TAG Heuer covered its smartwatch in real diamonds

If you like your tech on the bling side, we've got good news for you. Watchmaker TAG Heuer has revamped its 18K white gold Connected Modular 45 smartwatch with no less than 589 baguette-sized diamonds -- 23.35 carats' worth in fact -- and it can be yours for a mere $197,000 (£143,000). The watch, which takes the title of most expensive smartwatch in the world, is basically just last year's $1,600 Connected Modular 45 with a makeover. Underneath all the ice is the same Android 2.0 device with the same tech. And while there was surprising demand for the original when it first came out, something tells us that the Full Diamond model won't see quite the same level of sales.

Tag Heuer made a smaller modular smartwatch

Those of us with smaller wrists may have noticed that most of the connected smartwatches out there are, well, kind of huge. Tag Heuer's Connected Modular 45, for example, was a lovely device with a 45mm case diameter, perfect for larger wrists but lousy for everyone else. The company has now decided to support the smaller among us with a new Connected Modular 41, with — you guessed it — a watch with a 41mm diameter for those with more diminutive extremities.

Tag Heuer's 'modular' smartwatch isn't actually modular

Webster's dictionary may define "modular" as "constructed with standardized units," but in tech, that buzzword has a slightly different meaning. A modular device usually has swappable components that bring additional functionality. But Tag Heuer is going with the original definition of the word for its latest high-end Android Wear smartwatch. The Connected Modular 45 is the follow-up to the company's surprisingly successful debut smartwatch that came out last year. The company's sophomore offering is a highly customizable device that lets you swap out the "smart" module for a mechanical timepiece, turning it into just another analog luxury watch with a multi-thousand-dollar price tag. You can change other components of the watch, too. Starting at $1,600, the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 is a refinement of the original and, like its predecessor, will appeal to only very select group of people.

Intel wants to be a tech 'enabler' for the fashion industry

The line between technology and fashion is blurring. Brands and designers are now using electronics to make cutting-edge wearables and experiences, while companies like Amazon are trying to break into a space that hasn't until now been very welcoming of outsiders. Intel is another tech company that's set its sights on the fashion world, with various smart garments and accessories, including dresses, glasses and bracelets. In an interview at SXSW, Intel Vice President Sandra Lopez said her team's mission is to be an enabler first and foremost rather than trying to become a fashion brand unto itself.

TAG Heuer made a modular $1,650 smartwatch

When TAG Heuer released its first smartwatch two years ago, it had an $1,800 asking price and was dubbed the most expensive Android Wear device on the market. Still, more than 56,000 people bought it, which is certainly enough reason for the Swiss watchmaker to give smartwatches another shot. And so it has. Say hello to the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45, the company's second Android Wear collaboration with Intel and Google. The starting price is still pretty high at $1,650 (£1,400), but the cost might be worth it this time. The reason: The Modular 45 comes with interchangeable parts, making the watch a lot more versatile than its predecessor.

Those rumors of TAG Heuer unveiling its next Android Wear watch this month? They're true. The brand has posted a pair of teasers confirming that it will unveil a future Connected smartwatch on March 14th. There are no major giveaways regarding the design (surprise: it'll likely be familiar), but there is a hint that it'll be better-suited to women's wrists than the chunky original. In a teaser video, TAG chief Jean-Claude Biver says that women had input -- don't be surprised if you see an option for a smaller case, different colors and other features that make the wristwear more accessible.

TAG Heuer's next smartwatch may include a swappable timepiece

TAG Heuer has dropped a few hints about its plans for a successor to the Connected, but the biggest news may be what it isn't mentioning. Android Central sources claim that TAG is working on the Connected Modular, a "fully customizable" Android Wear 2.0 watch that would let you not only replace the straps, but the timepiece itself. Reportedly, you could swap in an automatic mechanical watch module on demand -- say, for social occasions when you feel that a smartwatch would be too gauche. That would be far more convenient than TAG's current strategy, which gives you the 'privilege' of buying a mechanical equivalent to the Connected (at the same price as your original watch) after the warranty expires.

I'm not much of a smartwatch guy, but I like my LG R Android Wear watch and its bright OLED screen. An acquaintance recently expressed admiration for it, and to my surprise, came back the next day with a $1,500 Tag Heuer Connected. ("Must be nice to have money," I thought.) He wasn't alone, though: In an interview with German site NZZ, Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver said that over 56,000 people bought one, tripling expected sales. As a result, the Swiss company will release new smartwatch models in May and expects to sell 150,000 units.

What do you do when you've got an empty wrist and almost $10,000 burning a hole in your pocket? Buy a rose gold smartwatch from Tag Heuer. To match your phone, private jet, toothbrush and crippling sense of loneliness brought upon by spending too much money on not-pink gadgets, of course. This Tag Heuer Connected isn't available online, so that means you'll have to trudge down to a jewelry store to get your mitts on one. And it might be your only shot at a luxury smartwatch now that Apple's stepped out of the game.

