SanDisk pushes SDHC to 32GB
The bits, they just keep coming -- now that 16GB SDHC cards are old hat, SanDisk's gone and upped the ante with these new 32GB cards. That matches Toshiba's record, but you won't be able to get your hands on one until April, when they ship for $349. A 16GB version and a new 8GB Ultra II SDHC Plus with flip-out USB connecter will also hit in March for $179 and $99, respectively -- but you know you want the big'un, don't lie.
Sandisk to benefit Alzheimer's Association with purple flash storage
The success of the PRODUCT (RED) AIDS fundraising program has started to spawn imitators -- the Alzheimer's Association has picked purple as its "signature color" and SanDisk is first out the gate with a co-branded USB flash drive and SD card. The purple 2GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card and 2GB Cruzer Micro drive will retail for the same price as their non-disease-fighting counterparts, but SanDisk will donate $1 per unit to the Alzheimer's Association, up to a maximum of $1M. We're happy to see a good concept extended, but unlike the flashy (RED) devices, no one's ever going to see you flaunt that purple SD card while it's in your camera -- what will the fashionistas ever do?
SanDisk announces tiny SSD, 8GB M2, and bigger Ultra IIs
Sandisk just kicked out a quartet of announcements for IFA. First up, an 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card for use (primarily) in Sony Ericsson's cellphones expected sometime in Q4. Yeah, that's the world's highest capacity M2 card in case you're wondering. Also of significance is their new 2GB to 8GB uSSD 5000 Solid State Disks which measure just one-fourth the size of a 1.8-inch SSD. The new uSSD is meant for sub $250 PCs with SanDisk specifically calling out Intel's Classmate PC. We bet you'll find it bunged inside the Eee PC as well. Also announced are a $30 Multi Card ExpressCard adapter and new high-performance $80 4GB SDHC Plus and $160 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo cards from their Ultra II lineup. Hands-on with the Samsung SGH-U100 Ultra Edition II
A heck of a lot of phones pass through our grubby hands in the course of an average week, so it usually takes something of a minor miracle to get a rise out of us with a new handset. Well, Samsung, ya did it -- your crazy U100 is positively the most ridiculous feat of phone manufacturing we've seen to date. It's hard to accurately express with words or even pictures just how thin this thing feels in the hand. Whether that's a good thing, well... we reckon that's a matter of personal taste, but needless to say, we don't think this one would survive even a single smashing or bending unscathed (as one observer astutely noted, "this is a purse phone, not a pocket phone"). Despite its minimal girth, the Ultra Edition 5.9 sacrifices virtually nothing, offering A2DP, 80MB of onboard storage (no expansion slot, sadly), a 3.2 megapixel cam, and even TV out. The tri-band radio is a bit of a bummer, but we still found ourselves rocking out with four or five bars of signal strength virtually everywhere we went. SanDisk announces 4GB and 8GB Class 6 SDHC cards
Sure we've seen 4GB and 8GB Class 6 SDHC cards before -- Lexar's got a pair, as does Transcend -- but when it's SanDisk that steps up to the plate with new Ultra II and Extreme III models, well, that's certainly worth a mention. As we're all well aware by now, Class 6 cards have a minimum sustained write speed of 6MBps, though both the 8GB Ultra II and 4GB Extreme III easily surpass that, clocking in at 9MBps and 20MBps, respectively. Available in June -- along with the new 4GB EIII Memory Stick PRO Duo card -- the 4GB EIII will retail for $180, the 8GB UII will fetch $240, and both models will toss in a "free" MicroMate USB 2.0 reader.Read - Extreme IIIRead - Ultra II
SanDisk's 4GB Ultra II SDHC for performance photogs
So you've put down an order for a new still or video camera with SDHC slot, eh, now what? Do you pick up a regular ol' 4GB SDHC card from Toshiba, Panasonic, or SanDisk or maybe splurge on a fat Pretec for 8GB or 16GB of storage? Well SanDisk is here to tell ya (and we'll agree) that their new Ultra II SDHC Card is the ideal choice to record smooth video or capture multiple still photographs in rapid succession from that new cam with write speeds of 9 megabytes (MB) per second and read speeds of 10MB/sec. Yeah, it'll cost you $220 for those speeds, but hey, you get a "free" MicroMate SDHC/SD card reader in the kit when these drop next month. So what's it gonna be boy -- performance, capacity or the el-cheapo? Decisions, decisions.
