  • Drake advantage of a great deal on a PS3 Uncharted 3 bundle

To enjoy Uncharted 3, you need a highly developed sense of adventure, the ability to spot unorthodox paths through a chaotic landscape, the patience to stay cool during protracted firefights, and a PlayStation 3. For those first three, you're on your own, but Sony has a plan to help with the last one: a new Uncharted 3 hardware bundle, including a 320GB system, a copy of the game, and -- why not -- a month of PlayStation Plus access. Despite appearing in the picture, there's no mention of an included PS3 vertical stand. The bundle will sell for $299.99, the same price as a 320GB system by itself. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is out on November 1.

  • Uncharted novel arrives on Oct. 4, comic on Nov. 30

Nothing says "high-octane thriller" quite like "novelization." Del Rey books will publish the first Uncharted novelization, titled "Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth," this October. If you're not so much for diving into a full book, a more bite-sized adventure for Nathan Drake arrives in comic book form starting November 30 from DC Comics. Neither work will specifically play into the events of this winter's third Uncharted game for the PlayStation 3, rather seeking to tell side stories in the harrowing life of series protagonist Nathan Drake. It seems that the comic will potentially have Drake heading to a fictional city in the planet's core, while the book sends Drake to ... umm ... New York City. And Egypt and stuff. But, you know, not a city in the center of the planet.

  • Uncharted 3 and the sands of art

Artist Natalya Netselya has been creating sand art for almost five years, her talent evident as she recreates scenes from the upcoming Uncharted 3 using the micro-pebbles and a light table. Each piece of art by Netselya, like sandcastles in the sand, is wiped away and replaced with something just as impressive. Hmmm, sandcastles in the sand. Actually, forget that "artistic" music Sony decided to put with the above video. Mute that and let's get some Robin Sparkles up in this joint. You can find her chart-topper after the break.

  • Metal Gear Solid HD, Uncharted 3 themed DualShocks coming to Japan [update]

Sony is releasing two new DualShock 3 color schemes in Japan, in honor of two upcoming games. For the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker HD Edition, SCEJ has an "Urban Camouflage" model. Uncharted 3 gets a tan/brown DualShock with a print of Drake's ring. They both fit the theme of their games and all, but they're not nearly as amusing as the baseball DualShock. Japanese PS3 owners will be able to execute an on-site procurement of the Metal Gear controller by itself on November 17, for ¥5,500 ($71). The Uncharted 3 controller is bundled with the game, and will be available November 2 for ¥9,980 ($129). Update: The "urban camo" controller will be released in North America this November, as Shacknews reported last month. It's not being billed as a Metal Gear tie-in here.

Do you take breaks from long sessions with Uncharted 2 to wonder why you're so, so good at it? Perhaps your other hobbies include "being an on-air presence" and "having perfectly coiffed hair?" Then you're a shoo-in to participate in Spike TV's upcoming television "special" dedicated to this November's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. According to a listing that seeks show participants, you must be available in early October for taping, be a fan of adventure, or a "video game enthusiast," a "puzzle solver," or a "risk taker." Presumably, risk-taking adventurers with a taste for video games will be given first priority. In order to prove your worthiness for inclusion, shoot an email to Spike with a "link to a video, picture or paragraph explaining why you are the ultimate Uncharted fan who deserves to be featured on the show." And no, scaling the Spike TV corporate building and making your way to the company head's office undetected is not a good way to prove yourself, regardless of the theme.

The Uncharted 3 Collector's Edition is quite nice to look at. Naughty Dog gives you the opportunity to look very closely at it, while also looking closely at ubiquitous voice actor Nolan North. In the above video, North offers a detailed rundown of everything in the box, while showing off the unexpectedly impressive packaging. It ... it has drawers. Velvet-lined drawers. It's just one step away from the ultimate collector's edition, which will come with a huge bookshelf to help you store these enormous game boxes you keep buying.

You're more exciting than practically anything else coming this year. Your gameplay looks better than most other games' cinematics. You're elegant, you're classy and ... well frankly, Uncharted 3, it's all starting to come off a bit needy. What are you trying to prove with this new Gamescom trailer? That it looks really cool to punch a guy on a moving airplane? That your animations are just spectacular? No, that's not it, is it? No, you just want to remind us that you're just going to be the best, and you're not coming out until November. So, yes, Uncharted 3. We're dying inside. You're killing us with the slow, rusty knife of anticipation. There, we've said it, now can we please be left to alone to pine for you in peace?

The Interactive & Digital Entertainment Festival was held in Cannes in June; a retail-focused festival, publishers bring their games to sunny southern France in the hopes of attracting the attention of Europe's buyers. One way to do that: A sand sculpture! French marketing crew Urban Act were commissioned to recreate the already iconic image of Drake in front of the crashed plane in the desert to promote Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Note how they've got the workspace roped off, just in case someone's got a Godzilla game to promote.

