  • Activision hires Team 17 founder to start new UK mobile studio

While EA has been bullish as all get out on its mobile and iOS properties, we haven't seen the other big dog in game publishing, Activision, act on the same impulses, despite a few hits with the Call of Duty Zombies games. But here's a first indication that Bobby Kotick and company do have a mobile strategy: They've hired former Team 17 (of Worms fame) Martyn Brown to put together a mobile studio in the UK. There's no word on the studio's name yet, or what they're going to be working on (though presumably, it'll be iOS titles at least, with other mobile platforms on tap in the future). The move is being seen as a vote of confidence by Activision for UK game development, especially since in the past few years that company hasn't been very friendly to its UK game studios, closing them down left and right. I'm very curious to see how this works out -- hopefully, Activision has realized along with EA that iOS development is one of the best parts of the game industry to be in right now.

  • Team 17's Worms Revolution coming to PC and consoles, built with new engine

Developer Team 17 has announced Worms Revolution, a new title in the Worms series ... wait, come back! It really is new. Worms Revolution has been "developed from the ground up" using a brand new engine. Team 17 promises "exciting new features and challenges" as well as returning favorites. The press release specifically mentions the Holy Hand Grenade and Super Sheep, and keen-eyed observers will spot the Concrete Donkey and Airstrike weapons in the announcement trailer as well.Team 17 is keeping quiet on the new features, though there is some more info to be gleaned from the trailer. There appears to be a new water bomb (probably the water balloon seen in the logo). There are also some rather large-looking worms in the video. Could these worms be heavier, perhaps more difficult for cheap bastards crafty tacticians to knock into the drink with the baseball bat?Worms Revolution is slated for a third quarter release this year on PC and "consoles." If history is anything to go by, a PSN and XBLA release seems likely at the very least.

The PS3 version of Worms: Ultimate Mayhem will finally crawl into the light later this month. Developer Team 17 has announced that the PSN title will be released in North America on Valentine's Day, February 14, just in time to share some annelid warfare with your better half. Europe will see the game arrive on February 15, which gives single people something to look forward to, we guess?Worms: Ultimate Mayhem will be available for $14.99 in North America, £9.99 in the UK and €12.99 in the rest of Europe. PlayStation Plus subscribers will also receive an unspecified "launch discount."

The PC version of Worms Ultimate Mayhem will reach Steam on September 28, a one-week delay from its previous pronouncement of war. Launch dates for operations on the Xbox 360 and PS3 are still to be determined. Along with today's debut delay announcement, Team 17 brought out a new "customization" trailer. The clip features some of the 100 fashion items available for the Worms, and shows off the "weapon factory," which allows players to customize how some items in their arsenal deliver sweet, wormy death. %Gallery-133923%

Worms 2: Armageddon has gotten not one or two but three brand new content packs announced for the game on XBLA and PSN. The "Puzzle Pack" is available today on Xbox Live, and brings 20 new single-player puzzle missions, five new achievements, and some new cosmetic content onto your console for 320 Microsoft Points ($4). Additionally, the PSN version has gained the "Retro Pack," with 20 more single-player missions and new speech banks and other content, and the "Time Attack Pack," with even more race missions to play through. Some of that content was presumably already in the Xbox DLC that arrived last month, so now PSN players can enjoy it as well, at a price of $4.99 each (with extra discounts for PlayStation Plus members). All three packs are available right now, and Team 17 is promising more new content packs to come. You can browse through screenshots of all the new content below. • Worms Crazy Golf coming to PSN, iOS and Steam

Periodically interrupting a formal stroll through the countryside to whack a small ball around just isn't crazy enough. No, golf only crosses the line into demonstrably insane territory when it's played by squeaky-voiced, anthropomorphic annelids. Enter: Worms Crazy Golf. Team 17, the Polyphony Digital of never-ending invertebrate violence, has formally announced Worms Crazy Golf, coming to PlayStation Network, iOS devices and Steam later this year. Packed with 36 courses, outlandish hazards, special ball powers and the franchise's signature elements (worms, yes, but also sheep), it sounds like a hefty update to the older mobile game of the same name. Perhaps it's better to think of it as Super Stickman Golf wrapped in a wriggly brand. As the press release is keen to point out, "it is anything but a straight simulation."%Gallery-130628%

