Super Smash Bros Wii U and Melee are two of the nine games already confirmed for this year's Evolution Championship Series. As revealed during last night's Twitch stream, the line-up for Las Vegas this July also includes returning games Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Killer Instinct, The remaining four games are new for this year, and they are Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, Mortal Kombat X and Tekken 7. Recent years have seen more games added closer to the event, though a roster of nine is already on the high end for an EVO championship. Whatever the full line-up proves to be, it's coming to the Bally's/Paris Las Vegas Casino, where the world's fighting game specialists will duke it out across July 17-19.

  • Nintendo sponsoring Apex 2015 tournament series

Nintendo will sponsor Apex 2015, a competitive gaming series that will include tournaments for every Super Smash Bros. title released on home consoles as well as games like Ultra Street Fighter 4, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Pokemon Omega Ruby & Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. Apex shared the news on Twitter, noting that Nintendo would help the series put on an "incredible" Smash Bros. event. Apex 2015's tournaments will run from January 30 – February 1, 2015 at the Clarion Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey. If you're unable to attend, you can still check the event schedule and tune into one of the Twitch channels that will be covering the event. Nintendo's sponsorship is a welcome gesture of embracing the competitive fighting scene, especially when considering its alleged attempts to shut down the Smash Bros. Melee division of EVO 2013. Nintendo did eventually give the go-ahead to feature Melee in the tournament as well as EVO 2013's streaming schedule, but it's nice to see the developer stepping up its support for third-party tournaments from the get-go. Today marks the debut of the Evo 2014 fighting game tournament in Las Vegas, but those who didn't book airfare to the City of Sin won't be entirely left out thanks to a bevy of broadcast streams covering all the virtual fisticuffs. Eight top fighting games are officially represented at Evo 2014: Ultra Street Fighter 4, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, The King of Fighters 13 and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Capcom's official "Capcom Fighters" stream on Twitch has you covered for all the Ultra Street Fighter 4 matches, while Shoryuken offers two streams to cover the remaining games: SRKEvo1 and the similarly-titled SRKEvo2. The official Twitch streaming schedule offers a full rundown of what games will be shown. Today is a dominated by Ultra Street Fighter 4, Tekken and Injustice, but tomorrow features the more esoteric King of Fighters, Killer Instinct and BlazBlue tournaments. [Image: Capcom]

EVO fighting game tournament founder Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar appeared on a recent episode of iPlayWinner's The Fray, where he revealed that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 would appear at this year's tournament. As we reported in September, EVO 2014 is slated to take place in Las Vegas from July 11 to July 13. As with last year, EVO 2014 will be streamed via Twitch. Though it's not terribly surprising to see the fan-favorite Tekken Tag Tournament 2 join the tournament roster, it's far from the only draw at EVO 2014. Other games appearing at the event include Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters 13 and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. Alongside the addition of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Cuellar also revealed that publisher Bandai Namco has signed on as a sponsor for EVO 2014. [Image: Bandai Namco]

  • EVO 2014 line-up announced, Super Smash Bros. Melee being discussed

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is one of six confirmed games for this year's Evolution Championship Series, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is a doubt. Event organizer Shoryuken revealed it's in "preliminary discussions" with Nintendo about featuring the GameCube brawler in the fighting game tournament, following the stir its inclusion caused last year. Melee was the eighth game to be included in last year's line-up, after it won a fan vote that raised $225,724 for breast cancer research. However, a few months after Nintendo moved to claim revenue on Let's Play videos featuring its games, the company requested Melee be removed from the EVO 2013 streaming line-up. The move was received with an immediate backlash, and Nintendo swiftly reversed its decision. The circumstances are different this time-around. For one, Melee is just another potential game in the line-up, not one voted for by fans with charity money behind it. Still, it'll be interesting to see which way Nintendo swings on approval this time, especially in the same year that a new Super Smash Bros. game is set to arrive on Wii U and 3DS. As for the rest, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, and Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma join Ultra Street Fighter 4 as newbies to the championships, while King of Fighters 13 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 return from last year's selection. The event itself takes place on July 11-13 at the LVH Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but if you can't make it to Nevada you can always tune in on Twitch. [Image: Shoryuken]

  • Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 delisted from Xbox Live

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has officially disappeared from Xbox Live. The news doesn't come as a surprise, given that the final date to purchase DLC on the platform announced by Capcom is today. The game is still available on PSN for Vita, along with its collection of DLC, but there's no available download for the PS3 version of the game. Conversely, the other game set for delisting, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, is still available on Xbox Live but is nowhere to be found on PSN. It's unknown just how long the game will still be available on Microsoft's service. It arrived on XBLA in late July 2009 and is priced at $14.99.

  • Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, MVC2 to leave XBLA/PSN, DLC on sale

If you were thinking about taking Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3's DLC for a ride, you might want to decide already - a Capcom Unity post announced a DLC sale and encouraged fans to snatch up content for the crossover fighter, which will be "leaving the PSN and XBLA stores." The post calls for players to pick up UMVC3 and Marvel vs Capcom 2 "before they go away," but the next sentence calls out MVC3 as the game which will depart with its younger, Ultimate brother. With the standard version of MVC3 unavailable on either store however, we're pretty sure that's a typo and that the announcement is related to MVC2. While the entry asks readers to "stay tuned" for sales info concerning XBLA, PSN users can perform a 50 percent off combo on the DLC of their choosing for UMVC3 content. December 17 will be the final day the DLC is available in the US, with the European PSN offering the sale until December 19. While sales for XBLA have yet to be specified, the post does list December 26 as a global final call for DLC for Xbox owners. The games themselves have remained at full price on Xbox Live - UMVC3 is $29.99, while MVC2 is $14.99. PSN users can currently purchase MVC2 at $7.49, or for $3.75 with PlayStation Plus.

