Netflix dominated the list of nominees and, uh, Quibi got 10 nods.
Hulu’s 'The Handmaid's Tale' renewed for a fourth season
Hulu's dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale is one of the service's tentpole original series, and June's harrowing tale is set to continue for at least another year. The Disney-owned platform confirmed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour the show will return for a fourth season.
'Game of Thrones' and Amazon's 'Mrs. Maisel' lead Emmy nominations
The Television Academy has revealed this year's Emmy nominations and to absolutely no one's surprise, Game of Thrones scooped up the most nods with 32, including Outstanding Drama Series and 10 nominees across various acting categories. The show with the second-highest tally of nominations is Amazon Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20. It won several awards last year, including the top Outstanding Comedy Series prize. It's nominated again in that category.
Streaming shows dominate SAG Awards TV nominations
Streaming shows stand a much better chance of winning SAG Awards in 2019 than they did this year -- in fact, they're guaranteed at least one. The Screen Actors Guild has announced its nominees for the 25th annual awards, and streaming productions are thriving in every series-focused (that is, TV-focused) category. Most of those categories have two or more streaming shows in the running, and the "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series" category has nothing but online shows. Voters will have to choose between GLOW, Grace and Frankie and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with Grace and Maisel receiving two nominations each for that award.
Hulu orders revenge drama pilot from 'Handmaid's Tale' producer
It seems Hulu is interested in telling more stories about women with agency. The streaming service has ordered a pilot for a revenge drama from Warren Littlefield, an executive producer of The Handmaid's Tale. Reprisal is about a woman who seeks vengeance against a gang after she was left for dead, according to Deadline. The Littlefield Company and A+E Studios are behind the new show.
Netflix wins a BAFTA, but the BBC’s still king
Britain's Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual celebration of the small screen, and Netflix was expected to win big. The streaming service was in line for six awards, with The Crown and Black Mirror both being nominated for three each. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, and only one of the sextet won a gong on the night: The Crown's Vanessa Kirby, who won best supporting actress.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season two somehow looks darker than the first
The first season of The Handmaid's Tale ended with Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss) leaving the Commander's house, jumping into the back of a van that was headed who knows where. Now we have a look at the second season, which will be going beyond the Margaret Atwood novel the Hulu series is based on. In a new trailer, we see Offred in the back of the van and we hear her ask herself what will happen when she gets out. "There probably is no out," she says. "Gilead is within you."
'The Handmaid's Tale' ventures outside Gilead in second season
The Handmaid's Tale has been a huge success for Hulu, earning the streaming platform quite a few Emmys and two Golden Globes. The first season was based on Margaret Atwood's novel by the same name but many have wondered what's in store for the upcoming second season. "The biggest barrier of season two was season one," showrunner Bruce Miller told Entertainment Weekly. "You sort of intimidate yourself. But at a certain point, you can't spend all your time second-guessing things. Instead, you just have to remember to try and tell a good story." Miller says he and Margaret Atwood began talking about the direction of the second season before the first was completed.
Hulu now boasts 17 million subscribers
Hulu announced today that it ended 2017 with over 17 million subscribers, a whopping 40 percent growth compared to the numbers it released in 2016. That's a pretty big jump and not only did the streaming service close out last year on a high note, it started this year off with two Golden Globes for its original The Handmaid's Tale. The show also helped get Hulu 10 Emmys in September and was one of Hulu's top three watched dramas last year.
Hulu's 'The Handmaid's Tale' wins best TV drama at Golden Globes
Streaming shows are no strangers to picking up Golden Globe awards, and that trend is continuing at the 2018 ceremony. To start, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale has won awards for both the best TV drama and best TV actress (Elisabeth Moss). The wins weren't completely surprising given the strength of Margaret Atwood's story, Moss' performance and the all-too-timely subject matter, but it's still a significant victory.
Netflix leads the streaming pack with nine Golden Globe nominations
Nominations for next month's Golden Globes ceremony were announced this morning and streaming services had a pretty decent showing. Netflix led the pack with nine TV nominations while Amazon and Hulu each received three.
