  • Runes of Magic goes tower defense

Now here's something you don't see everyday in your MMO -- tower defense. Runes of Magic's newest PvP arena, Visdun Fortress, is a tower defense battle between two teams of three players. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of tower defense, the objective is simple -- use stationary towers to defend your side of the board to make sure no monsters come in and reach your base. Towers can be usually made in different flavors, such as ice towers to slow down monsters, fire towers to damage monsters and burn them over time, etc. Towers can also be upgraded as the game progresses, as defeating monsters yields points you can spend on more towers or tower upgrades.

  • New Runes of Magic area "Autolia Volcano" to melt faces this month

Runewalker Entertainment and Frogster Interactive have put word out that a new area is coming to Runes of Magic at the end of September. The "Autolia Volcano" is actually part of the Chapter II: The Elven Prophecy expansion that was just released under a week ago, and will be another high-level region for players to progress after the Savage Lands on their journey to the new level cap of 55. And yes, the graphic above does appear to have a spelling error (it's spelled "Volcano" every time in the news article). The Naga race call the volcano home, so be prepared to engage these scaly foes if you choose to visit. Right at the foot of the volcano is the sprawling Naga city -- perhaps not the smartest place to build, but it doesn't sound like they had much choice after getting their scaly tails kicked in the Great War.Ahead of the zone being released, there are a couple of ways you can get a small taste of what's coming. An article on the Runes of Magic website has two pages worth of detailed lore about the area, its points of interest and its inhabitants to read through. For those who aren't into the whole reading thing, we've got a trailer just past the break that you can watch instead.

The Runes of Magic community has been waiting a long time, and now, Chapter II: The Elven Prophecy has arrived! With new raids for the community to enjoy; new elven characters; new Druid and Warden classes; and a few different contests to participate in, you'd think that Frogster Interactive and Runewaker Entertainment would have more than enough to celebrate! Well, it turns out that not only have they managed to release a huge new chunk of content extremely smoothly, they've also managed to attract 1.9 million players to their game since the initial launch a scant six months ago. With the continual focus on improvements, the gifts to the player-base in the form of the occasional diamonds, armor sets, and the like, we're not too surprised. Runes of Magic is a F2P that seems determined to make their mark. With an expansion, almost 2 million players, and a bunch of free fun for their player-base, we're curious to see how the next 6 months go for them. In the meantime, we'll be in Taborea, leveling our Druids and Wardens. Gallery: Runes of Magic: The Elven Prophecy Gallery: Runes of Magic: The Weeping Coast

The popular free-to-play MMO Runes of Magic has given its players a steady trickle of content updates since the game launched. We've mentioned that Chapter II: The Elven Prophecy will release on September 15th, and the game's developer Frogster has announced a new high level dungeon instance for this update called "The Origin". Players will team up with elemental beings and guardian Ents to take on mutant beetles and bloodworms. There will be four bosses that players need to defeat, and the release from Frogster gives a bit of a spoiler about The Origin: "An opponent who was already believed to have been beaten returns to the fray." Frogster also states they'll continue to add new instances after The Origin's introduction to Runes of Magic, ensuring continued challenges for high level players.%Gallery-65922%%Gallery-66860%

Earlier this month, we had a chance to sit down for a developer tour of the new Weeping Coast area in Runes of Magic. The devs at Frogster were kind enough to walk us through the entire area, making sure to point out key spots along the way. Since we are not able to make it out to GamesCom, this exclusive tour served as a way to show us that same content (and more!) being shown at the German convention.Within the Weeping Coast zone itself, set to go live later this month, there will be much more than just a change of scenery. As you'll see from these 17 new images, we are introduced to new creatures, new instances and tons of new quests. So be sure to follow along in our gallery linked below, and check out the brand new GamesCom trailer after the jump for the upcoming Chapter 2, being released in September.%Gallery-66860%

