The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds draws heavily from the SNES installment in the series, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and designer Eiji Aonuma says we'll see a few returning faces and Link will (re)encounter some familiar foes. In a brief Q&A on Facebook, Aonuma says most enemies are "touched up" versions of their Link to the Past counterparts. "We've recreated a very similar world to that game in 3D so we thought it would be fun if the enemies there fought in the same way as in A Link to the Past. However, since the 3D effect introduces the new concept of height to the gameplay we have changed some attacks so that they take height into account." Aonuma specifically calls out Sahasrahla, the elder of Kakariko Village who guides Link on his quest in A Link to the Past. A Link Between Worlds will also allow players to tackle dungeons in any order, though Aonuma clarifies, "each dungeon features new ideas involving the item you need to use there, so there isn't some kind of process or order you can follow to make it easier." Aonuma adds Mother MaiaMai, a creature that looks like a giant Octorok, will exist between both Hyrule and Lorule – and if Link finds all of her MaiaMai children, he "may learn a little more about her." Finally, Aonuma concludes his post by saying Nintendo has heard the cries for a The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask remake on 3DS. "It's nice to see such a strong response to this title and we haven't forgotten about Link's adventures in that world. If you play A Link Between Worlds, you may better understand what I mean by that."

It's that time of year again, when caveman artifacts paper advertisements are once again relevant to our hyper-connected little corner of the world. Gamestop's Black Friday circular has purportedly leaked, containing within its pages confirmation that Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds-themed 3DS XL bundle will be available in the U.S for $219.99. Considering that the bundle (originally announced only for Europe) is headed to Australia exclusively through EB Games, we see no reason why it shouldn't/couldn't make it here in time for the annual post-Thanksgiving carnival of souls. We've reached out to Nintendo for official confirmation and will update with any new information we can scrounge up.

Nintendo unveiled a stunning limited edition, gold 3DS XL for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds that's confirmed to be coming to Europe on November 22. There's no word yet on it coming to North America, but who'd stop something as utterly gorgeous as this from being in our hands? Only someone terrible, surely. The version coming to Europe comes with a download code for the game, and is priced £200 on Nintendo's web store. Moving onto the game itself, its packaged cover art features a reversible front cover, one side in gold and the other full color. Also, Nintendo recently revealed UK pre-orders come with a miniature treasure chest that, yes, plays that music. The Zelda 3DS XL isn't the only one announced for Europe, because the continent is getting its white-gloved hands on the white Luigi-rific 3DS XL. The polka-Luigi unit came to Japan earlier this year, and it's due now in Europe on November 1, priced £180.

What are Nintendo's Satoru Iwata and Eiji Aonuma looking at in this picture? A baby bird? A wedding ring? No -- it's a unique pre-order item for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS A Link to the Past sequel The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Depending on how big of a Zelda fan you are, the full Vine clip may have you frothing with desire. Wipe away that froth if you're unwilling to pay import fees, though, as this cute little thing is available as an exclusive pre-order bonus in the UK only. It might be worth the extra cost, though, if you're looking to complete a Link cosplay ensemble, or if you just crave the instant validation of da-na-na-naaaaa! at any given moment.

  • Eiji Aonuma discusses hand-holding in Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Zelda series Producer Eiji Aonuma approached development of the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds with unassisted exploration in mind. During an interview with Polygon, he explained that the game won't "completely guide players through the experience" and addressed game developers' general concern for leaving players in the dark. "We kind of have a bad habit of hand-holding, trying to make things easier for everyone," Aonuma said. "More and more, I start to think that that kind of isn't actually that fun." Aonuma shared an example of a three-day feud between himself and his director over the inclusion of a hint in an area of the game, ultimately resulting in its removal. The interview follows news earlier this month that the game will allow players to tackle dungeons in whichever order they prefer. A recent trailer also named the game's alternate universe Lorule and gave us a glimpse of an artistically-inclined antagonist.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds' version of Link transcends dimensional boundaries between Hyrule and Lorule in this new trailer. We also catch a glimpse of an antagonist imprisoning people in paintings using a power similar to Link's new ability to turn into drawings on walls.

Update: The Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation revealed a December 26 release date for A Link Between Worlds in Japan. During the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will arrive on 3DS on November 22 in Europe (also the release date for North America). He also revealed that the game will dramatically alter the traditional Zelda formula, allowing players to tackle dungeons in whatever order they choose. This will be possible thanks to a special shop where Link can rent and purchase items that would normally only be found in dungeons, including series staples like the hookshot, boomerang and hammer. Zelda is one of Nintendo's most entrenched series, so seeing the company make such a large departure is pretty surprising. We'll see if it pays off come November.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Mario Party: Island Tour will both be released for the 3DS on November 22 in North America, Nintendo has announced. Both games will cost an unsurprising $39.99. Mario Party: Island Tour, previously known as simply Mario Party, was originally revealed during a Nintendo Direct last April. The game includes seven boards and Augmented Reality-flavored mini-games. Meanwhile, A Link Between Worlds is set after the events of A Link to the Past, and now Link has the ability to become two-dimensional at advantageous times. Sounds kinda familiar.

A pitch reel from Imagi Animation Studios for a CGI The Legend of Zelda film, proposed in early 2007 and subsequently turned down, has made its way online. It was supervised, shot and edited by animator Adam Holmes, who thankfully posted it to his online portfolio for us all to see – well, not here. Embedding has been disabled on the video. Imagi Animation Studios, formed in 2000, is the outfit that produced TMNT, the studio's first major feature release. Two years later, Imagis followed up TMNT with Astro Boy, which reportedly lost money on its initial $65 million production budget.