Sony's presence at this year's San Diego Comic Con is, like Qwark's chest, large and complex. Beyond bringing major retail releases like Resistance 3 and Twisted Metal for attendees to play, the publisher is showcasing a variety of wares from PSN indies like thatgamecompany's Journey and Minority Games' Papo & Yo. The company is hosting several presentations on a handful of its games -- everything from Starhawk to Uncharted 3 -- along with with the chance to play a variety of unreleased PlayStation titles. If that weren't enough, the construction of a full Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One arcade cabinet specifically for SDCC 2011 should help to get you on board. Take an early peek at the cabinet in working order just below the break.

Sony lucked its way into one of the most effective methods of enticing users back to the PSN after all that unpleasantness. By offering PlayStation Plus access to all, the once-exclusive Uncharted 3 beta became open to anyone willing to accept their Welcome Back packages, and according to Sony, over "1.5 million unique players" have tried the beta out. The company announced this in its response to tonight's NPD sales data (which is forthcoming). It should come as no surprise that unrestricted access to a free, early chunk of one of the PS3's biggest holiday titles would turn out to be popular.

The Uncharted 3 beta is only open until July 14, but Naughty Dog and Sony aren't done adding goodies to the game. The final additions will be made to the beta tomorrow, July 10, including a never-before-seen map, Yemen, and players' first chance to play the co-op campaign. This is also the final week to earn beta rewards, which include the Treasure Hunter's Starter Pack and in-game cash on day one. Sony announced that over 1 million unique players have taken part in the Uncharted 3 beta -- if you haven't, join the crowd today to play the co-op campaign tomorrow. You sheep.

Europe has received another sizable PSN update this week. The highlight is undoubtedly the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta. Two full retail titles were added as well, namely Red Faction: Armageddon and the aging Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. On the bite-sized downloadable front are Sega Rally Online Arcade, Spelunker HD and Alien Zombie Mega Death. Cohort Chess has also been added to PlayStation Minis, while Gex: Deep Cover Gecko joins PSOne Classics. DLC has been added for several games, including Super Street Fighter IV, Hyperdimension Neptunia, DiRT 3, Mortal Kombat and WWE All Stars. Head over to the PlayStation Blog Europe for the full rundown.

[Update: Yet again, the beta codes were snapped up faster than you can say "Victor Sullivan has the world's finest moustache." For those who didn't luck out, just remember that everyone will be able to get into the beta beginning July 5. Hang in there!] Alright, our Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception beta code delivery system isn't quite perfect. In order to pull out a PSN code from our replenished supply, you'll have to click on that blue button below ... and then click on another button once you reach the next page. You see that demolished plane in the image above? That's basically the state of our user interface. We trust you'll endure the incredibly painful process (reminder: TWO CLICKS) and let us know what you think of Naughty Dog's explosive test run. In the meantime, we'll get to work on Code Delivery System 2.0: Printing out every beta code and slipping them into semi-delicious fortune cookies.

The staff at Naughty Dog don't stop working at two o'clock, they just start playing. A company-wide shootout happens every day, testing the multiplayer modes in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and funneling data into the never-ending tuning process that any online action game must endure. And when the scheduled war is over, participants can march over to game designer Robert Cogburn's desk, ready to lament the changes made to the firing rate of the sniper rifle. It was great, Rob, but now it sucks. "When it comes to multiplayer, everyone's opinion is valid," Cogburn says. "I don't like the way this gun feels. Okay, tell me why. I love the way the gun felt. Alright, tell me why. To find that grey is such a black art, and I'm still working on it right now."

[Update: That didn't take long! We're all out of codes. If you didn't get one, don't despair! Remember, the beta will be open to the public on July 5 ... or just get that free PlayStation Plus membership and download the beta through there. See, it's not so bad.] If you signed up for that free PlayStation Plus account (thanks, Welcome Back program!) or snagged a copy of inFamous 2, you may already be waist-deep in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception multiplayer beta goodness. Oh, you were waiting for someone to hand you a free beta key, in exchange for very little to no effort on your part? Well friend, we like the cut of your jib and, just because you were honest with us, we're going to repay your lethargy with a free beta code. Click that blue button below and be whisked away to our incredible key distribution experience. Okay, confession time: There's a second button you'll have to click there, then you'll need to write down the key that Sony generously provided, and take it to your PlayStation 3 where you'll punch it in on the top right of the PlayStation Store and, voila, Bob's your uncle.

  • PSN Tuesday: Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta is here

Today's PSN update marks the beginning of the PlayStation Plus-exclusive Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta. However, PlayStation Plus membership was offered as part of the "Welcome Back" package, meaning the "exclusive" beta is not so exclusive. In fact, it's essentially open to everyone using the PS Store (if they've activated those free memberships -- you only have until July 3 to do so), so there will be a lot of people rushing to download the beta. Basically, what we're saying is that something given away after a PSN outage is about to knock the PSN out again, jeopardizing your ability to get Beyond Good and Evil HD. Check out all the DLC for this week after the break. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)
