Store, though you may be a little fonder of what it's set to remove: fifty percent from the price of 11 games in an "11 for 2011" sale. Among the discounted games are Double's Fine enchanting Costume Quest for $7.49, hypnotic brick breaker Shatter for $3.99 (its excellent soundtrack is also discounted to $2.99), and Hoard for $7.49 -- a fitting saving for a dragon looking to amass a boast-worthy pile of presents and a roast-worthy mass of peasants. Sony has also included other well-received games like Swords and Soldiers, Tumble and Space Invaders Infinity Gene in the sale (valid in the US, Canada and Mexico through January 31). Have a peek at the full list after the break. Warning: Peggle is in there too.

Ronimo Games has released a new patch for Swords and Soldiers on the PlayStation Network, bringing PlayStation Move support to the cartoony and entertaining 2D RTS title. Now you can control your little Vikings and Aztecs just by waving your hand -- presuming that your hand is holding one of those Move wands with the glowing ball on top. The company also tells us that the PC version's release on Steam last week went well and, to celebrate, is making the game available for 20% off the usual price -- just $7.99 after the discount.

  • Swords and Soldiers marching onto Steam December 1

Romino Games has hinted at a PC release of its sidescrolling strategy title (man, it still feels weird to type that combination of genres) Swords and Soldiers since it first launched on WiiWare last June. Apparently, it firmed up the game's PC release plans over the weekend -- Steam is currently listing the game's launch date as this coming Wednesday, December 1. No pricing information was included on the game's info page, though we imagine it will resemble the game's $10 price point on Wii. Unless, of course, the PC port is infused with an additional helping of MoreFun -- we wouldn't mind paying a small surcharge for an extra shot of that vitally important attribute.

Not only is the WiiWare title Swords and Soldiers coming to PSN, but Ronimo Games has also commanded it to attack the PC. The 2D real-time strategy combat title will offer up all of the levels and features of the other versions, but will offer mouse control and include Steam Achievements as well. No release date nor pricing has been announced, but we're assured all of that is coming soon. We're going to call this one good news -- Swords and Soldiers was a good addition to the Wii's downloadable lineup, and it'll be nice to let a bigger audience get a good look at this original title. %Gallery-101501%

  • Swords & Soldiers coming to PSN this fall, published by Sony Online Entertainment

    07.16.2010

Sony Online Entertainment isn't all bad news today. The publisher announced that it's working with developer Ronimo Games to bring the cute side-scrolling RTS, Swords & Soldiers, to PSN. Originally released on WiiWare in June 2009, Swords & Soldiers allows players to control caricatured versions of Viking, Aztec or Chinese armies in both single-player missions and multiplayer battles. The PSN version will, in addition to lovely HD graphics, add online multiplayer. It also offers "up to 20 PlayStation Network trophies," so you'll be able to earn a more tangible reward for your time instead of merely throwing it away on "fun" -- or "Morefun," as the case may be. SOE plans to release Swords & Soldiers "early this Fall." The game's ESRB rating mentions a Windows PC release as well, which was not announced. We're checking with SOE.

Ronimo Games, developer of Wii sleeper de Blob, has announced that its next game -- the side-scrolling FPS Swords & Soldiers -- will hit Europe on May 15. The distinctly designed WiiWare release will cost 1000 points. "B-but what about us?," you ask. We're assuming you're in the US, so we have some good (albeit vague) news: Ronimo has also confirmed that game will hack-'n'-slash its way Stateside soon after the EU release. Here's hoping that "soon" means the following Monday, May 18.[Via GoNintendo]