Smartphone makers have churned out watch after watch in hopes of happening upon something game-changing. If nothing else, they're getting good at making pretty gear. Still, none of them have the clout that horological giant Tag Heuer does, which is why our collective ears perked up when we heard that the Swiss company was making an Android Wear watch. The result is the Tag Heuer Connected, a watch that looks like some of the company's most iconic models ... and works just like every other Android Wear device out there. At $1,500 (£1,050), it's also the most expensive Android Wear watch around, but -- spoiler alert -- it's hardly worth the price.

  • TAG Heuer's Android smartwatch is (relatively) popular

TAG Heuer's $1,500 Connected smartwatch may have been a big gamble, but it's paying off... relatively speaking. LVMH watch chief Jean-Claude Biver tells Bloomberg that his company is upping production of the Android Wear timepiece to meet demand from retailers, and it's even freezing online sales until May or June for the sake of giving physical stores a better shot. However, the numbers aren't about to keep established smartwatch makers awake at night. Production is increasing from 1,200 per week to a not-so-whopping 2,000 -- for context, IDC estimates that Apple sold 3.9 million smartwatches in the third quarter, or about 43,000 per day. TAG's device is successful in the luxury world's terms, but numerous smartwatch brands will easily outsell it.

TAG Heuer unveiled its first smartwatch called Connected at an event today. The 155-year-old luxury watch company turned to its classic Carrera for inspiration. But for the innards of the watch, it tapped into Google for its Android Wear software and leaned on Intel for its sensors and processing. To make room for the computing capabilities, they went with a large sized watch -- 46.2mm across and 12.8mm thick -- that's currently available only for men. The watchmaker announced that a women's version is in the making, but for now the men's only watch is available at 20 stores across the country for $1,500.

Before we kitted them out with high-res AMOLED screens and WiFi, luxury watches were the sorts of thing you could wind up and pass down through the ages. With its new Connected smartwatch (seriously, its name is "Connected") TAG Heuer thinks it's captured "eternity in a box" and restored a sense of legacy to an otherwise obsolescing wearable. Erm, we'll see about that. Long story short, it's a $1,500 Android Wear watch that you'll be able to trade in for a mechanical version after two years if the whole connected lifestyle really isn't for you.

After months upon months of hype, Intel and TAG Heuer are finally ready to show their Android Wear smartwatch to the world. The two are hosting a live stream at 11AM Eastern to spill the beans on the Carrera Wearable 01, billed as the first Google-powered luxury watch. We know a handful of details about the wristwear (such as its $1,800 price tag, Intel components and familiar design), but there are still a few things up in the air. Will it really get that vaunted 40-hour battery life? What kind of bands can you choose from? And will the software deliver anything beyond the usual Android Wear experience? We're on the ground at the event to get the full scoop first-hand, but you can tune in below if you just can't wait to get details.

Normally, when a company changes its mind about the pricing of a forthcoming gadget, it's to surprise us all with a nice discount. Luxury watch brand TAG Heuer, on the other hand, felt that its first smartwatch, the Carrera Wearable 01, was actually too cheap at $1,400. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Jean-Claude Biver revealed that the timepiece, created with Google and Intel, will now actually retail for $1,800. Biver also let slip that the watch will launch on November 9th at the LVMH building in New York. The executive also feels that $1,800 is a fair price for the unit, since it's only a few hundred bucks more than you'd pay for an Apple Watch Hermés Collection -- produced by a rival luxury goods brand that may, one day, be owned by TAG's parent company.

So much for hopes that TAG Heuer's first smartwatch will cost less than its conventional counterparts. Jean-Claude Biver, the head of TAG's parent company LVMH, says that the Android Wear timepiece will cost about $1,400 when it ships in October or November. That's in the ballpark of lower-end quartz models from the watchmaker's Formula 1 line, but it makes even the $1,000 steel link Apple Watch seem like a relative bargain. That money will get you more than just a luxurious brand name, however. Biver estimates that the TAG Heuer device will last 40 hours on battery, so you won't have to panic if you forget to top it up one day. This is just a friendly reminder that watch prices at this level are dictated more by the design than what's inside -- a nice steel watch won't come cheap. There's been plenty of speculation as to how Switzerland's watch making industry will deal with smartwatches. In Tag Heuer's case, the company has decided that if it can't beat Google, it might as well join it, which is why the firm has announced it'll be the first to produce "luxury" Android Wear devices. In addition to working with the search engine, Tag is also enlisting the services of Intel to help build the hardware that'll power this new wearable.

Tag Heuer's all set to take on the Apple Watch, and it's slated to reveal the new device sometime today. If you recall, the Swiss company has said that it's also making a smartwatch shortly after Cupertino announced its own last year. According to Reuters, Tag Heuer's parent corporation LVMH has teamed up with Intel to create a digital version of one of its most iconic models: the original black Carrera pictured above. It will reportedly still look like the non-digital version, except it will be able to track geolocation, the distance you've walked and your current altitude.