  • Worms Ultimate Mayhem revamps the 3D Worms games this fall

    07.28.2011

Worms Ultimate Mayhem has been officially announced by Team 17 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Revealed by the Australian Classification Board in May, Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a downloadable HD re-vamp and "reimagining" of Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem. The game will include "all of the content" from the original games, along with 60 single-player missions, 12 graphical themes, 38 weapons and full online play for up to four players. Team 17's head designer John Dennis also mentions that they've made improvements suggested by fans of the original games. The voice-acted missions are good and fine, but the "vastly improved camera functionality" is what could finally convert the hate directed at the 3D installments of the series into wriggly worm love.%Gallery-129381%

  • Worms Crazy Golf rating squirms out of ESRB

    06.20.2011

Worms Crazy Golf was rated by the German USK during the madness of E3, and then by the ESRB for PC and PlayStation 3. Originally made for Java phones several years ago, Worms Crazy Golf is hopefully getting a massive graphics and gameplay overhaul by Team 17 before it winds up on high-definition systems. It appears Team 17 is hitting the Worms well hard again, having recently submitted Worms: Ultimate Mayhem to the Australian Classification Board as well. Now we play the waiting game to see when these unannounced invertebrate titles become "official."

Worms 2: Armageddon for iOS devices will be $1 for a "limited time." The "Battle Pack," an in-app expansion, which adds more weapons and a new single-player campaign, has also been reduced to $1. The game and add-on are normally $5 and $2, respectively. For a bunch of soil-slithering invertebrates, the Worms are sure getting around in the news this week. On Monday, Worms: Ultimate Mayhem was rated by the Australian Classification Board, though no official details have followed yet. %Gallery-107557%

  • 'Worms Ultimate Mayhem' rated in Australia

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski

    05.30.2011

Team 17 has received a rating for Worms: Ultimate Mayhem from the Australian Classification Board. The unannounced invertebrate title will likely be digitally distributed -- like most of Team 17's most recent projects. If the Ultimate Mayhem title is a hint of what to expect from this game, then it would be fair to guess it's based on Worms 4: Mayhem. Meaning Worms: Ultimate Mayhem could be the first 3D Worms game for HD consoles. A new 3D installment of Worms certainly comes with risk, as the 3D iterations of Worms were never as well-received as their 2D counterparts.

After two decades at the helm of annelid annihilators Team17, Martyn Brown has left the Worms developer to work as an independent video game consultant, according to a post on his (private) Facebook page, as noted by Eurogamer. Brown co-founded Team17, which got its start developing games for the Amiga (before your time?). "I had an amazing 20-year ride and whilst it's the end of a truly enjoyable period of my life, it equally signals the start of a really exciting new one," Brown posted before swinging away on a grappling hook, throwing a grenade, falling on that grenade and blowing himself up.

Anxious to bolster your crawling army's cache of weaponry in Worms 2: Armageddon? Starting today, attempted wormicide just got a bit more interesting through the release of the "Battle Pack" DLC, which adds a new single-player campaign of 30 new deathmatches, more customization options, new game modes such as "Warzone," "Forts Pro" on iOS and the survival variant "Bodycount" on PS3, a slew of new awards and Trophies and, of course, new weapons, which include "termites, ferrets and worship statues." Sorry, European PS3 users -- you've got to wait until tomorrow before you can access the new content. The DLC will set worm wranglers back $1.99 on iOS devices, while the PS3 booster shot will cost a bit more at $4.99 (€3.99 in Europe). Feel free to check out some screens of the new content in our galleries below, if you want. It's not like you have a worm with a shotgun pointing at your back or anything if you don't. Oh, by the way, don't turn around! %Gallery-107557% %Gallery-107558%