When it's time for the year's Evolution Championship Series fighting game selections to be announced, normally the process shakes out like this: A post goes up on Shoryuken, the fighting game community cheers and/or jeers for a while, and then everyone gets back to practicing. This year, however, things are a bit different.Seven games have been announced as official selections, as per usual: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter X Tekken (ver. 2013), King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena. The eighth game shakes up some paradigms, being selected through an ongoing charity fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.Basically, players donate money to the BCRF in the name of whichever game they want to see in the final slot, be it Dead or Alive 5, Darkstalkers 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or any of the 13 other eligible titles. Whichever game's community raises the most money for charity before the end of this month will be selected as the final, official EVO 2013 selection.Donation links can be found here, so if you want to forcefully subject people to a global MLP: Fighting Is Magic tournament, you can do so for a good cause.

Another EVO Championship Series has come and gone, taking with it the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a community. EVO is the Super Bowl of fighting games, but also a cultural mecca for those who share the genre as their life's passion. This year's proceedings were punctuated by surprises, upsets and incredible displays of skill and technical prowess, perhaps more so than any EVO in recent memory. Last year's Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition champion, Fuudo, tied with three others for ninth place at this year's tournament, for instance. Conversely, Perfect Legend successfully defended his throne as Mortal Kombat champion, becoming the first person to retain their title since Daigo Umehara's SSF4 victory in 2010.Head on past the break for results of the seven major tournaments that took place over the weekend, along with videos of the Grand Finals for each game, courtesy of IGN. If you're pressed for time, allow us to make some recommendations: Watch the first rounds of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and SSF4:AE Ver. 2012 Grand Finals for two of the most exciting KOs of the weekend, and peep the King of Fighters XIII Grand Finals for the most excitable stream commentators in the entire world.

  • Latest UMvC3 costume pack contains mysterious, unexplained Nova outfit

    02.26.2012

Every time a new costume pack is released for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Capcom explains the often obscure sources for said costumes. The "Viewtiful Strange" pack that came out last Tuesday, for instance, contains a Doctor Strange variant from a 1960s comic-book subplot, among other esoteric digs. There is however one costume without an explanation, one that leaves our interests sufficiently piqued. Nova's new threads (as seen above) legally cannot be expounded upon, according to Capcom Unity, which means that the inspiration for this costume must come from a Marvel production that is currently unannounced. We know that Marvel will be making some sort of announcement during the SXSW Interactive festival in Austin next month, and while we're not willing to say that Nova will be getting his own game or anything, it's not beyond impossible for the two events to be related.

  • Missing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC arriving on Vita Feb. 28

    02.25.2012

One of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's biggest selling points on the Vita is the fact that all of the console version's DLC carries over; costumes, characters, the whole nine yards. Well, that was the plan, at any rate. So far, the Jill Valentine, Shuma-Gorath and Costume Pack 1 DLC add-ons have been missing on Sony's plucky little handheld. Thankfully, the issue is not permanent and should be resolved during the Vita's next weekly update on Tuesday, February 28. As it turns out, the fact that Jill, Shuma and Costume Pack 1 exist in both Ultimate MvC3 and regular ol' MvC3 threw a monkey wrench into the system, preventing the aforementioned content from making the jump from console to handheld.

Today, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received the first title update we've seen for a Vita game -- an update containing the free "Heroes & Heralds" mode. When I tried to load up the game to test online again, I was alerted to this fact, and then kicked out to the main menu.Having since completed the procedure and updated the game, I thought I would demonstrate how updates are applied on Vita games. Welcome to the future!

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. Here's a first: a Deja Review of a game that's already been Deja Reviewed. This time, it's the PlayStation Vita port of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a handheld version of the updated version of last year's crossover fighting game.Capcom did an amazing job on a technical level; in every way, this is the console game, playable on a portable device. However ... it's the console game, playable on a portable device. The reduction in size unfortunately adds some baggage.

Keep your cool, Mega Man fans -- as previously announced, that version of Mega Man X above still isn't a new character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Nope, it's just Zero dressed up in a Mega Man costume, one of the new looks seen in the "Weapon Expert" costume pack available now. Elsewhere in the pack, Devil May Cry's Trish gets a new costume for her "Gloria" look, Hawkeye gets a makeover from the time he spent in the Marvel Universe as "Ronin," and Taskmaster also gets a new look, from Udon Entertainment's comic art. Interested players (or anyone who just wants to pretend Mega Man is playable) can grab the pack right now for 320 Microsoft Points, or $3.99 on PSN.

Is it just us, or is the trailer above for the Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 uncommonly smooth? It makes a pretty convincing showpiece for the portable fighter, even if you do have to squint to see the tiny gameplay screen on the tiny Vita within the window.Kotaku noticed that the Vita version has additional "Ability Cards," which provide stat boosts in Heroes & Heralds mode, including X-Men's Nightcrawler, Green Goblin, and Ulik, a Thor villain we definitely didn't have to look up just now.%Gallery-146273%
