CoX Issue 12: Inside the Midnighter Club
City of Heroes Issue 12: Midnight Hour is now in Open Beta. We've brought you a tour of Cimerora, and now venture into the Midnighter Club, home of the Midnight Squad. The zone itself is unusual for CoX. Although access to it has to be unlocked, with separate arcs on the hero and villain side giving access, it currently contains no mission content of its own. There is a time-travelling crystal giving access to Cimerora and a store selling level 35 to 50 Enhancements of all kinds. That aside, the Midnighter Club is useful as a shortcut between heroside universities and a sumptuously atmospheric roleplaying area. The club also contains a Mystery, a form of treasure hunt that players can follow by clicking on objects.%Gallery-22236% Face down the forces of evil! Give good a quick jab to the jaw! Massively has all the CoX Issue 12 news you can handle. Make sure to check it out!
Adrian Bott05.07.2008The Guild visits Blizzard HQ
The cast and crew of The Guild got invited by Blizzard to come take a tour of the new facilities the other week, and they have a writeup on their website right now (written by Jeff Lewis, who plays Vork on the show) of their trip. Sounds like a lot of fun -- they got to tour the place, obviously, checking out the Hall of Fame, the gym and cafeteria (including the official "Blizzard Trays" area -- that sign makes me laugh), and the main offices. They also got to sit down and each lunch with Mike Morhaime, and then got to play both Starcraft 2 and some Rock Band with the staff. No Wrath?Blizzard sent them home with lots of swag, too. I was under the impression, especially given the comments on our last Guild post, that we weren't really sure that the game these guys were playing was World of Warcraft -- they've never said the name, as far as I know, and we've never seen any character shots. But Blizzard disagrees, apparently -- they've very sure The Guild is playing WoW, and they gave them a super nice tour for being a part of the game and the community.
Mike Schramm05.05.2008Nintendo takes Wii Fit out for a run in the UK
Nintendo is bringing Wii Fit to the people, to convince the few UK residents who have yet to preorder the thing that they're disgusting sacks they could benefit from a fun exercise program. The Wii Fit tour is traveling to populous locations like universities and shopping centers from this week through June to get random strangers up and leaning. "If you loved the energetic nature of Wii Sports you'll love Wii Fit, which makes it easy for everyone to experience a fun and interactive way to exercise which launches across the UK on 25th April 2008," the press release states (weirdly). They're right -- playing it at one of these events is going to be a lot easier than trying to find the thing in a store. The tour starts this week at Mall Galleries in Bristol, where Wii Fit will be on display from the 18th to the 20th. The full list of dates and locations is after the break.%Gallery-4745%
JC Fletcher04.17.2008Hitachi takes skinny HDTVs on the road, your LCD wants to purge
Flat panel manufacturer's disgusting obsession with being thin is coming to a high-end location near you, thanks to Hitachi's "Thin is in Motion" campaign. Focused on its 1.5-inch thick ultra-thin family of LCDs, the company is sending four trucks around the country equipped with 32- and 37-inch display models on rotating pedestals (because who doesn't watch their HDTV from the back or side angle?) to show off how thin they are. We wouldn't advise showing these to impressionable "fat" panels, for fear of psychological damage.
Richard Lawler03.04.2008Tour all of Macworld 2008 in less than five minutes
Two weeks ago the world was a-twitter with speculation as to what in the world Apple meant by "Something is in the Air." Of course, if you tuned in to our talkcast, you heard a pretty good tip on that score, but the next day El Steve-O dropped a shiny-new, paper-thin, slightly-underpowered (depending on your needs) portable in our collective laps.So as we bid adieu to TUAW's complete Macworld 2008 coverage, we'd like to point out you can relive the magic in several ways. First there's the video in this post, with a frantic run-through of the floor, interviews, booths and more. Second, there's our Macworld 2008 tagged pages. And lastly, our Macworld 2008 summary page, nicely organized into manageable chunks so you can find what you need quickly. We're still uploading all these videos to the various video places around the web, and as we update individual posts, we'll update the Macworld 2008 page too.The next big event for us will be WWDC (whenever that happens to be, but last year it was June 11-15). Of course, TUAW will be there, interviewing developers and hopefully hosting another fun meetup. Stay tuned![music by cdk]
Victor Agreda Jr01.28.2008A sampling of Mac games on display at Macworld 2008
Mike took a tour of some Mac game booths over in Moscone West. Check out a quick review of Tiger Woods Golf, Sims Pool and Sims Bowling for the iPod, making machinima using 'The Movies' (who'd a thunk it), a brief interlude with Aquaria, a true Guitar Hero (seriously, one of the world's best takes on the hardest song on the hardest setting), and a look at EVE Online, now available in PC, Linux and Mac. All this in less than 9 minutes.
