Attendees of the recent MLG Dallas championship got to see a brief tech demo for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- now, absentees can do so as well by watching the video below. Anyone else think bear hugging a dude so your buddy can deliver a flying kick to his head should be, like, against the rules?

  • Interview: Katsuhiro Harada talks Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Just minutes ago, immediately following the Tougeki fighting game championship finals held during the Tokyo Game Show, Namco Bandai game director Katsuhiro Harada announced Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the first iteration in the Tekken Tag series since the 1999 debut over a decade ago. We had a chance to speak with Mr. Harada following this unveiling, and learned more about the long delay, the game's arcade destination, the current state of fighting games and what's going on with Tekken X Street Fighter. Joystiq: How long have you been working on Tekken Tag Tournament 2? Katsuhiro Harada: Actually there was some talk at first of doing this before Tekken 6 came out, but when we discussed it amongst ourselves and the team we felt like we first wanted to make a proper sequel to 6 to see how far we could push the limits of our graphics engine on that hardware before going to Tag. As you've seen for yourself in the trailer, we have three or four characters on the screen at once so that's simply twice as much power needed than previously for example in Tekken 6. So obviously trying to do that right off the bat earlier on would be much more difficult. If it's running on the same technology as 6, which came not only to arcades but to consoles, what are your console plans for Tag 2?

Attendees of the Tougeki fighting game tournament in Japan received a special surprise today. Namco Bandai unveiled a brand new Tekken game for Japanese arcades. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a follow-up to 1999's arcade original, updated with a new roster and a current-gen graphics engine. Neither a US nor console release have been announced at the time, but we're certain they're in the works. Even the debut trailer (after the break) states that "other region release dates are TBD." %Gallery-102650%

Anchor Bay Films has acquired the distribution rights to Tekken (the movie), a live-action adaptation of Namco Bandai's fighting game franchise. Produced by Crystal Sky Pictures, the film is expected to be released "widely" in the United States next year, reports ComingSoon.net. (The movie premiered in Japan this past March, courtesy of Warner Bros.) "The Tekken video game franchise has sold millions of copies over the past decade," said Anchor Bay president Bill Clark. "Crystal Sky has invested millions in the production, making sure they were able to convey not only the incredible fight scenes, but also the emotional journey of the main character, Jin" (as seen above). The movie has grossed just over a half million dollars to date, according to Box Office Mojo.%Gallery-85755%

  • New Street Fighter X Tekken screens, Street Fighter producer taunts

For most of us, recent tweets from Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono have been good news, because they feature new screenshots of Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken. All of these screens, depicting the same four characters we've seen in other Street Fighter X Tekken media, curiously seem to show the Tekken characters being beaten up by Ryu and Chun-Li. Ono also tweeted an "invitation" to a GamesCom presentation during which he and Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada will both appear and show off the game. Which brings us to the one person for whom these tweets aren't great news. Ono entreated fans to "gather with me to rid of Harada's annoying beard off his baby face once and for all."%Gallery-99368%

  • Street Fighter X Tekken (and vice versa) revealed at Comic-Con

According to Event Hubs, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono recently dropped a fairly sizable bomb on attendees of the company's "Street Fighter Mania!: SSFIV and Beyond" panel at Comic-Con: Street Fighter X Tekken. The oft-rumored project will be developed by Capcom using the Street Fighter IV engine (only with two-fighter tag team battles), and will feature a number of fighters from Namco's similarly successful fighting franchise, including Kazuya and Nina Williams. But that's not all! Ono also revealed that Namco Bandai would be developing Tekken X Street Fighter, which will be developed in-house at Tekken, and spearheaded by long-time franchise producer Katsuhiro Harada. Both titles will be released for 360 and PS3, though according to a cheeky slide at the end of the presentation, the current release window is "not for a while!" Update: Now with video!

  • April Fools: Virtua Fighter parodies Street Fighter/Tekken

Have you ever pondered what it would be like to blend Sega's super technical Virtua Fighter series with Street Fighter or Tekken? Well, ponder no more, as Sega has provided us with an answer. The end result would look something like the video embedded after the break, in which the company unveils the super fictional fighter, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. The simple, precise combos of the series have gone out the window, replaced with massive damage, fireballs and even Ultra Combo finishers. Alas, as fun (blasphemous?) as it looks, it's only an April Fools' joke (for now). Which reminds us: You're going to see a lot of April Fools' jokes in the next 24 to 48 hours. We'll do our best to catalogue them here on Joystiq. [Via @jaredr]

  • Tekken bound for the iPhone

Namco is bringing the popular Tekken franchise to the iPhone. It's not confirmed whether it's a port of the original game -- released back in 1994 in arcades, then on the PlayStation -- or the current Tekken 6. This comes a few weeks after Capcom announced the release of Street Fighter IV for the iPhone, leading to an eventual fighter game showdown in the App Store. While both games on the iPhone is pretty awesome, I'm waiting to see how they will look and play on the iPad. I also wouldn't mind seeing even more Namco titles on the iPhone - especially selections from the Tales RPG franchise. Namco has a number of games in the store, including classics like Galaga, which was "remixed" for the iPhone, Burger Time Deluxe, which graced arcades way back in 1982! Here's hoping for old-school Tekken. [Via Gizmodo]

Tekken 6 for PSP Street Fighter IV isn't the only fighting game to be shoehorned awkwardly into the iPhone. According to Pocket Gamer, an anonymous Namco staffer has confirmed that a Tekken game is on the way to the platform -- a platform that, we feel we should remind you, lacks not only a high-quality arcade-style joystick, but any mechanical controls at all. Last year, Namco's Jonathan Kromrey mentioned that the company was considering porting its fighting games onto the iPhone, and it would appear that nobody successfully dissuaded the publisher. No details were given about the game, except that its development is near completion. We'd say Soul Calibur is next on the list, but Gameloft kind of already did that.

