Nintendo sends Toad to ruin your Christmas with a terrible carol
When it comes to Nintendo characters who you might expect to sing Christmas carols, Toad probably isn't at the top of the list. As adorable as he is in general, the Mushroom Kingdom resident doesn't exactly have a voice best suited to holiday songs.
Transmog Inspirations: WoW meets Nintendo, part 2
I give up. I can't for the life of me create a transmog for Princess Peach. I've tried and I've tried, but there just aren't enough pink clothes in the World of Warcraft to piece together a convincing Peach. I'm sorry, Mario, but you're going to have to settle for some other princess. Princess Poobah? Princess Theradras? Princess ... I can't think of any more. Someone call Anne! Anyway, this week I decided to put together a few more transmogs based on Nintendo characters. A lot of readers were asking for more, so I made one for Princess Zelda, Toad, and Roy (you know, from Fire Emblem and Super Smash Bros. -- everyone loves Roy!).
One Shots: Come sail away
Sure, you can get all manner of mounts, but in very few games can you get a boat of your own. Today's One Shots shows off a lovely shot of several ships, just ready for passengers to head off for adventure in Vanguard. Toad, who sent this in, describes the scene: Toad along with his friend Aenedor take a break from hunting elementals and stand together admiring the Tall Ships moored in the Sea of Kojan, part of the Kojani Archipilago. Player owned galleons were a relatively recent addition to Vanguard and are still quite rare so it was very cool to see these three along with two smaller vessels moored amongst the islands of Kojan.Does your favorite MMO boast a cool-looking way to get around? The Mountain Goats and Kaki King record musical tribute to Toad
It's very rare that we ever write about happenings in the rarely-agreed-upon realm of music -- then again, we suppose it's also pretty rare that two extremely talented musical entities collaborate on a tribute to one of gaming's most underappreciated ancillary characters: Super Mario Bros. mushroom-headed bearer of bad news, Toad. In their upcoming album, Black Pear Tree EP, the folk-rock troubadours of The Mountain Goats teamed up with renowned guitar-tapping madwoman, Kaki King, to record Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is In Another Castle.The track, which concludes the six-song EP, is available to stream and download for free on Pitchfork. If you're a fan of the artists involved (or a staunch supporter of Mario's polka-dotted companion), it's definitely worth a listen. Even if you aren't, it'd be nice to give your ears a break from the High School Musical soundtrack you've been listening to for the past hour. That's right -- we know.
New Mario Kart Wii tournament focuses on Toad
A new Mario Kart Wii tournament has been revealed on the game's Japanese website. And, as you've gathered from the title of this very post, the tourney will focus on Peach's little helper, Toad.You can see, the track for the tournament will be Mushroom Gorge. Racers will need to go through the track backwards, as well as have selected Toad as their driver. For those of you who want to get their practice in, have at it. Birdo & Silver & Jet & Donkey Kong at the Olympic Games
As if Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games wasn't already home to enough abysmal characters, a group of hackers have discovered a way to unlock numerous other unused playable characters in the title, including Silver the Hedgehog, Jet the -- ugh -- Hawk, and Donkey Kong (who would have been a welcome addition, actually). Birdo is also available, though comes with some sort of hideous facial deformity, as though the model never had its nose finished. It looks kind of wrong, truth be told. Not as wrong as this, mind.There are plenty of other background characters that can be played with (some of which are fairly obscure), though only in certain events (such as trampolining). These include Shy Guy, Toad, the gut-churning Charmy, Espio, Cream, Boo, Bullet Bill (!), Goomba (!!), "Heroes Enemy 1," "Heroes Enemy 2," "SA1 Monkey," and -- nooo! -- Big the Cat. New Super Mario Brothers plush toys are new, super, and plush
We really weren't fans of Mario's blue shell ability in New Super Mario Bros., because it tended to steer us inexorably into a lava-filled grave. But we want to hug this plush Blue Shell Mario. And then maybe toss him into lava. Play-Asia is selling these adorable NSMB toys, produced by Banpresto, for about $11 each. You have your choice of the aforementioned Mario, a Mega Mushroom, Boo, Luigi (in casino minigame regalia) and Toad. Does anyone else find it odd that Luigi still wears his green hat, even when he's in formal attire? [Via Siliconera]
Myspace invades Mario
Poor Toad. He's always getting kidnapped, plays the role as the third wheel for Mario and Peach and now no one will come to his band's shows. Luigi, after deciding to kick the crack-like habit known as MySpace, has left an empty slot in his brother Mario's Top 8. For those of you smart enough to not give in to the succubus that is MySpace, a Top 8 is a list of your dearest friends who also belong to the cult. Toad longs for that slot in an overly creepy way.
