Evolio's 2.2-pound U9 to drop softly in December
We hadn't heard all that much about Evolio until this summer, when the Romanian company caught our attention with the Neura, a device it happily deemed the "most powerful Android tablet." The company has re-entered the scene with another bold claim, touting "the lightest notebook in the world." The 11.6-inch U9 is certainly on the smaller side of things, weighing in at around 2.2 pounds. Inside you'll find some rather netbooky specs, including a 1.6GHz Cedarview processor, 2GB of RAM and an SSD with either 64 or 128GB of storage. According to Evolio, the U9 is set for a December release.
Fido offers up Motorola's MOTOROKR U9
Merely hours after Motorola began selling its simplistic U9 through its own webstore, along comes Fido to give interested Canadians another option for procuring it. Starting right now, those enamored by that ghostly external display can grab one for just $75 on a 3-year contract, $175 with a 2-year agreement or a grossly overpriced $350 with no strings attached. Motorola U9 now available through MOTOSTORE
If, for whatever reason, you found yourself recently craving a Motorola U9 in gunmetal grey, today would be your lucky day -- assuming you live in the US and don't mind handing your credit card information over to the company's humorously labeled MOTOSTORE. The diminutive mobile, which includes 25MB of on board memory, a microSD expansion slot, 2-megapixel camera, integrated media player, stereo Bluetooth and a fanciful external display, is now available in an unlocked GSM flavor for $275.99. Oh, and if you're really after a different hue, expect pink and purple to show up shortly.
Hands-on with the Motorola U9
Why doesn't Motorola offer the aerodynamic U9 in the States? After spending a little quality time with a unit recently, we honestly have no idea. The way we see it, it's a potent alternative to the RAZR 2 V8 for anyone who wants the V8's MOTOMAGX-based innards and high-grade music capabilities in a slightly different package. We were especially impressed with the quality of the "floating" external display; Moto obviously put some thought into the graphics and animations used here, and they came out great. We'd be a bit concerned about the long-term resistance of the glossy plastic shell to scratching, though, which could ultimately end up clouding that display beyond recognition. Hands-on with Motorola's holiday wares: the U9 and RAZR 2 Luxury Edition
Though the CTIA's fall show tends to be light on fresh hardware, we were delighted to see that Moto came prepared with some examples of two of its larger announcements in recent memory: the posh RAZR 2 Luxury Edition and the U9 skipping stone clamshell. Both models were surprisingly visually stunning. The RAZR 2 Luxury Edition looked a little over the top from its press photos -- don't get us wrong, it still is over the top, but in a surprisingly attractive way. The gold accents actually look like gold (18 and 24 karat gold, to be specific), the exclusive patterned backside is actually functional by giving the handset a non-slip surface, and the reskined UI builds on the V8's already solid JUIX backbone. Meanwhile, the U9 (pictured) makes its first public appearance in a pair of colors, blending the original PEBL's design DNA with a few concepts borrowed from recent Sony Ericsson models. We think Moto picked the right ideas to crib, too -- the translucent covers and partially concealed external displays look pretty tight in this form factor. Click on for the visuals!%Gallery-9113%
Motorola makes PEBL-ish U9 official
It's real! Motorola has made official its latest PEBL-esque device -- though there's no actual PEBL branding to be found on this one -- the U9. Think of the U9 to the original PEBL what the V8 and V9 are to the original RAZR, rocking Motorola's "CrystalTalk" noise reduction tech, microSD expansion, and a 2 megapixel camera. Media's the focus here with support for syncing with Windows Media Player 11; WMA, MP3, AAC, AAC+, and AAC+ enhanced files are all good to go, while the stereo Bluetooth support and "floating" external display with touch sensitive controls certainly don't hurt. Look for it to hit in the fourth quarter of the year in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. No North American release plans have been outed at this point, but it's a quadband GSM / EDGE phone, so we'd expect to find its way onto importers' shelves (and probably Motorola's own online store) right quick.
Motorola's ROKR U9, U3 and W5 pictured / detailed
While whispers and supposed shots of Motorola's ROKR U9 have been around for a tick, the PEBL-icious handset -- along with the similarly styled U9 and the W5 clamshell -- are finally getting detailed. Reportedly, the U9 will tout a 1.4-inch 160 x 128 resolution OLED (externally), two-megapixel camera, GSM / GPRS / EDGE connectivity, a 1.8-inch QVGA screen (internal), microSD expansion slot, USB, Bluetooth, and "touch sensitive keys." The U3 looks to be an entry-level sibling with a less attractive external display and a VGA camera, while the ROKR W5 will purportedly include a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 1.9-inch 220 x 176 resolution display, 20MB of internal storage, a microSD slot, 96 x 85 pixel external screen, miniUSB, Bluetooth, A2DP support, and quad-band GSM connectivity. Better shots of the Motorola MOTOROKR U9?
Okay, look, we know the original PEBL had its fair share of detractors -- but seriously, this thing looks pretty neat, yeah? Following up on a previous rumor and accompanying picture, we're seeing more details now on Motorola's supposedly upcoming MOTOROKR U9. Czech site iDNES.cz reports the U9 is set to sport a QVGA primary display, stereo Bluetooth, 25MB of onboard storage with microSD expansion, and a 16.4mm thick case. If we had to venture a guess, we'd figure the internals are largely based on the V8 variant of the RAZR 2 on account of its massive external touch display and alleged EDGE radio sans 3G. Sucks, yeah, but at least that means the odds are good of it rocking four honest-to-goodness bands of service. Bring it on, Moto![Via Slashphone]
The PEBL lives: Motorola to add ROKR U9
Though the original PEBL didn't get quite the love Motorola may have liked (Maria Sharapova special edition notwithstanding), it seems they're looking to give it at least one more go with the upcoming U9 model. Presumably designed to slot in alongside the RAZR 2 V8 / V9 models, Phone Scoop reports that the U9 will be ROKR branded, indicating a strong music tie-in. Other details are sketchy, though there's speculation that the "9" designation in the model number indicates that 3G is in the cards; for Motorola's sake, we hope that's true.
