  • Ridiculous Fishing creator reeling from Apple Design Award, talks TU

Vlambeer founders Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman didn't think Ridiculous Fishing would win an Apple Design Award. Sure, it was in the running, but it was a long shot, and they had other places to be during the ceremony at WWDC on June 10 (E3, anyone?). Just in case, they asked Ridiculous Fishing collaborator and indie extraordinaire Zach Gage to go to the show, and he did. In flip flops. And shorts. And Ridiculous Fishing won. "Holy shit," Ismail laughed during our chat at E3. He was still getting over the fact that Ridiculous Fishing won an Apple Design Award, and that Gage collected it in what's commonly considered summer beach attire. So far Ridiculous Fishing sales have hit the "hundreds of thousands," Ismail said, and after the Design Award, sales spiked again. Even Elijah Wood got hooked on Ridiculous Fishing – or, as Ismail put it, "The Hobbit played it!"

  • Metro: Last Light dev warns against changing FOV with coming patch

Metro: Last Light features a fixed field of view, and while we didn't have a problem with that, other players have. Developer 4A Games heard the feedback and has a fix in the next title update coming to Steam – but it comes with a warning. Changing the field of view could trigger a range of bugs, including breaking cut scene animations and decreasing game performance in general. "We had considered offering three FOV pre-sets, but this would still require significant work to re-do every animation, adjust the HUD and UI and other seemingly small but incredibly time consuming tasks," 4A writes on the game's Steam discussion board. "Even with a wider but still fixed field of view, Artyom's hands would look too far away. We know – we tried." 4A is looking at other possible solutions, but for now the next title update's fix will have to do. "This may well trigger a number of issues listed above – you have been warned!" 4A says.

  • Chunky Spelunky update eliminates unintended ordeals

A new title update for Spelunky on Xbox Live Arcade aims to eradicate the ignominious, agonizing fates caused by errant programming. This brings the brutal cave exploration game more in line with designer Derek Yu's vision, which is basically a die-o-rama of ignominious, agonizing fates caused by deliberate game design.Spelunky should be more stable once the update is applied and cease its crashing ways when you exit a level with a too-high timer, or when you get crushed during the tutorial. It's also been granted the iron constitution to properly handle the sight of you being "eaten by a worm and killed by a ghost at the same time."You'll also be delighted to hear that choosing "Ending Adventure" in the middle of an exit will no longer cause bags to pour out of you, it says here.

"The End" of Minecraft, which involves battling a giant Ender Dragon in a barren, vast void, is coming to the game's XBLA version in Title Update 8, Play XBLA reveals. Title Update 7 is next on the list, and it will bring most of the features from PC version 1.0.1, including animal breeding, potion brewing, experience points, enchantment tables, the mushroom biome and nether fortress.XBLA developer 4J Studios handed out a few extra details on Twitter, noting that leveling up takes 30 experience points, rather than 50 as in the PC version, and XP is earned by mining, smelting and breeding. Ender Pearls will teleport and can be thrown in creative mode. Title Update 7 will not include ocelots, jungles, spawn eggs or Iron Golems.

  • Next Madden 13 title update lands Thursday, adds Ultimate Team features

The fourth title update for Madden NFL 13 is scheduled to go live November 29, and includes a few new features for Madden Ultimate Team (MUT). The ability to set multiple lineups for your MUT squad highlights the list of changes. Players will now be able to save up to five different lineups.Another change coming in this week's title update is described as "more nuanced roster management," and is also geared towards Ultimate Team. Instead of breaking down roster management by offense, defense and special teams in MUT, the update sorts teams by more specific positions, such as offensive line and defensive secondary. Each roster segment will show your team's starters as well as eligible players on your bench. The Madden team is also adding a boosts screen in this update, which will display every ratings boost equipped to your team.Among the other features being added to MUT are quick collections and the ability to play two minute quarters in the mode. Quick collections reward players that are among the first to finish a card collection in Madden Ultimate Team with special bonuses."What we're really striving for is aiming these title updates not just at bug fixes, but adding brand-new content so people feel like they're constantly getting a new game experience," an EA rep told Joystiq. Past title updates added server-side fantasy drafts and player editing in career mode. We've also been told that another announcement is due later this week. • Madden 13 emphasizing post-launch support, first update in September [Update]

