Congratulations DISH Network DVR owners, you no longer have to be jealous of your DirecTV brethren, now that DISH Remote Access lets you schedule recordings from anywhere. All that's necessary is a broadband connected ViP DVR like the ViP® 722k, ViP® 722, ViP® 622 and ViP® 612. Got an attached Slingbox (or, in the future, SlingLoaded ViP 922 HD DVR?) Then you can watch recorded shows from anywhere too via the SlingGuide we peeped at CES. That's really all there is, we could whine about this upgrade taking so long but really, it seems better to just go ahead and try out the new features immediately. Now, about that Sling app for iPhones...%Gallery-40979%

  • DISH Network's forthcoming DVRs get detailed: hints of Sling all over

Although DISH Network's previous quarter wasn't anything to write home about, it sounds like the satcaster (EchoStar, technically) isn't going to allow its set-top line to grow stale in the process. During the recent Team Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, DISH's CEO Charlie Ergen reiterated that it would be beaming out "more than 100 national HD channels" by the end of 2008, and he also made mention that the EchoStar 11 satellite would lift off in July. Most interesting, however, was all the talk about the new STBs. The forthcoming ViP 722 will be the first HD DVR from the outfit with loads of Sling technology built in -- not too shocking considering the recent acquisition. Additionally, the box is said to feature an all new interface and the ability to browse to (select) websites, double as a SlingCatcher and even handle Clip & Sling duties. There's plenty more where this came from, so be sure and hit the read link when you've got some spare time for reading.[Via GizmoLovers]

We've always had an inkling that Archos was making some content moves around its Generation 5 PMPs, and the latest is pretty sweet: a plug-in download from Archos.com now enables the 605 and 705 to transfer shows and movies directly from Dish VIP622 and VIP722 DVRs over USB 2.0. There's no mention of pricing in the press release, so we're assuming it'll be a free download, and the plug-in should be available "today," although we're not currently seeing it. You know, with the Sling relationship and now this deal with Archos, it kind of seems like Dish actually wants customers to view its content as they see fit -- any of the other satellite or cable companies paying attention here?[Warning: PDF read link]

  • Dish Network unveils black ViP722 HD DVR

Hot on the heels of Dish Network's newest software update comes a brand new HD DVR, which actually doesn't differentiate itself all that much from its predecessor. The ViP722 will delight those looking for a black unit to match their eerily dark component setup, but it reportedly runs on the very same software as that found in the ViP622. Additionally, users will find a 500GB hard drive within, which offers up 55-hours of HD recording space, 350-hours of SD, or any combination of the two. As expected, newcomers to Dish can snag the ViP722 gratis, and while it's not mentioned how much existing subscribers will be forced to cough up in order to upgrade, there's not a whole lot here that can't be matched by just plugging in your own external HDD to that still-capable ViP622.[Via DBSTalk]
