The previous two games in the Super Smash Bros. series featured collectible trophies. Back in our day, these were sometimes difficult to obtain thanks to steep challenges, but we persevered and our digital trophy cases were a little shinier for it. Nintendo is alleviating some of the stress induced by these tougher challenges by allowing players to purchase trophies for the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. with in-game and in-system currency. According to Miiverse posts by Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai, the game's trophy shop offers players the chance to buy the collectible items using in-game gold or 3DS Play Coins. "If you're having a hard time getting certain trophies, why not just buy them," Sakurai wrote, noting that trophies "sometimes go on sale, too." 3DS Play Coins are earned while players travel with their systems in sleep mode, with the 3DS acting as a pedometer of sorts. While Super Smash Bros. Brawl had a whopping 544 trophies, Sakurai also teased that the upcoming "3DS version alone may have more than Brawl." Super Smash Bros. will reach the 3DS on October 3, followed by the Wii U version (which we rather enjoyed at E3) this winter. [Image: Nintendo]

If you've ever wanted the share the spoils of your RIFT achievements with your alts, you'll soon have the chance. Creative Director Bill "Daglar" Fisher took to the forums to announce a new trophy section coming to the store that will allow players to buy another copy of the rewards they've already earned from completing achievements. These copies will be bound to the account, however, so they can only be transferred to alts, not to poor achievement-less friends. In the future, Fisher said that the team will be experimenting with adding more exclusive items to this section. Players can expect to see trophies appear in store on the PTS in the upcoming weeks.

  • 'Bid for Greatness' with your trophies in Sony memorabilia auction

Sony has a big ol' pile of props, costumes and artwork left over from the production of its "Greatness Awaits" trailer that debuted during this year's E3. An auction website will now unload everything – but don't pull out your just wallet yet. You're going to use a different currency. The site is called Bid for Greatness, and rather than dropping huge wads of cash for one-of-a-kind memorabilia, users will instead bid the Gold Trophies associated with their PlayStation Network accounts. Sony will place a new item up for auction every day for the next fourteen days, with each auction lasting 24 hours. Available items range from concept artwork to complete costumes, such as this Killzone: Shadow Fall outfit that (as of press time) has a high bid of 975 Gold Trophies. Sony points out that Trophies bid on items will not be removed from their respective PSN accounts, so not only will the person who outbids you on something get that thing you wanted, they'll also have more trophies than you at the end of the day. Harsh.

  • Controversial God of War: Ascension trophy altered in upcoming patch

In a statement sent to Joystiq, developer Sony Santa Monica has confirmed it will change the name of a controversial God of War: Ascension trophy in a patch that should be available alongside the game on Tuesday. Once the patch is applied, the name of the trophy will be "Bros Before Foes."Originally named "Bros Before Hos" (as seen above), the trophy pops up soon after you help God of War's anti-hero, Kratos, brutally pummel a Fury, one of a trio of female antagonists in the game. (Though it's not a spoiler in light of the fact that Kratos beats everyone up, we've omitted the trophy description.) The change comes after negative reaction from early reviews to the jarring scene on and the attached award, which is perceived as misogynistic."We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game," Sony Santa Monica's statement noted. "We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we've addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question."Players will be instructed to download the update once God of War: Ascension has been inserted into an internet-connected PlayStation 3. No other aspect of the game is affected by the patch.God of War: Ascension launches exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on March 12, 2013. For more on the game, check out Joystiq's review.

What looks like a teaser trailer for 'Year of the Snake' DLC for Sleeping Dogs emerged online, along with a list of trophies. The trailer, which its poster says was plucked from the game's directory, doesn't show much that couldn't be ascertained from the name, but the trophy list does offer a bit more info. The Chinese crime cabaret involves a bomb squad you'll presumably join, and a bunch of cultists you'll definitely take down. There are also Evidence Collectibles to collect and give pride of place to in your Evidence Collection. When approached about the DLC, a Square Enix representative told us, "No comment."

  • Rage is getting 'The Scorchers' DLC soon, new trophies suggest

Rage is shortly receiving new DLC over a year after release, if a trophies listing is accurate. PS3Trophies.org reports ten new trophies are being added to id Software's shooter, five of them based around a new job path called 'The Scorchers.' Another trophy is for finishing the campaign on 'Ultra Nightmare difficulty,' suggesting the DLC includes a new difficulty level even tougher than plain ol' Nightmare setting. The trophies are backed up by a PEGI listing from earlier this year for 'Rage: The Scorchers,' content rated for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. id Software founder John Carmack has also said mod tools which were supposed to ship with Rage were coming to the game "soon." It's just speculation, but if the DLC is accurate it may coincide with their release. We've reached out to Bethesda for confirmation of the DLC.

