Netflix is no stranger to buying movies originally destined for other studios, but its latest coup is particularly eyebrow-raising. The company has acquired Red Notice, a blockbuster heist thriller that was previously under Universal's wing. It was already set to be a high-profile pic with Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot as its biggest stars, but the switch to Netflix also brings Ryan Reynolds to the cast. It's directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who's best known for working with Johnson on Central Intelligence and Skyscraper.

Sports video games such as EA's Madden and NHL series have held cover athlete votes to determine the athlete gracing the cover of the latest game. 2K Sports took that a step further by announcing a cover art contest for WWE 2K14 today. Fans that enter the contest have a chance to see their entry as an alternate piece of cover art that ships on the inside of the game's case, since The Rock has already been announced as the game's primary cover wrestler. The contest rules also note that the winner will receive a copy of WWE 2K14, and one runner-up will receive a copy of the game as well. Head over to 2K Sports' contest site to download assets for individual wrestlers, as well as those red, fiery background images seen on the covers of 2K Sports games. To enter your custom cover for the game, you'll need to tweet a link to your image with the hashtag #wwe2k14cover.

  • WWE 2K14 taps The Rock for cover spot

Part-time draw The Rock will grace the cover of the latest WWE game, WWE 2K14. Casey Collins, Executive Vice President of Consumer Products, announced the news (via Pasta Padre) prior to this past weekend's Wrestlemania 29 event, where The Rock lost his championship belt against John Cena. Don't worry, we're sure he'll get it back in time to promote the game later this year. The WWE license was held by THQ for years, up until the company's collapse late last year. THQ then proceeded to auction off its assets, with Take-Two securing the WWE license and placing it under its 2K Sports banner. WWE 2K14 is due this fall.Update: We followed up with 2K Sports to confirm what this game is actually called. The original announcement by Take-Two called it "WWE '14," but Joystiq has confirmed with 2K Sports that the game will indeed be called WWE 2K14. All references to the game in this post have been updated with the correct title.

  • The Rock talks Doom again, would do another game movie (like Black Ops)

After watching The Rock, who is also named Dwayne Johnson, fulfill his hosting duties during last night's Wrestlemania event by totally slamming dudes in the face, we were all probably possessed by the same thought: When's Doom 2 coming out? Speaking to MTV, Mr. Rock explained he's not averse to doing another game-based movie "if the right one came along." "I thought we had an opportunity with Doom," he added. "Didn't work out the way we wanted it to, creatively." Let's look on the bright side: Spy Hunter didn't work out the way you wanted it to completely and entirely. When asked what game he'd like to film-ify, in a perfect world, Mr. Rock replied, "Black Ops -- that'd be bad ass. Let's make it happen. Let's do it." He added, "That and Black Swan 2." Wait, wait -- what if we combined the two? Oh, man. Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? Cinematic gold.

  • Gears of War director passing on The Rock due to 'Doom connection'

    by

    07.26.2009

As you may have heard, yesterday's Gearsiverse panel at San Diego Comic Con was light on news regarding the film adaptation of Epic's Gears of War franchise, save for one small detail -- it wouldn't feature Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in any capacity. Director Len Wiseman forthrightly explained why, and in the process, likely hurt the wrestler-turned-actor's (so, basically actor-turned-actor's) feelings -- he told the crowd that "a Doom connection would not be smart for us."We highly doubt that most people immediately associate Mr. Johnson's body of work with that first-person romp/cinematic nightmare -- regardless, Wiseman said he's "looking for an actor for the role and then [I'll] put him into shape." Why waste all that time and effort? Dwayne Johnson is already the only human being on Earth that actually looks like one of the space marines featured in Epic's blockbuster franchise. Scar his face up a bit and you're good to go, man.

Even with all of the excitement occurring at Games Day, Mythic's Paul Barnett and Josh Drescher still had a moment to sit down with us at Massively and talk a little shop about Warhammer's overall status, Mythic's future direction of the game, and why players should come back and experience the Land of the Dead. But they're tricky folks, Paul and Josh! They even tried to turn the interview back around at us at some points! But we stayed strong for you readers, and were able to get some interesting answers out of them regarding Warhammer Online. Also, we have exclusive coverage that Josh indeed loves his fiancee, Aubrey. Yay marriage! Interested in the full interview? Hit that link and read on!

  • The Rock calls Doom movie an 'example of what not to do'

During a rather candid interview in the back seat of a car (we like to imagine they're going to Wendy's for some Frosties), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson spoke his mind regarding the Doom movie and what it takes to turn a game into a film. "We are an example of trying and failing," The Rock said regarding Doom. "It always comes down to good writing and material. We're an example of what not to do." And, of course, no casual interview is complete without a Freudian slip involving the male reproductive organ.