Victor Agreda Jr01.22.2008Sony Ericsson's Z660i in the flesh, maybe
We saw this pic back in December, and it turns out it was dragged out of a video on the Sony Ericsson site, wow, we're definitely liking what we've seen so far. The video is a demo tour of the supposed Z660i or "Becky" showing off a few of its features -- though no specs of course -- from the viewpoint of some sweaty gym-goer. Couple quick things we picked up, the handset features 3G, though the locales are European -- so we're ready for the bad news -- it may have GPS as Google maps is featured, plus it flips and looks sweet. We hoping we see more on this bad boy or perhaps even an announcement in the coming weeks. Video is available after the break.
Sean Cooper01.21.2008Explore Richard Garriott's secret dungeons
Ever wanted to own a medieval-esque castle with secret passages and a dungeon? Produce one of the most significant gaming franchises in history and that dream could become a reality. The HGTV show Secret Spaces was guided by gaming industry eccentric Richard Garriott, aka Lord/General British, through Garriott's Austin home. Garriott became extravagantly wealthy through his Ultima series of computer games, and has spent some of his money building a house/castle hybrid called "Britannia Manor." The manor is full of secret passageways, hidden rooms, and strange artifacts. We have the YouTube video here for you. Unfortunately, they didn't show where he keeps his Sputnik satellite.[Via Joystiq]
Samuel Axon11.21.2007Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour starts in August
Just in case you thought Disney's support of the Blu-ray format might be slipping, the company is taking its show on the road with an 18-city mall tour to promote the format. Disney's Magical Blu-ray tour, sponsored by fellow Blu-ray backers and experienced mall-tourers Panasonic, starts August 17th and aims to educate customers about the format with interactive demos of Blu-ray movies and hourly presentations on Blu-ray tech. While consumer confusion over high definition in general and the format war specifically is definitely a problem, we have a feeling that "education" will go a lot more smoothly once hardware prices drop a bit more. Check the link for dates the tour is coming near you, no word on if the HD DVD tour plans to crash any stops.
Richard Lawler07.17.2007New iPhone vid demystifies the "keyboard"
In perhaps a move to stave off some rumblings of disappointment that typing on Apple's soon-to-be ubiquitous new device may be a little less "intuitive" than they had hoped, the company has added a new video into its iPhone movie catalogue detailing the "correct" operation of the phone's virtual keyboard. Interestingly, the video outlines the use of a heretofore unseen feature -- the magnifying glass -- which allows you to reposition your cursor while typing. Check the link for a whole bunch of one-finger typing.[Thanks, Isabelle]
Joshua Topolsky06.27.2007Gamerscore Blog's Road Tour stops in Chicago
Our good friends over at the Gamerscore Blog have officially kicked off their North American Road Tour '07 with a stop in Chicago on Sunday. And while in Chicago they got a chance to check out the silver bean, go to a Cubs game, and most importantly spent some time with the Xbox community playing some games. And if you're curious, they posted all of the Chicago fun (in picture form) on their Flickr account where we spotted a pic of XBLA game Track & Field. We didn't get a chance to attend the event, but we were wondering if any of our fellow fanboys made it to Chicago for the good times. If so, did you have a crazy amount of fun hanging out with the Gamerscore Blog crew? We hear they're cool kittens.
