  • Check-in, Knock-out: More fun than jumping on hotel beds

Checking into a hotel can be stressful. Even if your overnight establishment of choice doesn't lose or otherwise muck up your reservation, what if you don't have a reservation in the first place and there's no vacancy? And then, there are the hotels that force you to do battle with your fellow room-seekers, tossing exploding luggage and tearing the room apart in an effort to make them fall to their death. What, you've never had that happen? Clearly you haven't played Check-in, Knock-out. But you should.

  • 'Streamlined' real-time strategy game BOID debuts January 8

Publisher TinyBuild Games (they of Speedrunners fame) has announced that Mokus Games' "streamlined" real-time strategy game BOID will reach Steam Early Access on January 8. You'll find a launch trailer beyond the break. TinyBuild claims that though BOID is a class-based multiplayer RTS, it eschews the complexity of most strategy games, and instead focuses on quick thinking and mind games. "[BOID] takes place in an underwater world populated by glowing, tadpole-like creatures," reads Alexander's description of a hands-on demo he played at Gamescom. "They swim toward colored nodes spread across the map and claim them, which yields more units and resources. You left-click drag to select units, and right click to send the little swimmers swarming toward their destination, where they'll battle others to claim the circle." Compared to the dozens of units and structures most RTS games expect players to micromanage, that certainly does seem straightforward. As with all Early Access games, players hoping to navigate the waters of BOID do so at their own risk. Though multiplayer functionality and online matchmaking have already been added to the game, it will not be a finished product on January 8 and will likely contain technical problems. If you must play the game as soon as possible, by all means go for it. But consider this a polite warning that the experience won't be flawless. [Image: TinyBuild Games]

SpeedRunners, a game about superheroes racing one another to the scene of a crime, has racked up 162 years of total playtime and $1 million worth of sales, according to an infographic from No Time To Explain studio and SpeedRunners publisher, tinyBuild. You can check out the full list of facts after the break. Developed by DoubleDutch Games, SpeedRunners was released on Steam Early Access in August of last year. It gained a surge in popularity thanks in part to exposure from YouTube personalities such as Swedish sensation PewDiePie, and more statistics shared by tinyBuild attest to this; according to tinyBuild, 1 in 1,000 people in Sweden own a copy of the game. The final version of SpeedRunners is due for release on PC by the end of 2014 "... probably," according to tinyBuild. A free version will be available as well, with a console version sprinting to Xbox One in 2015.

  • Boid boils real-time strategy down to essentials soon

Mokus Games, creators of 2011's iPad Game of the Year, Contre Jour, revealed a new game called Boid this morning. Published by SpeedRunners developer TinyBuild, Boid is an extremely streamlined multiplayer real-time strategy gaming coming "first" (and soon) to Steam. We tried Boid's demo last night in Germany, where we're staying for this week's GDC Europe and Gamescom, and the concept of the game is super lean, and a classic example of "easy to learn, difficult to master."

SpeedRunners, the four-player racing elimination game from tinyBuild, is due out on Xbox One in 2015, after its Steam release. SpeedRunners is currently on Steam Early Access, and already it has "thousands" of players online during peak times, tinyBuild says. The game is local or online multiplayer (or local and online multiplayer), and it has players race against each other through a series of side-scrolling, platforming environments where they can swing, dash and lay traps for competitors, all with the goal of reaching the finish first. SpeedRunners comes from a collaboration between two independent studios, DoubleDutch Games and No Time to Explain developer tinyBuild. DoubleDutch created the original SpeedRunners HD, which launched on Xbox Live Indie Games in 2011, and tinyBuild is publishing and co-developing this updated version. [Image: tinyBuild]

Lovely Planet, the new game published by No Time To Explain creators tinyBuild Games, is now available on Steam. Unlike the 2D platformer the studio is known for, Lovely Planet is a 3D first-person shooter focused on classic run-jump-shoot gameplay a la Unreal Tournament. Only, instead of meaty bits and graphic violence, we see a whole lot of bright colors and landscapes that remind us of Katamari Damacy. A release trailer touts that the game is rendered in 1080p resolution and runs at 60 frames per second, though we imagine that's something of a joke; the game doesn't feature highly-detailed textures or complex animations, and both proclamations are accompanied by an asterisk noting that "conditions apply." Conditions like the fact it's a PC game, perhaps? You can explore developer QUICKTEQUILA's Lovely Planet on Steam for $5.09 until August 7, at which point it will rise to $6. Spoilers are generally frowned upon, but we're ready to make an exception when it's the central theme of the game in question. Case in point: Spoiler Alert, a game played in reverse. In this self-described "comedy platformer," you un-shoot fireballs, un-throw hammers and give bosses their lives back on your un-quest to un-rescue Princess Tomato. The game features 100 levels spread across four worlds, but you can create your own using the included level editor as well. Spoiler Alert is developed by two-man Danish studio MegaFuzz and published by tinyBuild Games, the studio behind No Time To Explain and the upcoming JetGetters. It un-made its way to Steam earlier this week and is currently on sale for $6.39 - 20 percent off - until July 7. [Image: MegaFuzz/tinyBuild Games]

  • TinyBuild kills JetGetters funding drive, despite surpassing goal

It's not uncommon for a developer to cancel a crowdfunding drive, but it's not often you see a project go dark after exceeding its funding goal - yet that's exactly what TinyBuild Games has done. Though JetGetters, an action game centering on the thrills of hijacking aircraft in flight, pulled in nearly $2,000 more than its initial $50,000 funding goal, TinyBuild has canceled the fundraiser. If you backed the game, don't worry, TinyBuild is not going to walk away with your cash. Instead, everyone who backed the game will keep their money and receive the tinyBundle, a compilation including all seven of the developer's games. Why walk away from all that money? According to TinyBuild, it's due to an unforeseen development delay. JetGetters is still en route, but the developer now claims it will be delayed by a few months. Instead of disappointing the game's backers, TinyBuild would rather let everyone keep their money - especially since the game found corporate backing during the recent PAX East conference. "Because of the time it will take in bringing our new partners up-to-speed and hiring on additional people for JetGetters we have decided to cancel the Kickstarter," stated the developer in its final Kickstarter update. "The main reason for this is because we feel strongly that if we promise something, we better damn well deliver on it and with the few month delay we won't be able to deliver JetGetters this year." "We have a reputation to uphold and don't want to be lumped in with all the other Kickstarters that have been delayed and or abandoned," added the update. "Being up front and honest about everything is always what we strive for." [Image: TinyBuild Games]
