So you've got a few days off, and you're probably trapped with family to boot -- this calls for some serious binge-watching. Now is the perfect time to catch up on all of those movies and shows you couldn't make time for during the year. To help guide you through the plethora of options, we've compiled a list of the best stuff with a geeky bent you just have to watch. We've avoided some of the more well-known choices (but seriously, Interstellar is worth a shot while it's in theaters), and have instead focused on bringing to light some more obscure choices. They're not all family-friendly, but they're all worth your time.

  • Joystiq Weekly: Titanfall gets co-op, Civ: Beyond Earth review, amiibo impressions and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. With Titanfall getting a co-operative, wave-based mode, Super Smash Bros. on Wii U ushering in eight fighters at once and Halo: The Master Chief Collection just a few weeks (and a ~20GB patch) away, we're ready to spend a substantial amount of time beside our friends. Cunning AI is great and all, but what beats teaming up with or taking down local, equally-frantic friends and rivals? Other than wish-granting sacks of money, we mean. Single player diehards certainly aren't left out of this week's best content though – Rockstar launched a super-cheap, upgraded version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the Xbox Marketplace today, there are reviews for Civilization: Beyond Earth and The Legend of Korra, and we got our hands on amiibos and Sony's horror romp, Until Dawn. All of that and quite a bit more is waiting for you after the break!

  • The Legend of Korra review: Bend it like Bayonetta

Bending the elements like folks do in The Legend of Korra is an intoxicating dream. Much as they did in the original Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon, many people born in Korra's world can freely manipulate the four elements through martial arts. The Avatar, born into every generation to maintain the spiritual balance of the world Dalai Lama style, is the only one who can bend all four. Fire from your fingers, literally riding the wind, lifting up the earth to make an easy chair, and never needing a squirt gun; the promise of feeling unity with the physical world, even if you're just playing around, is mesmerizing. Who wouldn't want to do that? That Platinum Games captures even a little of that feeling in its video game adaptation of The Legend of Korra is impressive, but physical fantasy is only one piece of the show's winning formula. Platinum's made a fun, flighty, sometimes infuriatingly pedantic game that's admirably old fashioned but disappointingly limited. The Legend of Korra is a strong body missing most of its heart. The Legend of Korra has a special difficulty level tuned for fans of Platinum Games – Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance – producer Atsushi Kurooka says in the latest behind-the-scenes video. Activision approached Platinum to do The Legend of Korra, and the show's depth and silky smooth fight scenes convinced Kurooka it was "worth the challenge," as he puts it. And the final boss fight? It "has Platinum Games written all over it." The video shows off a few cool fight scenes between the talking heads, too. The Legend of Korra is due out on October 21 on PS3, PS4 and PC, and on October 22 on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. [Image: Activision]

We once lived in a world without hope of a Legend of Korra video game. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked Platinum Games announced that they would develop a game based on Nickelodeon's animated adventure series. IGN has the first gameplay footage from the upcoming project, which shows Korra using the elements to dispatch her foes. Of course, if throwing water, earth, wind and fire at your opponents isn't quite exciting enough for you, it looks like you'll also get a chance to ride Korra's polar bear dog, Naga. The demo shown is running on PlayStation 4, though the final game will be available on PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC as well come this fall. [Image: Platinum Games]

  • The Legend of Korra: as told by Bayonetta dev Platinum Games

The Legend of Korra, Nickelodeon's animated successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender, is being turned into a cel-shaded pummelfest by Platinum Games. The announcement comes a few days ahead of the third-season premiere of The Legend of Korra on June 27. Platinum's take on Korra, overseen by show scribe Tim Hedrick and rooted between Book 2 and Book 3 of the show, will be available only for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC this fall. Platinum Games, the Japanese studio behind The Wonderful 101, Metal Gear Rising, and Bayonetta (which has itself been adapted into an anime), is hinging its Legend of Korra game on the protagonist's established strengths. Beyond a barrage of swift kicks, punches and counters, Korra can summon fire, wind, water and earth in spirited combat. The game also sees Korra hurtling down the streets of Republic City atop her polar bear-dog, Naga, and fighting in pro-bending tournaments, which are staged arena battles in which elemental users fight one another for territory. Publisher Activision has also announced a different Legend of Korra game for Nintendo 3DS, developed as a strategy role-playing game by Webfoot Technologies.