    08.22.2012

The first title update for Madden NFL 13 is scheduled for September 11, two weeks after the launch of the game on August 28. While we have no details yet on what the update will include, post-launch support for the game is expected to increase compared with last year's game. Madden 12's first title update came roughly seven weeks after the game's launch. The game's "tuner sets" feature, which was included and hardly used in Madden 12, gives the development team the opportunity to issue small gameplay tweaks without the use of a full title update. EA Tiburon's team plans to "closely monitor community feedback and will quickly release tuners based on any major issues reported." The same can't be said for Madden 12, as its lack of consistent updates became a glaring issue in sports gaming communities such as Pastapadre and OperationSports."The team is absolutely committed to post-launch support, and we will make it a point to keep you updated on title updates, tuner sets, roster updates, new Madden Moments Live and more," EA said in a statement to Joystiq. Providing the Madden team sticks to its goals, Madden 13 is likely to receive more post-launch support out of the gate than last year's game had entirely.Update: EA has reached out to say it is unable to confirm the first update to Madden 13 will arrive on September 11 until the date is approved by console holders. While it is anticipated for that date, further testing could push the date back.

Minecraft's Xbox 360 iteration just got a mess of fixes in its latest update ("Title Update 4"), including pistons at the world's edge causing crashes and thunder "not being audible." Why, that's no thunder at all, then!Remedies are also given for the newly released skin packs and and several other minor glitches/bugs. And no, there are no content additions this time around, mostly just fixes for the last big update. But that Adventure Update is totally still coming!

Terminal, the popular airport map from Modern Warfare 2, is heading to Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin has revealed via a series of tweets. Better still, Rubin says Terminal will be free for everyone, existing outside of the Elite subscription model.Rubin says Terminal is in Microsoft certification now and the release date and official confirmation may not go public until Thursday or Friday. The map isn't confirmed to hit Xbox 360 first, but that is still an option. It may even drop as a title update, rather than a separate batch of DLC. MP1st has compiled a few of Rubin's tweets in one place, but he's still at it on his own feed.

A recent patch for Fez that fixed exploits but also corrupted save files was pulled from Xbox Live by Microsoft, according to an update on developer Polytron's blog. The issues caused by the title update could potentially be resolved by clearing the Xbox 360 cache, though now new players shouldn't be affected. We reached out to Polytron for comment, and were told the developer will "have more details as we work things out with [Microsoft] after the weekend."

The long-awaited patch for Fez has finally arrived, though you may want to hold the fanfare. While the patch does fix a number of glitches and prevents a lot of exploits and problematic "infinite death loops" (eek!), it also introduces a "fairly widespread" new problem, according to Polytron. Specifically, "the save file can be seen as corrupted by the game after installing the patch."Clearing the Xbox 360 cache "should resolve the issue." If that doesn't work, however, "there is no known workaround." In other words, you probably shouldn't play Fez until Polytron patches the patch.

RedLynx is delivering the first title update for popular motorcycle crash simulator Trials Evolution, adding fixes for a number of game issues, as well as tweaks to get rid of high score-ensuring loopholes.Because a lot of "corrupted data" made it on to the leaderboards at launch, according to RedLynx, the multiplayer scoreboards in Trials Evolution will be reset when the patch goes live at 2:00 AM PDT Wednesday morning. Single-player leaderboards, player-created track leaderboards, and multiplayer ranks won't be affected by this change.RedLynx recommends that players stay out of multiplayer for four to six hours after the update, in order to make sure that any scores earned are recorded correctly. What else can you do between the hours of two and eight AM? Sleeping is one option. Just throwing that out there.

Today, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received the first title update we've seen for a Vita game -- an update containing the free "Heroes & Heralds" mode. When I tried to load up the game to test online again, I was alerted to this fact, and then kicked out to the main menu.Having since completed the procedure and updated the game, I thought I would demonstrate how updates are applied on Vita games. Welcome to the future!

Sick and tired of people hiding in that one spot on Mercy and, well, mercilessly gunning you down? Well, Epic's finally fixed that (among other things) in its third title update for Gears of War 3. You'll be prompted to download the update upon booting up your game today. It also addresses ghost camera issues and allows players to prime a revive for a DBNO (down but not out) teammate by holding in the Y button before they approach. It's basically the same thing as holding in the X button before approaching a weapon pickup. Random Quickmatch playlist map order is another addition, as is non-Versus mode weapon swaps in Horde mode. Now, players will find the default weapons on each map that were available when the game initially shipped, as opposed to the current weapon assignments found in online versus multiplayer matches. [Thanks, Steve D.]

