You can cite bombastic graphics or Bandai Namco's fluid take on 3D, hand-to-hand combat, but let's be honest: People have been playing Tekken for two decades because you just won't see an alcoholic Mexican priest turned jaguar-faced luchador powerbomb a genetically-engineered velociraptor in other fighting games. Today marks the debut of the Evo 2014 fighting game tournament in Las Vegas, but those who didn't book airfare to the City of Sin won't be entirely left out thanks to a bevy of broadcast streams covering all the virtual fisticuffs. Eight top fighting games are officially represented at Evo 2014: Ultra Street Fighter 4, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, The King of Fighters 13 and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Capcom's official "Capcom Fighters" stream on Twitch has you covered for all the Ultra Street Fighter 4 matches, while Shoryuken offers two streams to cover the remaining games: SRKEvo1 and the similarly-titled SRKEvo2. The official Twitch streaming schedule offers a full rundown of what games will be shown. Today is a dominated by Ultra Street Fighter 4, Tekken and Injustice, but tomorrow features the more esoteric King of Fighters, Killer Instinct and BlazBlue tournaments. [Image: Capcom]

EVO fighting game tournament founder Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar appeared on a recent episode of iPlayWinner's The Fray, where he revealed that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 would appear at this year's tournament. As we reported in September, EVO 2014 is slated to take place in Las Vegas from July 11 to July 13. As with last year, EVO 2014 will be streamed via Twitch. Though it's not terribly surprising to see the fan-favorite Tekken Tag Tournament 2 join the tournament roster, it's far from the only draw at EVO 2014. Other games appearing at the event include Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters 13 and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. Alongside the addition of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Cuellar also revealed that publisher Bandai Namco has signed on as a sponsor for EVO 2014. [Image: Bandai Namco]

Yesterday we brought you word of a live-action Tekken prequel dubbed Tekken - A Man Called X. Today we've learned that no such film exists. Reports of the film initially stemmed from actor Kane Kosugi. Reportedly, Kosugi was to star in the movie which would have been directed by famed Thai martial arts auteur Prachya Pinkaew. This morning however, a notice appeared on Kosugi's personal site, apologizing for yesterday's announcement and clarifying that Kosugi is instead slated to star in a film provisionally titled "Agent X." Though not explicitly stated, it appears that this new project has no relation to Namco Bandai's 3D fighting game franchise - or, if it does, nobody bothered to inform long-time Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada who has been shooting down reports of the film on Twitter. Kosugi's site "deeply" apologizes for the inconvenience.

Crystal Sky Pictures is once again hoping to bring Tekken to the silver screen with a live-action prequel dubbed Tekken - A Man Called X. According to a Cinema Today report (translated by Kotaku), this new film will be directed by Prachya Pinkaew and star Kane Kosugi. Pinkaew is the auteur responsible for Ong-Bak and Tom Yum Goong, two of the finest Thai martial arts films in recent memory. Kosugi, in turn, is the son of legendary martial artist and actor Sho Kosugi. Tekken - A Man Called X will be Kosugi's first starring role in a Hollywood film, though he's been punching and kicking people in action movies since childhood. There's currently no word on when Tekken - A Man Called X will debut, but filming is scheduled to begin soon. Update: Kane Kosugi's site has retracted the announcement of Tekken - A Man Called X.

Namco Bandai's fruitful fiscal year continued with nine-month net profits of just under ¥28 billion, which converts to around $300 million. That represents year-on-year growth of 71.7 percent, while net revenue rose by 8.4 percent to ¥351 billion, or $3.78 billion. While other companies are slashing their end-of-fiscal-year net profit forecasts, Namco adjusted its forecast up by 6.5 percent to ¥24.5 billion, around $264 million. In terms of games, 1.35 million worldwide sales of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 contributed a fair amount to those figures. Namco also sold 870,000 copies of Soulcalibur 5 across the nine months, taking its total to a healthy 1.56 million, as well as 660,000 of Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations and 500,000 of Tales of Xillia 2, released exclusively in Japan on PS3 back in November.Xillia 2 was Namco's second highest-selling game in Japan last year behind One Piece: Pirate Warriors, but we'll likely have to wait a good long while to play it if does get Western localization, given that the original Xillia is only set to arrive here later this year.

When it's time for the year's Evolution Championship Series fighting game selections to be announced, normally the process shakes out like this: A post goes up on Shoryuken, the fighting game community cheers and/or jeers for a while, and then everyone gets back to practicing. This year, however, things are a bit different.Seven games have been announced as official selections, as per usual: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter X Tekken (ver. 2013), King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena. The eighth game shakes up some paradigms, being selected through an ongoing charity fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.Basically, players donate money to the BCRF in the name of whichever game they want to see in the final slot, be it Dead or Alive 5, Darkstalkers 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or any of the 13 other eligible titles. Whichever game's community raises the most money for charity before the end of this month will be selected as the final, official EVO 2013 selection.Donation links can be found here, so if you want to forcefully subject people to a global MLP: Fighting Is Magic tournament, you can do so for a good cause.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition offers some weird new features that aren't in the other versions. One of the additions that is, unquestionably, an improvement: there's no Online Pass. Siliconera originally noted the lack of an Online Pass for the Wii U game, and we've verified (it's as simple as looking in the box, really).TTT2 on PS3 and Xbox 360 required a pass for online multiplayer. On the Wii U, there's no barrier between you and Tekken Ball except, well, a software update that begins downloading when you put the game in the system for the first time.

