  • Around Azeroth: The pinnacle of racing technology

Zephic of Alea Iacta Est guild on Earthen Ring sends in this shot pointing out an interesting feature of the landscape along the Goblin racetrack out in Shimmering Flats. Though it's not entirely clear in the smaller image above, there seems to be a crashed Goblin racer adorning the otherwise pristine landscape. Not a good sign for the future of Goblin racing technology, I'd say... Do you have a unique shot of Azeroth or Outland that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? Pheonix_singing found Outland... and it's in South Carolina. Doing a little searching, I also found Durotan, Nagrand, Crossroads (oh man watch out for all the Chuck Norris jokes there), and Lakeshire. Unfortunately, Azeroth doesn't appear on Google Maps anywhere-- at least until they start mapping other planets. Until then, of course, MapWoW's got the monopoly.I have to give it to Blizzard for their place names-- they're really, really good at coming up with names that sound real, but aren't. Stranglethorn Vale is a perfect name for the southern tip of the Eastern Kingdom, and Feralas and Desolace are perfect for their ambient locations as well, but none of those names directly refer to anything on a real map. And even Azeroth is a pretty epic sounding name that Blizzard (Metzen, probably) pulled out of thin air. Well, not completely thin air-- they did kind of nab it fromone of their first games, which was based in "Androth." But still. And my favorite name from Warcraft isn't on any real map either-- it's Thousand Needles (or 1K Needles, as I like to call it). I don't know how a designer looked at the hundreds of plateaus south of the Barrens and decided to call it that, but I'm glad they did.

Demit of Anetheron sends in this amazing shot of the sun setting over the Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles. With the reddish sky reflecting off the smooth white sand below, the scene looks quite peaceful... right up until the moment you recall that Shimmering Flats is full of vultures, basilisks, scorpids, and even a few silithid.Do you have a unique shot of Azeroth or Outland that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? Reader Xylar of Tichondrius sent in this lovely shot taken of the sun setting over Thousand needles from the Horde outpost of Freewind Post. (And I really feel for those of you out there who play Alliance but have never played Horde -- this particular Horde-only location gives quite a view.)Do you have a unique shot of Azeroth or Outland that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? • Death by elevator

Don't lie now. Darksavior on Norgannon does a humility check: raise your hand if you've been killed by the Undercity elevator.*Raises hand.* For some reason, my characters are particularly suicidal. Or maybe just accident prone. And it's not just UC-- Azeroth is filled with crazy death contraptions. Have you died jumping off the Zepplin, or falling down off of Thunder Bluff (or that elevator)? I died once by walking off the top of one of those plateaus in Thousand Needles, and once by falling into Un'Goro crater. I even died in the Gnomeregan elevator, and a friend and I jumped off of the Stonewrought Dam just for fun (although that time, I think we lived because we fell in the water). I'm pretty sure that, way back on the first time I ever played this game, I even died (maybe even for the first time) by jumping off that tall tower in the Night Elf starting area. And Outland is no exception-- have you jumped off of Outland yet? I have. I don't think the elevator in the Mechanar has killed anyone, but there are a few good drops in Nagrand, and the drop off of Hellfire Citadel is trouble. And if you didn't finally buy your flying mount at 70, fly up as high as you could, and unsummon it just to see if you could summon it again on the way back down, you're a better man than I am. What other ignoble deaths have you suffered from-- or should I say strangely enjoyed?
