The tablet landscape is changing rapidly. It's now relatively trivial to find a cheap, full-featured Windows slate, and we've seen a number of smaller models that still manage to pack plenty of power. In light of those shifts, our tablet buyer's guide looks very different this winter. Dell and Nokia are on the list for the first time, and Windows tablets sit shoulder-to-shoulder with their mobile OS rivals. We've even brought back an older Nook that's received a new lease on life thanks to updated software and a significant price cut. Whether you're looking for a productivity machine or just something to watch movies on, we've got a tablet that should fit the bill.

And then there were... four? Once considered a novelty, 8-inch Windows tablets are now everywhere: Lenovo has one; so does Toshiba; and Acer is already on its second. Not to be left out, Dell recently started shipping the Venue 8 Pro, which costs about the same as its competitors ($300), but adds an active digitizer for pen input (psst: The stylus is sold separately). Like most of its rivals, too, it makes use of a quad-core Intel Atom processor promising fairly long battery life, and enough power to handle some lightweight desktop apps, in addition to whatever you might download from the Windows Store. Unfortunately, we can't really name our favorite 8-inch Windows tablet until we review a few more of them, but for now, we can safely say the Venue 8 Pro offers some decent value for the money. Read on to see why.

Ever since Dell dropped the surprise announcement that it would revive its Venue brand, we've been looking forward to getting our hands on the company's new line of Windows 8.1 tablets. That time has come with today's launch of two devices: the Dell Venue 8 Pro and the Venue 11 Pro. Their arrival confirms the end of Dell's dabble with Windows RT -- and the discontinuation of its XPS 10 tablet -- heralding a new "portfolio" of mobile devices that the company believes will meet the needs of enterprise customers. Do Dell's buttoned-down tablets offer more than the competition? Join us after the break for a closer look.