Dustin Burg05.21.2007Joystiq tour: Xbox 360 Spring '07 Dashboard update
As promised, we updated the old Xbox 360 this morning and in (literally) less than 30 seconds, we were tooling around the Spring '07 Dashboard update, checking out the Marketplace blade and fiddling with the new Windows Live Messenger integration. Everything seemed to work according to plan, except a ghost from our past came back to haunt us: Xbox 360 annoyance number 10.You see, you can't change the Windows Live ID linked to your gamertag. Like, at all. You just can't do it. You can't do it on their website. You can't call up 1-800-4MY-XBOX and do it. Why? Microsoft says, "Your Windows Live ID credentials are permanently linked to a specific Xbox Live enabled profile. You cannot break this link." This was a minor annoyance before; however, now it's been elevated to a full-blown frustration. Good thing we don't use Windows Messenger at Joystiq HQ.While we spent time testing out the Windows Live integration, our buds at Engadget tested out the update's enhanced video capabilities. They were pleased to report no trouble playing back several flavors of H.264 and MPEG-4 content, declaring the Xbox 360 the winner in the digital video living room arena (take that AppleTV!). But enough talk, have at our illustrated tour of the Xbox 360 dashboard update:
Christopher Grant05.09.2007Conan O'Brien visits, mocks Intel HQ
Sure it's interesting to watch geeks give other geeks tours of data centers, automated warehouses, fab plants, and the like, but sometimes you'd rather just kick back and hear an outsider's perspective on an industry we sometimes take way too seriously. So we're sure a lot of you will get a kick out of Conan O'Brien's recent tour of Intel's Santa Clara headquarters (video after the break), where instead of discussing northbridges and front side bus speeds, the mischievous host mocks the company's drab grey interior and Dilbert-esque maze of cubes delineated parking lot-style by letter-number combinations. While a few of the bits fall flat (don't play dumb Conan -- we all know you went to Harvard), the carrot-topped ex-Simpsons writer really falls into stride when he meets a group of second graders touring the Intel museum: "Was this your first choice for a field trip, kids?" "NOOOOOO!!!" [Warning: Video may be NSFW due to a brief scene of animals engaged in adult relations.] Update: Whoops, guess NBC Universal doesn't like YouTube hosting Conan clips, 'cause the video that was formerly after the break and all those like it have mysteriously disappered. So you'll just have to take our word and that of your fellow readers: it was pretty funny. Update 2: Thank heaven for all the YouTube clones! Video is up over here. Let's hope clipstr stays under the radar for a little while longer.
Evan Blass05.08.2007Final Cut Studio 2 tour coming to a town near you
There are lots of new features in the recently announced Final Cut Studio 2. So many, in fact, that Apple is having a Final Cut Studio 2 tour that is making stops in the following cities: Washington, D.C. Seattle Miami Hollywood San Francisco Atlanta Dallas New York City There seem to be three different sessions available. Final Cut Studio 2: What's New covers the new additions to the Suite. Final Cut Studio: Overview is, as you might guess, an overview of the whole suite, and Final Cut Studio 2: All Access which includes both. All these sessions are free, but you do need to register (though registration isn't open yet).
Scott McNulty04.15.2007Today's sneakiest game video: Frontlines - Fuel of War hidden tour
Sneaky hidden videos will always score high on our list, particularly if they don't involve Britney, Paris, and Lindsay. It's time we reclaimed their 15 minutes because they've run into serious overtime. So, the story behind this video is as follows: 'Games For Windows' Magazine recently filmed a totally unathorized, hidden video tour of Kaos Studios for a piece about Frontlines: Fuel of War. They weren't thrilled about having their HQ filmed Geraldo-style, but THQ (the publisher) didn't want to retaliate against the magazine, for fear that they would give them a bad review in return. So, once all the smoke has cleared, what does that leave us with? Frankly, not too much. Either it's a well planned "fake" secret video, or else it's a new wave of marketing going into effect that really embraces the old adage "there's no such thing as bad publicity." Of course, nothing really groundbreaking or damaging was revealed in this video ... or was it? Does this mean we can start running around developer HQs with a camera, knowing that they won't want us to pan their upcoming games? Hmmmmmm ...