  • New eco ferry uses wind and solar to get you to the Rock -- and hopefully back

    by

Cruising across the open seas may seem like a great way to get close to nature, but take a look at the sheer quantity of fuel most boats suck down as they power through waves (and manatees) and you'll realize the truth. Thus a new breed of eco-friendly boat has arisen, the latest entry being San Francisco's Alcatraz Cruises Hornblower Hybrid ferry. The ship, which will take passengers on trips to the Rock and elsewhere in the Bay, uses two vertical wind turbines and a solar panel to power its on-board electronics, with any excess juice going to the boat's propulsion systems -- which still rely mostly on diesel to get the craft and its passengers where they're going. Okay, so it's perhaps not as green as other eco-boats we've seen, but a tour on this one should be a good bit more affordable when it enters service early this year. [Via Inhabitat]

  • Rumor: Spy Hunter movie hits oil slick, crashes, burns

    by

The Spy Hunter movie based on the Midway arcade hit that we talked about more than a year ago is hitting the skids, crashing through the guardrail, and plummeting off the cliff that is called "development hell" in Hollywood. Looks like director Paul Anderson (W.S., not Thomas) is being taken off the project, which will spin it out into limbo. You can also read Latino Review's review of the script right here. They seemed to like it, saying it was better than The Fast and the Furious 3 ... which ain't saying much. In fact, the best thing Spy Hunter has spawned as far as filmed entertainment goes is the Pontiac commercial above. If any of the game sequels had looked like that, we might still be playing them. Now, we ask you... is this such a bad thing? Sure it had Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson attached to it, and John Woo was supposed to direct it at one point. However, it's had a slew of different writers and now with two director replacements, do we really need a Spy Hunter movie? We hope no one hits "Continue" on the Spy Hunter movie, and that it just dies a merciful death. What say you?

  • Blu-ray movie releases for the week of Jan. 20

This has to be some sort of cruel joke. Two horror movies released this week, but we don't know which one is more scary. On one hand you have a movie about people getting horribly mutilated in various ways and one where The Rock is a star football player with a great single life until one day, his bastard daughter shows up on his front doorstep. Either way, we're pretty sure both movies will be tough to watch for far different reasons. Saw IV: Unrated Director's Cut The Game Plan Perhaps we're being a bit too tough on our good friend Dwayne Johnson. Nevertheless, perhaps he should stick with movies where he can bust in a room, say a couple bad-ass one liners and then proceed to beat the crap outta people with a variety of objects.

  • Select Blu-ray titles offering $10 back if you own DVD version

Another day, another random promotion in the format war. Granted, this particular one isn't exactly a jab against HD DVD, but it could sway some fencesitters to pick up a few Blu-ray titles they wouldn't otherwise add to their collection. Reportedly, the BD versions of The Rock, Crimson Tide and Con Air are all coming with $10 mail-in rebates that are valid if you can prove that you purchased the BD version and standard DVD version of the film. Interestingly, the promotion is good for this entire year, which leads us to believe this trio may just be the beginning of a much larger effort to entice consumers to bite on Blu. If any of you out there spot this offer on a title not listed above, be sure to let us know in comments.[Thanks, Roy A.]

  • LNLBT back in business in Second Life

The story we ran about someone brute-force hacking several Second Life banks has a happy resolution, at least for one of the banks: LNLBT is back in business, and their insurance is back in force with The Rock as well. SL Investor's Bank is still insured, and the other three affected banks were never insured.LNLBT are distributing new ATMs and have new security measures in place - hopefully properly instituted this time. It is nice to see a financial story in Second Life with a happy ending though. Although that article speculated about the possibility of police involvement due to fraud, it appears from an article in the Second Life Herald that WSE may be the first organisation to face legal investigations following the way they handled defaulting on a payment to Midas Bank and then foreclosing on their trading operations, which we reported at the start of the month.

What we're watching: What About Brian gives it another go, with tonight's oddly labeled "premiere" thats actually the second episode. I agree with TV Squad that it is trying to be another Grey's Anatomy but I don't know if viewers will find it as interesting. Hot mid-20's doctors vs.some average looking married guys confused about their lifestyle, you make the choice. We're ok with it as long as it doesn't come on at the same time as 24, because Jack Bauer would kill that Brian guy and then ask his friend's fiancee out for drinks (as long as she's not a terrorist).Since we still don't have an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player yet, we'll probably be watching The Rock at 9 p.m. on HBOOur traditional high-def listings continue below.