  • Codemasters hires achievement bloggers to design achievements for Grid 2

Dan Webb is the editor-in-chief of both Xbox 360 Achievements and PS3 Trophies, two sites that have covered metarewards on the two major consoles for a few years now. But he's never actually helped write an achievement list, and so Codemasters is finally giving him that chance with Grid 2. Webb and the rest of his writers will not only create the achievements for the upcoming racing game, but will have a series of posts, videos, and other content showing off what actually goes into the process of giving away all of those gamerpoints."Codemasters have put their faith in us to work with them on creating the ultimate list," says Webb in the press release, "and we're looking forward to repaying that trust to design Achievements and Trophies with unique objectives that will put a smile on players' faces with each and every unlock." We're interested to see just what Webb and the developers create. Even if things don't work out, odds are they won't make the worst achievement list ever, right?

Several players are having trouble unlocking certain Medal of Honor: Warfighter achievements, according to the game's forum. Specifically, the "Global Warfighters" achievement, awarded for unlocking "a soldier from each unit, and the "Warchief" achievement, awarded for unlocking all soldiers in multiplayer, will not unlock when the requirements are met.The majority of the complaints seem to center around the Xbox 360 version of the game, though the problem has been reported on the PS3 version as well. For the moment, there doesn't appear to be a solution or workaround. We've contacted EA for comment.[Thanks, Brandon!]

Sony will be rolling out a new PlayStation 3 firmware update tomorrow, October 23. Update 4.30 only brings a couple of changes. First, the Trophies section (for some reason) is moving from the games section of the XMB to the PSN section. Furthermore, Trophies earned on your PlayStation Vita will now also be displayed on the PS3.Finally, Sony is retiring the Life with PlayStation service and, along with it, Folding@home. The Folding@home project, for those who don't recall, utilizes the idle processing power of personal computers and PlayStation 3 consoles to help further Stanford University disease research. Vijay Pande, Stanford's Folding@home research lead tells PlayStation Blog that the PS3 "was a game changer for Folding@home." The project, and by extension the contribution of PS3 users, has helped pave the way to "a new strategy to fight Alzheimer's disease" and potentially a viable drug. Those who wish to continue (or begin) supporting Folding@home may still do so via Windows, Mac or Linux.

The first downloadable expansion for Borderlands 2 is titled 'Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty', according to the game's updated trophy list. PS3Trophies noticed three extra Captain Scarlett trophies added to the game via yesterday's title update. The three trophies are for completing the "X Marks the Spot" mission, discovering all named locations in Oasis and the surrounding Pirate's Booty areas, and completing all Pirate's Booty side missions. This, along with information drawn from the game's PC source files by Gearbox forum users, suggests the DLC introduces new areas. We've reached out to Gearbox for further information on the DLC, and we'll update you as soon as we know more. Until then, this was the voice of the Mysterons, and as ever we know that you can hear us.

Kept you waiting, huh? The patch to add trophies to Metal Gear Solid 4 will be released in Japan this Monday, August 6. The patch also consolidates install times, preventing the annoying installation between chapters.Konami hasn't confirmed an exact date for North America yet, but did say it would arrive in "early August" on the PlayStation Blog. If you'd like to know what all the trophies are – and why not, you can spoil a game you played four years ago – they're listed after the break.

The Japanese "The Best" re-release of Metal Gear Solid 4 won't just be updated with Trophies. The listing on Konami Japan's "Konami Style" shopping site also reveals a new installation method allowing you to fully install the game, rather than seeing the install screen between every chapter. This update will be in both the re-release and the Trophy patch for existing copies. Konami's American Twitter account announced the patch and new version, which suggests that they will be released here as well.In other Metal Gear news, Konami's 25th anniversary site for the series is up, with information about the Tokyo event and pictures of recent Metal Gear items.

Soon you'll be able to play 2008's Metal Gear Solid 4 in a way that counts toward your all-important cumulative PS3 game score. According to an early report out of Famitsu, a Japanese budget re-release in August will be accompanied by the long-awaited patch to add Trophies to the game. The budget "The Best" version will have Trophy support included, but a concurrent patch will add it to existing copies.According to Andriasang's source, Kojima Productions will hold a Metal Gear anniversary event in Tokyo on August 30, during which Hideo Kojima will announce something new, related in some way to the data-sharing "Transfarring" feature found in Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Specifically, "Transfarring" was a test of part of the "vision" for this new game.Update: After a closer look at the Famitsu article, Andriasang reports that the arrival of the Trophy patch has not been explicitly tied to the August release of the budget version. However, since the budget re-release will support Trophies natively, it follows that the patch would be ready around the same time.Update 2: Konami's official Twitter account confirmed that a patch and a new game version are currently in the works.