Kevin Kelly02.21.2007Booth tours in the galleries
We've been combing the extensive Macworld Expo 2007 floor since Tuesday and have posted some more booth tour galleries for your viewing enjoyment. Almost everyone has a presence here of some sort (sadly, almost), so we're doing our best to hit as may of the booths we can. As of this post, we have a couple handfuls of booths up, including Belkin, Crumpler, iSkin, Marware and plenty more, with even more on the way. If you couldn't make it to Macworld, these booth tours and video coverage are your next best chance.
David Chartier01.10.2007Wii hits the mall
Now this is the sort of marketing Nintendo needs to be spending money on -- it's a Wii mall tour!Don't take this the wrong way. After all, we love the ads. We're full of ad love. But the best footage we've seen of how the Wii works isn't in the polished ads. It's not any of the Red Steel guys or the kids throwing down with Bleach. No, the best of what we've seen is tucked away in the Wii experience videos, because they showcase the vast oceans of fun that the Wii can provide. How to communicate that to the masses of nongamers? Let them get their hands on a Wiimote. Perhaps this mall tour can do a little more of what the kiosks are supposed to do. And if you're near a Westfield mall between November 15th and January 13th, maybe you can see it in action. Take a nongamer friend and put a Wiimote in their hand. It'll work, because peer pressure is what friends do best.Full list of mall tour locations after the jump. We do not have specific dates for each location yet, but we'll guess they go in order. So if you're around Arcadia, CA, start making some calls!
Alisha Karabinus11.14.2006Google Earth Automator actions
Nyhthawk at Automator.us has put together two Automator actions for Google Earth. The first is a 'Go To Location' action, while the second is a 'Save Screenshot' action. Since I can't find any version requirements for gEarth, I can only assume for now that they work with any version of the app (does anyone know any better?). Stefan Geens at Ogle Earth - a blog about Google Earth - points out that the obvious thing to do with these actions is to use them to created automated audio tours of locations, and he even created his own tour of Stockholm, while Nyhthawk provides tours of Silicon Valley and Paris on the Automator action's download page.Geeze, with Mac OS X 10.4, Automator and Google Earth - who needs a tour guide anymore?
David Chartier11.11.2006Panasonic's taking plasmas on tour
With the big holiday selling season coming up, Panasonic is hitting the road to "educate" consumers on the benefits of its plasma TVs. Featured most prominently in this roadshow is the famed 103-inch 1080p plasma, but more affordable 37-, 42-, 50- and 58-inch 720p models will make an appearance as well. The current 65-inch 1080p plasma will also be on show, but still no word on when the U.S. will see the new 1080p PZ600U series that would go so well with that new DMP-BD10. Between this and its Plasma Concierge program, Panasonic is doing a lot to capitalize on alleviate buyer confusion about HDTVs, if you live near Tyson's Corner Center Mall in Washington D.C. stop by and have a look today. Good luck at getting a pic of yourself next to that 103-incher in the Flickr pool before Mark Cuban.
Richard Lawler10.28.2006HD DVD tour stops at Digital Life 2006 and drops details on Miami Vice's U-control
The HD DVD tour isn't spending all its time in New York hanging out at the Today Show's new HD studios, its pulled up to Digital Life 2006 at the Javits Center. In a press release issued by the North American HD DVD Promotional Group there were also new details about the upcoming December 5th release of Miami Vice on HD DVD; like Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift and Accepted, it will include U-control special features. Viewers can check out specs on cars and boats featured in the movie, track car chases through Miami streets via GPS, or look at production photos and cast details while the movie continues to play. Firing off more shots in the format war, the group also announced statistics from AC Nielsen showing HD DVD owners have already purchased an average of 8.4 titles each, and Nielsen Videoscan numbers indicating HD DVD outsold "competing formats" -- we're pretty sure they don't mean VMD -- by nearly 3:1 in August. The best defense is a good offense, and the HD DVD camp is taking the big Blu-ray holiday push head-on, showcasing not just new movies but also new hardware like the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and upcoming Toshiba HD-XA2.