Be assured, this ain't no fan-made hullabaloo -- we can clearly see someone spent at least a couple hundred bucks making this thing. The film hits Japanese viewers on March 20 and presumably arrives on US shores in the not too distant future. But for now, why not get started on piecing together your Eddy cosplay? • Police suspect suicide in death of Japanese voice actor

Japanese voice actor Daisuke Gōri (real name: Yoshio Nagahori) passed away under somewhat bizarre circumstances in Tokyo this weekend -- he was found lying on his stomach in the streets of Nakano ward, bleeding from the wrist, with both a sharp weapon and his will lying nearby. Police are investigating the death as a suicide, though they haven't confirmed that ruling yet. Gōri had an extensive resume as a voice actor in both animation and video games, and is probably known best as the Japanese voices for both Tekken's Heihachi Mishima and Dead or Alive's Bass Armstrong. In Japan, he was renowned for doing voices for the Dragon Ball Z and Kinnikuman series. He was 57. [Via Kotaku]

We live in a world that's so full of daily tragedy and unpredictable horror that when something happens exactly the way we thought it would, we find reason to celebrate. Even if it's a bad thing, it's an inspiring reminder that even in a universe of chaos there are beautiful, comforting pockets of stability. There's a trailer for the live action Tekken movie after the break, and it does not in any way look like a good movie. Now, hit your knees and thank the stars.

  • Tekken 6 patch adding online co-op to Scenario Campaign

Good news if you're sick of playing Tekken 6 online purely for the purpose of beating up on your friends -- come January 18, you can beat up on computer-controlled opponents together instead, thanks to an incoming patch. The title update for PS3 and Xbox 360 will add online co-op to the Scenario Campaign of the game, along with voice chat. (You know, for working out those incredibly deep strategies -- "I'll punch the guy on the left!") Mokujin's AI has also been tweaked for online versus play, causing his fighting style to change every round. He won't voice chat with you, though. Sorry.

Not much to say here other than there's a PlayStation emulator for the HD2 and it bloody well works! The original gangster of consoles, already emulated on other WinMo devices such as Toshiba's TG01, has made its way to HTC's finest thanks to version 0.10 of the First PlayStation Emulator for Windows CE. You can hit the read link to find out how to get it up and running on your own handset, and then we'll naturally expect you to come back and tell us how good it felt to play Final Fantasy VII in a whole new way. The more impatient among you will already be watching video of the HD2 running Tekken 3 effortlessly after the break, so go join 'em already.

  • Tekken movie poster teased on official Japanese site

Film blog Twitch has spotted the teaser poster for the upcoming Tekken movie on the official Warner Bros. Japan site for the film. We don't want to be overly cynical, but we've had our hearts broken so many times before that it's hard to get excited for any video game-based films -- no matter how spot-on Wushu martial artist Jon Foo looks as Tekken's Jin Kazama. You know what else we're not fans of? The complete lack of Panda in the teaser poster (check it out after the break). We don't care if the character doesn't appear in the series until the third game, if we don't see an upright Panda punching someone in the face, there's no telling how upset we'll be. [Via Kotaku]

Have you been hoping, nay, dreaming of snagging one of the Tekken 6 arcade stick bundles but have been hesitant to plunk down the $150 asking price? This post is for you then, as Amazon has positively slashed the price of the bundle on both PS3 and 360 version, knocking them down to a paltry $78. Seventy-eight bones! That's only $18 bucks more than your average game and it includes the Tekken 6 Hori arcade stick to boot. If you, or the digital pugilist in your life, haven't picked this up yet, it probably won't get much cheaper than this. [Via Dealzon]

A free update, launching on November 26, hopes to end the woes Tekken 6 players have encountered in the online King of Iron Fists Tournament. The update should improve connectivity between players and will add selectable search priorities for ranked matches. Namco also aims to improve the responsiveness of button input and will add a cancel option for the first few seconds of a match should you disapprove of your opponent's signal strength. Or, in our case, should you find they're using a super cheap character like Devil Jin. Stop it!

Those of you taking your King of the Iron Fist Tournament fighters to the internet have been experiencing some major issues, notably: when trying to compete online in any sort of meaningful way, you're met with acute, game-ending connectivity issues. Namco recognized that today and issued a response, stating, "To improve the online game experience for players ... Namco Bandai games is developing a downloadable update which will be available as soon as it has passed rigorous testing procedures." Unfortunately, no date for the patch has been given, though the publisher does add, "This is separate from the online co-op Scenario Campaign mode update." We've pestered Namco for more details on exactly what the patch will aim to fix and when we might hear more about it but, until that time, know this: something is being fixed at some point.

  • Rumor: Tekken 6 PSP adds Story modes for Lars and Alisa

There may be extra incentive to check out the PSP version of Tekken 6, as Siliconera reports the handheld port will feature story modes for newcomers Lars and Alisa. The news originally fought its way onto the net via online retailer Rakuten, but the page has since been pulled, with no new listing surfacing. The PSP port will also apparently replace the console version's Scenario Mode with Gold Rush Mode, where each fight earns the player money to customize their character. Many of you may have noticed the game failed to meet its October 27 release date, just as we thought it would -- several retailers now peg down the US release for November 29, while it looks like Japan will have to wait until January 14, 2010.