  • Trophies suggest Batman: Arkham City getting Harley Quinn DLC

Perhaps the extremely curvy chunk of Batman: Arkham City featuring Harley Quinn simply wasn't enough for you, or maybe you just like your DLC with an extra splash of Fran Drescher-esque voice acting? We can't be sure, but you specifically will be happy to hear that 10 PlayStation 3 Trophies were dug up by PS3Trophies.org which reveal a yet-to-be announced DLC pack featuring Ms. Quinn. No other description is given for the content other than "Harley Quinn DLC," nor is release date or pricing info, though Robin is noted in one Trophy as a playable character. Moreover, that Trophy addresses an event known as, "Harley Quinn's Revenge," which sounds to us an awful lot like the potential name for the content. We've reached out to WB for more info, and will keep an eye on the sky for any Bat clues.[Thanks, Josh.]

  • Pocket Gamer: How to get Trophies in used Vita games

    02.29.2012

We've seen Sony's own tips and tricks for the Vita, but as the device ages (six days old already!) more and more will appear, as Pocket Gamer shows with its tutorial that explains how to renew trophy-earning functionality in used Vita games.Upon booting up a pre-owned Vita title, players will get a screen that reads, "You cannot earn trophies in this application. Only the first player to use an application can earn trophies. To earn trophies, you must link the Sony Entertainment Network account of the first player to use this application with the PS Vita system." Pocket Gamer says the following steps will render that warning useless: Go to the main menu and hold down the screen for two seconds, until little bubbles appear on the upper-right side of each game's icon. Hit the bubble you want and click "Delete." A screen reading "All data related to this application will be deleted" will pop up. Hit "OK." Load the game and you should be good to go.This process won't delete the previous player's trophies, Pocket Gamer adds.

Dark Age of Camelot's Valentine's Day event is still in full swing, but the devs over at Mythic Entertainment have plenty more in store for players. Stuart Zissu, DAoC's producer, stopped by the official site to give players a heads-up as to what they can expect in upcoming updates. For starters, the next phase of the ongoing live event will be coming sometime "in the next few months," and players are warned that the Pict encampments they've already encountered are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. On top of that, the devs will be adding a number of new titles throughout the year that center on the long-running title's 10th anniversary. Zissu adds that "there will also be new titles for the next phase of the live event" as well as a special trophy commemorating Dark Age of Camelot's 10 years of RvRvR action. For more information, including details on DAoC's first video contest, just click on through the link below and give the post a look.

The months leading up to a big blockbuster release have a natural flow and order to them: First a title is announced, then months (or years) later we see screens, then trailers, eventually a demo or beta, etc. It's a strange, beautiful process, much akin to watching a caterpillar transform itself into a colorful butterfly. Uncharted 3 has entered the final pupal stage of its metamorphosis, the "leaked trophies cocoon." Head on past the break for the full list of daring feats you'll be rewarded for come November 1.

We were as surprised as anyone to learn that Resistance 3's single-player campaign is compelling and well done, and that its multiplayer is engaging and fairly enjoyable as well, but so far that certainly seems to be the case. No one will know for sure until the xenophobic shooter's September 6 release, of course, but for now we'd go so far as to say that we're actually excited for the release of a Resistance game. Targeting the completionist lobe of our perfectionism cortex, Insomniac has released the title's official trophy list, concealed after the break. It gives some spoilerific hints as to which bugs we'll be killing and where, so those of you looking to start the game with a mind as pure as the driven snow should take heed.

As if saving your PS3 games to the cloud wasn't convenient enough, Sony's gone and automated the process for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The v3.70 software update offers an automatic sync option for trophies and game save states, giving members exclusive access to their gaming goods wherever they go. The firmware also packs a few additional features for non-paid users, adding a recommendation function to items in the PlayStation store, and a new "TV / Video Services" XMB category for Netflix, Hulu PLUS and VUDU apps. Sony's also thrown in a few 3D tweaks, with MPO format compatibility for photos, and support for Java-based special features and DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR audio output for 3D Bluray movie playback. Although the gaming giant hasn't announced an official date for the release, expect it to hit your home console soon. Update: Joystiq's reporting that the update has just gone live.

    08.09.2011

An upcoming PS3 firmware update will enable automatic syncing of Trophies to a player's online profile. Before everyone gets too excited, know that the feature is reserved exclusively to PlayStation Plus members. Another PlayStation Plus bonus: automatic online game saves will now be enabled. Upon first playing a game, players will be asked whether or not to enable automatic online saves for that specific title (otherwise, they can enable it from the XMB later). In the category of "everyone else," the update will add a new recommendation feature that will allow users to recommend specific PlayStation Store content to friends. A new "TV/Video Services" section will also be added to the XMB. The new category will house online video services like Hulu and Netflix. Videos purchased from the PlayStation Store, however, will still be found in the same "Video" section of the XMB. A handful of updates are also being added to allow for expanded capabilities when watching 3D Blu-ray movies as well. Firmware 3.7 is scheduled to launch "soon," so stay tuned.