  • Gran Turismo 5 2.02 update and DLC lands Dec. 20

You probably wouldn't guess it by talking to one of us, but petrolheads do have the ability to get burnt out on a specific vehicle. It may take a long time, granted, but eventually we'll get bored with our current ride and wish that we had some new iron to tool around with. It's called "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" (GAS), and GAS can be devastatingly expensive if left unchecked. Thankfully though, the GAS methadone clinic known as Gran Turismo 5 is here to keep those urges in check with a title update and several new sets of wheels, all of which become available on December 20. Car Pack 2 will set you back $3.99 and will furnish your ever-growing garage with a 2012 Nissan GT-R Black R35, a 2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R, a 2010 Volkswagen Gold VI R and the 2011 Mini Cooper S. Additionally, anyone who has purchased GT5 DLC in the past will also receive the Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 SP, which is go-kart for some reason. The (free) 2.02 title update also includes a set of wheels: The recently revealed 2013 Toyota GT-86. Beyond that, the update boasts a slew of interface improvements and even nets you 10 oil change and car wash coupons (in-game, of course). Hopefully this will keep our greasy little mechanic hands busy enough to prevent us from taking out a second mortgage and buying that Thunderbird we've been eyeing.%Gallery-142045%

  • Modern Warfare 3 adds Community Playlists, title update

    by

    12.16.2011

Modern Warfare 3 players are in for a few treats today. First off, Activision's blockbuster has been updated with multiplayer playlist tweaks and an entirely new mode. Dubbed "Drop Zone," the latter tasks players with capturing and holding a ... drop zone. The team with the most players in the zone will receive a care package every fifteen seconds. The twist: Earning care packages is the only way to achieve pointstreaks. Drop Zone marks the first entry in the new Community Playlists section, which will play host to "popular or unique private match modes" created by users themselves. The second playlist change is the addition of Hardcore Headquarters Ricochet to the Hardcore playlist. Furthermore, all Hardcore modes will now feature ricochet, meaning that all friendly fire will be reflected back to the attacker. In other words: Shooting a teammate is basically shooting yourself. Finally, Infinity Ward community guru Robert Bowling has tweeted that a title update will be available today to address "Host Disadvantage" / "Lag Compensation."

As much as we're all enjoying our lack of sleep and food, plugging away countless hours in Skyrim, there are a multitude of bugs that need to be addressed. It would appear the wait is coming to an end, as Pete Hines took to Twitter to confirm title updates are incoming soon. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 updates have been submitted, with the PC soon to follow. Hines says current estimates for the updates to go live are the week after Thanksgiving -- that's the week after next, for all of you non-Americans -- but that's hardly set in stone. In the meantime, just try to keep saving as often as you can!

  • First Homefront DLC is 'Fire Sale' map pack coming June 7; 360 title update brings fixes, Ability Pack

    05.26.2011

When THQ promised a "wide range of exciting DLC" for its shooter Homefront, we honestly expected something besides a map pack. Nowadays, if your map pack doesn't have at least one celebrity in it, we're not even taking the call. Homefront's first piece of DLC is the on-Xbox-first "Fire Sale" map pack which "will carry you further into the heart of a war torn and twisted America." No word on the number of maps in this pack, nor the modes supported, price, or number of celebrity cameos. About the only thing we do know is the name and the date: June 7. More concerned with being able to play the Homefront maps you already have? THQ also announced that a Title Update is available now for Xbox 360 that offers improvements to the game's "overall stability and network connectivity." Some of the higher profile improvements include: "game returns to MP menu instead of Main Menu after leaving a match," "Max ping limits for server connections" which should prevent connections to distant servers, "game freeze and hitching," and the "joining friends feature." As a kind of thank you, THQ is including the "Ability Pack" which features some new goodies for your multiplayer game. Get a full rundown at the Source link below. [Update: THQ let us know that a PC patch went live yesterday and a PS3 patch is in the works, but has been delayed due to the PSN outage. And what about those details on the DLC? We'll get "more detailed information" on the 7th, we're told. In fact, it should be the most detailed information since it will actually be out and all.]
