Netflix sure has a knack for timing -- while Michelle Wolf was busy running the show at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the streaming service posted the first trailer for her weekly talk show The Break. The clip (which has Wolf fighting relegation to a tiny window on Netflix's 'Next Episode' screen) gives a feel for what you can expect. It promises to be light-hearted, but not completely sanitized. The Daily Show veteran has hinted that her show will include the sort of jokes she "couldn't do on TV."

Hulu might not be as committed to streaming talk shows as Netflix, but its fledgling efforts are paying off. The company has renewed Sarah Silverman's I Love You, America for a second season, with the 11-episode run beginning on September 6th. While there aren't any clues as to what's on deck, it's safe to presume the show will continue to focus on the cultural and political landscape of the US, using chats with notable figures (such as Roxane Gay and Patton Oswalt) as a hook.

Netflix isn't done with its talk show spending spree just yet. The service has ordered 10 episodes of Norm Macdonald Has A Show (E-I-E-I-O?), a guest-oriented talk show from its namesake Saturday Night Live veteran. There's no mention of an air date, but Macdonald's podcast co-host Adam Eget will serve as a sidekick, while fellow Netflix host David Letterman will act as an advisor. This has been in the works for a while, it seems: Macdonald had hinted at the Netflix deal in a Reddit AMA from late January.

Netflix is determined to cement its place in the talk show landscape. The streaming service has unveiled plans for a weekly late-night show hosted by Michelle Wolf, a contributor to the Daily Show and a veteran comedienne. While the half-hour program doesn't even have a title yet, it won't be limited to politics and will include the risqué humor "we couldn't do on TV," according to Wolf. The series will debut sometime later in 2018.

Facebook has been pushing into original television for a little while now. It launched the Watch section as a platform for TV shows last year, and has since teamed up with the creators of True Blood for a new drama called Sacred Lies. Now the company is apparently set to bring Jada Pinkett Smith, her daughter Willow and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris to a new talkshow that will deal with social and other timely issues.

While Chelsea Handler's talk show on Netflix is on its way out, the company is taking a different approach with a new attempt featuring David Letterman as shown by its first trailer. My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is scheduled for six 60-minute episodes with George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, Howard Stern and President Barack Obama slated to visit. The first episode, with Obama, will arrive January 12th, with new ones released monthly. The show will take place inside and outside the studio, as Letterman returns to TV for the first time since leaving the Late Show on CBS in 2015.

More than three years after Chelsea Handler and Netflix teamed up to "revolutionize the talk show" their quest is coming to an end. Handler tweeted that she has decided not to return after the second season of Chelsea wraps up (later this year), instead focusing on "becoming a more knowledgeable and engaged citizen" ahead of upcoming elections. That doesn't mean she's through with Netflix however, as she says the two will release a documentary where she engages with "people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies."

Medium snaps up Talkshow and its public chat app

Talkshow's namesake chat-in-public app never really caught on, but that doesn't mean the team's story has ended just yet. Co-founder Michael Sippey has revealed that Medium has bought Talkshow Industries. It's a tiny outfit, but it's important enough that Sippey will become Medium's Head of Product and help the service "evolve" its paid writing model. Sippey isn't providing any specific clues as to what he'll do next. However, he has confirmed that both Talkshow and Episode (an unfinished podcast discovery app) are shutting down.

If you tried Talkshow's public-facing chatrooms but left wondering why they were necessary, you're not alone. The startup is shutting down its service after determining that it won't be "big enough" to have its intended effect. As of November 1st, Talkshow's iOS app is no longer available in the App Store. You can participate in conversations until November 8th, when everything will revert to a read-only mode. You'll have the option of exporting your chats after that, but you'll have to act quickly -- everything will turn off on December 1st.

Talkshow offers the ability to host your own AMAs

A few months ago, a messaging app called Talkshow debuted with an interesting premise: all of your conversations on it are public. Everyone can "listen in" on the chatrooms you create, sort of like podcasting but in text form. One of the ways it differentiated itself from Twitter is that strangers can't just butt into the discussions -- they have to be invited. Otherwise, they could only offer canned responses. Now, however, outsiders can participate in a more engaged way, thanks to a new feature called Q&A.

  • Talkshow is a messaging app that wants you to text in public

There's a new messaging app in town and it's called Talkshow. But unlike most other messaging apps, the conversations you have on it aren't private. Co-founded by former Twitter exec Michael Sippey, Talkshow's big idea is that your banter is public for all the world to see. Calling Talkshow a "messaging" app is therefore a bit of a misnomer. It's really more like a public-facing chatroom, or a liveblog but for everyday people (which, yes, sounds a lot like Twitter). As Sippey said in an introductory blog post, it's essentially you and your friends texting in public.

We've been hearing about how Netflix and Chelsea Handler would "revolutionize the talk show" for nearly two years. On May 11th, though, the streaming service's first show to feature that format will make its debut. Each episode will be 30 minutes long and stream three times a week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. And yes, they'll be commercial-free. We still don't know the title of the show just yet, but that's expected to be announced this week. Handler already debuted the four-episode comedic documentary series Chelsea Does on Netflix in January and will stream a stand-up special as well.

Netflix is adding a new category to its rapidly expanding stable of original content: the talk show. The subscription video service confirmed long-running rumors today, announcing it's signed a deal with comedian and host Chelsea Handler for a show it will begin distributing in early 2016. The "world'’s leading Internet TV Network" plans to create a show for all of its territories that viewers can enjoy however and whenever they like. Before that happens, Netflix and Handler will team up for a stand-up special Uganda Be Kidding Me that will tape tomorrow in Chicago and come to the service on October 10th. She's also going to wrap up the seventh season of her current show Chelsea Lately (not familiar? A sample from its YouTube channel is included after the break.) for the E! network on August 26th and in 2015, create four "docu-comedy" specials for Netflix. The specials will show Chelsea trying to learn about subjects including NASCAR, politics, Silicon Valley and the NBA Draft and of course, lead in to the "First-Ever Talk Show for the Global On-Demand Generation."