Kids these days (with their skinny pants and their Beibers and their Twitter accounts) probably aren't familiar with the concept of "Tekken Ball." The PlayStation version of Tekken 3 hit living rooms a little over 14 years ago, after all, and aside from including the best unlockable character in any fighting game ever, it also introduced a generation to the magic of punching a giant iron ball at a dinosaur. Since Tekken Ball is returning in Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition, Namco Bandai has put out a video (above) explaining the mode so all y'all whipper-snappers won't be at such a horrendous disadvantage. We promise to go easy on you, at least for the first couple of rounds.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be available digitally through the European PlayStation Network next Wednesday, November 21, thus fulfilling a need for PS3 owners on the not-America side of the planet who require both game-purchasing convenience and a bear with which to punch a dinosaur. Similarly, the game will also be available on Xbox Live Games on Demand sometime in late December.A digital version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition will be making its way to the Wii U eShop at some point during the new console's "launch window," which Nintendo has said will last until March of next year. If you do plan on downloading TTT2WUE, though, make sure to buy an external storage device of some kind. As we learned last month, the game won't even fit in the basic model's built-in memory.

Back in September some dataminers found six hidden characters on Xbox 360 discs of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and Namco Bandai promised they would be released from their coded prisons, for free, in due time. Tonight, the final three of these characters are liberated – Dr. Boskonovitch, Unknown and Violet – along with former pre-order characters Ancient Ogre, Angel, Michelle Chang and Kunimitsu. All seven characters are free.Dr. B was last playable in Tekken 3, Unknown was in Tekken Tag Tournament, and Violet was last in Tekken 4. On October 9, Namco launched the first round of free bonus characters, including Miharu, Sebastian, and "Slim" Bob.Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be available as a downloadable game on PSN starting Tuesday, November 13, for $50.

Namco Bandai showed almost universal growth in the first half of its fiscal 2013 (ending in September), with operating income for the full company at ¥27.75 billion ($345.88 million), up 176 percent from last year. Specifically for the Content Business, which includes game software, operating income rocketed up 375 percent to ¥20.136 billion. The best-selling titles of the year included Tekken Tag Tournament 2 at 840,000 units in Japan and Europe (it was not yet out in North America as of the end of the period), Soulcalibur 5 at 680,000 – it's sold 1.38 million overall, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations at 550,000, Taiko Drum Master 3DS at 270,000 in Japan only – it would be more if you released it worldwide, Namco, just saying – and SD Gundam G Generation Over World on PSP at 260,000.

  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2's Saudi Arabia stage changing to remove accidental usage of 'Allah'

You'd think that Tekken Tag Tournament 2's dancer-filled Snoop Dogg stage would be the most controversial arena of the lot, but the game's "Saudi Arabia" stage has created a stir of its own through usage of imagery that may be offensive to Muslims. The issue stems from the level's floor texture; a pattern of repeating stars that each contain the Arabic script for "Allah." This design element was a complete accident, according to TTT2 producer Katsuhiro Harada. "We didn't know that," Harada tweeted in response to players that informed him of the script's meaning. "We will change stage design data as soon as possible. We couldn't read that."No further specifics were given vis-a-vis when or how the update will be made available, or what the pattern will be replaced with. Personally, we're hoping for more Snoop.

It's a good thing the Wii U supports external USB hard drives, because downloading Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will eat up half of a Premium's onboard storage, and will be impossible on the stock Basic model. The downloadable version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will take up 16.7 GB of space, Namco Bandai revealed. It's currently unclear how much of that storage is reserved for Star Fox costumes. The eShop version will also be cheaper in Japan: ¥6,280 ($79) versus ¥6,980 in stores. This differs from the 3DS eShop, where games are priced similarly to their retail versions; Nintendo of America hasn't announced any pricing details for the Wii U eShop.

  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition features Nintendo-themed 'Mushroom Battle' mode

    09.22.2012

During a private pre-Tokyo Game Show event held at Namco Bandai's massive headquarters in the Shinagawa ward of Tokyo, we had a chance to experience a guided tour of the special (and fittingly bizarre) exclusive features coming to Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition.Though there are some ancillary new features that take advantage of the Wii U's hardware, the real meat of Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition's console-specific feature set is its "Mushroom Battle" mode, which incorporates power-ups and music from classic Nintendo games into standard Tekken matches. Mega Mushrooms, Poison Mushrooms and other classics litter the floor of a standard match, each performing their expected function when walked on by a character. The results are, predictably, completely hilarious and wacky.Absorbing mushrooms (or other power-ups like Invincibility Stars) changes the dynamic of the match, as larger characters do more damage and smaller characters move more quickly, for instance. We asked Harada if balance was a consideration while designing Mushroom Battle mode, and he told us that breaking the traditional conventions of Tekken is what makes the mode so entertaining. At present, it is unknown whether the mode will be online-enabled - in fact, Harada was unable to answer any questions regarding the Wii U's online infrastructure - but we're sure to learn more over the coming months.

  • Touchscreen controls coming to Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition

One of many Wii U port inevitabilities will be coming to the new console's version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Touchscreen controls. Specifically, the WiiPad's screen can be used to map out custom shortcuts to specific abilities, which can then be tapped in succession to perform combos.Series producer Katsuhiro Harada demonstrated the feature during a pre-Tokyo Game Show event at Namco Bandai's headquarters in Shinagawa, Tokyo, wherein banks of on-screen buttons were pressed to activate moves that would normally require directional inputs and/or simultaneous button presses. If this sounds at all familiar, its because a similar system was implemented in Dead or Alive Dimensions on the 3DS, though from everything we saw it did not appear as though TTT2's shortcuts can be used to perform entire combos with one button press, as is possible in DOAD.We asked Harada if WiiPad shortcuts will be available for use while fighting online, and he said that he wants that to be the case. He made it a point to mention, however, that some moves (such as the Electric Wind Godfist) will not be executable as shortcuts, and that a classically-skilled player will still have the advantage.