Today, Frogster has revealed more information on the newest area included with their free expansion for Runes of Magic coming later this year. The Elven Prophecy arrives this September with much more content, including an entire new race and storyline for the Elves. Of course, with a new race comes a whole new land.To the north lies The Weeping Coast (coming in August), which we've already heard much about, but there are also the areas of Savage Lands, the Elven Island and Aotulia Volcano. While the Savage Lands and the Elven Island are home to the Elves, the Aotulia Volcano is a harsh ash-filled land which is home to a giant volcano that has been spewing lava for 150 years. It is also referred to as the Claw of the Demon Dragon, which hints at a secret lying deep inside the volcano. We've told you all about the next patch -- entitled The Elven Prophecy -- for Runes of Magic and, in advance of the launch in September, Frogster have introduced two new Elven classes: the Druid and the Warden. Both classes are rooted deeply in nature, with their abilities tied to the world itself and each have their place within the world and lore of Runes of Magic.Essentially Elven priests, Druids have similar abilities to a mage and are able to channel the gifts of nature in battle or to heal their allies. Wardens meanwhile, are the peacekeepers of Elven society and the land who exist in an almost symbiotic state with the flora of the Elves' homeland. In times of war, they are skilled at close combat. Frogster have updated The Elven Prophecy site with some suitably Elven artwork and information on both classes. You can also take a peek at our gallery to see what the new patch is going to look like. %Gallery-65922%

Runas de Magica y el pollo es muy delicioso para la cena! Ok, so our Spanish is a little rusty, we're missing some accent marks, and we probably just said that Runes of Magic tastes good with chicken, but what we mean to say is that the closed beta for Runes of Magic in Spain and France has begun. Now anyone from those two countries, or anyone who wants to have their client in French or Spanish, can enjoy Runes of Magic in those languages. With the closed beta comes the launch of the French and Spanish Runes of Magic websites as well, so feel free to scurry on over and register. The final date for launch for these two countries hasn't been confirmed yet, but the game will be shipping out with The Elven Prophecy, giving their launches a timeframe of either launching with the new expansion or shortly thereafter.

  • Runes of Magic drops more info about Elves as a playable race

    06.14.2009

Runes of Magic is the game some view as a free-to-play successor to World of Warcraft. Our own Krystalle Voecks gave us a preview of what's to come in RoM from E3 2009 but Frogster has released a little more info about the next major patch, Chapter II - The Elven Prophecy. Frogster states: "In the upcoming 'Chapter II - The Elven Prophecy', the name giving elven will find their way into the game world Taborea. A widely branching background story entwines about the fairylike race with many new challenges that are going to be told in lots of new quests and new quest lines. Thus, 'Chapter II - The Elven Prophecy' will lead players into new game regions characterized by elven lore like an elven island at the shore of Ravenfell."Frogster really seems to be on a roll the release of content updates on a regular basis since launch; Return to the Ice Dwarf Kingdom (Patch 1.7) dropped earlier this month, bringing guild castles, permanent pets, and high level content with it. Chapter II - The Elven Prophecy will be released in September 2009. For a first glimpse at screens and concept art for The Elven Prophecy, check out our gallery after the jump.

We had the chance to sit down and catch up with the guys from Frogster Interactive as well as a few of the Runewaker Entertainment developers at E3. While we knew Elves were coming to Runes of Magic, we didn't have too many details of just precisely how they'd be implemented into the game. As part of our talk, they let me check out the never-before-seen area that the elves will be a part of, as well as showing off some of the new instance content and guild buildings that they're adding to the game. This next chapter - The Elven Prophecy - will give players the option of playing the elven race (surprise) which starts out in a strange and wonderous new area. Beyond that, they're also working on PvP arenas, destructible guild buildings, and some new epic powers. Along with this sweeping update, the game is being updated with several graphic improvements including updates to things like water, and adding in some incidental sounds and music to start to help close the gap in regards to the dearth of sound issue many have decried Runes of Magic for. If you'd like a preview into some of these areas, be sure to check the gallery below, as well as the newly-released trailer showing off the Elven Prophecy, coming to Runes of Magic this September!%Gallery-65389% Massively was on the ground in Los Angeles last week and covering all the latest E3 MMO news coming from the convention.
