October was always going to be a packed month for new shows and movies on Netflix, with a litany of horror titles, and returns for Daredevil and Making a Murderer. Among the other Netflix original shows you'll be able to check out are BBC smash hit Bodyguard (October 24th), Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (weekly episodes start October 28th), drag queen reality series Dancing Queen and season two of Big Mouth (both October 5th).

Netflix has certainly touted its Halloween shows before, but this year you may have a particularly good reason to pay attention. The streaming giant has outlined all the horror movies and thrillers you can expect to see in the run-up to October 31st, and the highlight this year might not be one of its originals. You see, The Shining arrives on October 1st -- you now have an easy way to watch Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel. It's a well-worn tale for horror fans, but it could be worthwhile to remind yourself why you shouldn't visit room 237.

Netflix has shown an interest in creating virtual reality content, from releasing a dedicated VR app that creates a screen inside a virtual environment, to experimenting with a virtual video store. Now, Netflix has released its first 360-degree YouTube video that's compatible with 360 VR viewers, like Google Cardboard, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. The clip, which lasts under two minutes, is a recreated scene from Netflix's latest hit, Stranger Things.

  • 'Here They Lie' made a nightmare feel safe on PlayStation VR

The advantage that horror video games have over movies is that you're an active participant in what's happening; you make what happens onscreen that much scarier. But playing these games in virtual reality instead of a 2-D screen is a different proposition: The display is on your face, and in the case of PlayStation VR, costs $400. Ripping the headset off and reflexively throwing it to the ground out of fright is going to be a very expensive mistake. That's why the team at Tangentlemen is taking a different approach for Here They Lie, a psychological thriller drawing from directors Stanley Kubrick and Terry Gilliam, and films like It Follows and Jacob's Ladder for inspiration.

Now die-hard QWERTY enthusiasts never have to be away from the keys. This black leather billfold pledges allegiance to the keys with an embossed replica of a QWERTY keyboard wrapping around its exterior, while its interior rocks the phrase made famous by Jack Nicholson in The Shining: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." It may be a touch less flamboyant than Samuel L. Jackson's "Bad Mother *&%$#@" wallet, but it's no less iconic. You can pick one up now at the source link for £34.99 (about $57) -- unless, of course, you're a Dvorak disciple.

  • The Shining cuckoo clock terrifies on the hour, every hour

We've seen some pretty frightening things come over to the consumer electronics realm in the past, but Chris Dimino's The Shining cuckoo clock is probably the most apt to leave a very unfriendly image burned in your mind. Designed by the same guru who brought us the keyboard waffle iron, this cult classic tells time like your average clock, but as each hour strikes, a demented Jack bursts through the door, proclaims "Here's Johnny!," and grins while Shelly Duvall lets out a piercing scream. Of course, Mr. Dimino would have quite a bit of paperwork to sign with the movie studio if this thing were to ever go on sale, but we're sure there would be quite a line ready to drop unfathomable amounts to put this shocking souvenir in their own Room 237.

Some Thames Valley, UK cops claim it helps reaction times to have their onboard computer yell out Homer's "D'oh!" when it picks up on uninsured drivers, Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny" from The Shining when a stolen car zips by, and Dan Aykroyd's "People like this are a menace to decent society" for crime-linked cars. No word if this newfound reaction time is negated by an ensuing Simpsons-laced quote fest, punctuated with SNL reminiscence.[Via Fark]

What we're watching: While the big networks may not spread around much HD love on the weekends, this is a great Saturday night to stay in (or at least queue a few things up on the DVR). HD Beat reader Randy Perry tipped us off that during HD Net's In the Spotlight: Stanley Kubrick lineup tonight, will be the first time The Shining has been shown in its original aspect ratio (OAR), other than limited showings, since its release in 1980. As if that weren't enough, they will also air A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey which has received rave reviews in high definition. Also on tonight is last year's summer action flick The Island, while the reviews were lukewarm, we're looking forward to checking out the special effects in HD.Our traditional high-def listings continue below.