Every ‘Futurama’ episode hits Hulu on October 16th
Starting next week, all 140 episodes and four films of Futurama will be available on Hulu, Variety reports. The streaming service announced in July that it struck a deal with 20th Century Fox to be the exclusive streaming home to Bob's Burgers and would host Fox's slate of animated shows, including Futurama. The show stopped streaming on Netflix entirely at the beginning of July.
Sean Penn will star in Hulu’s upcoming Mars series, 'The First'
In May, Hulu ordered a straight-to-series show called The First. Set in the not too distant future, the series depicts the first human mission to Mars and humankind's first attempts at colonizing another planet. Today, Variety reports that Sean Penn has been signed onto the series.
'The Handmaid's Tale' wins big for Hulu at the Emmy Awards
The Handmaid's Tale continues to be an awards magnet for Hulu. The show won the coveted "Outstanding Drama Series" Emmy Award tonight -- a first for any streaming offering -- following five other major triumphs throughout the ceremony. And that's on top of snapping up three Creative Arts Emmys during a smaller celebration last week. The Handmaid's Tale is Hulu's biggest series yet, and its success shows the value a streaming network can get from producing their own programming. It's no wonder Hulu is planning to spend $2.5 billion on original content this year.
Netflix and Hulu already won 21 Emmys ahead of the main event
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place this weekend and both Netflix and Hulu put on a good showing. Netflix raked in 16 awards while Hulu programming took in five -- a positive preview for how each streaming service will fare during the primetime Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 17th. Overall, Netflix was at the top of the winner's list, coming in second to HBO.
'The Emoji Movie' confirms it's the nightmare we all feared
The Emoji Movie has looked like a potential stain on humanity ever since it was first revealed. We're talking about a Pixels-level disaster, totally lacking in charm and humor and blowing what theoretically could have been an amusing premise for an animated movie. And now, after seeing a particularly insipid tweet from its official account, I'm ready to give the film as many middle-finger emoji as I can fit in my response.
Hulu orders more 'Handmaid's Tale,' nabs 'House of Cards' creator
Hulu's adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale is getting a second season, the streaming service announced this morning. That's not exactly surprising, given the rapturous critical praise for the series. At its Upfront event for advertisers, we also learned that Hulu has brought on Beau Willimon, the creator of Netflix's House of Cards, for The First, a new series about the first manned mission to Mars. We don't know much else about it yet, but it's slated to premiere next year. Together with its new Live TV service, Hulu is giving viewers a lot to get excited about over the next few years.
'The Handmaid's Tale' trailer takes us to a bleak post-America future
Hulu has been teasing its adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale for months now, giving us a peak into a dystopian future Margaret Atwood first imagined in 1985. While those previews definitely gave us a look at the show's visual style, they didn't offer many clues about the plot for anyone who might have missed the novel the first time around. Today, Hulu dropped its first full-length trailer for the series, which debuts next month.
Watch Hulu's first trailer for its take on 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Ever since Hulu announced that it was adapting The Handmaid's Tale, it's been hard not to wonder: would it adequately capture the bleakness of Margaret Atwood's dystopian classic, or do justice to the movie? You now have an inkling of how well it'll work. Hulu has posted its first trailer for its Handmaid's Tale series, and... it's definitely not the feel-good hit of the year. The teaser shows Offred (Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss) grappling with the end of the United States and the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a harsh theocracy where women lose their rights and "handmaids" like Offred only serve as childbearers.
Hulu is adapting Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Taking a cue from Netflix, Hulu isn't slowing down with its original programming. Today, the streaming service announced that it's ordered a full series adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood's seminal sci-fi novel. It centers on a totalitarian society where the birth rate is falling, and fertile women are placed in sexual slavery as "handmaids" to help humanity repopulate. Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, Top of the Lake) will star as Offred, a handmaid working in the home of a government official named The Commander. Her main goal? To find her daughter, all the while trying to deal with her low place in society.
