Heatworks' Duo carafe is instant kettle meets stylish Brita
We're all thinking it: Waiting for the kettle to boil is so 2018. But that hot minute of idly poking Insta while you await your coffee fix could be eliminated if Heatworks has anything to say about it. The company has created Duo, a "carafe" that heats water, instantly, as you pour it. It may look like a stylish Brita filter -- and filtration is part of the package -- but thanks to the graphite electrodes in its upper half, water is heated within 1°F of your desired temperature as it leaves the vessel.

Four years ago, the Flint water crisis began when officials switched its source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Its more corrosive water caused dangerous levels of lead from old pipes to leach into the city's drinking water, poisoning residents. Now, after fighting with officials just to get the problem recognized in 2015, many residents still don't trust the city's tap water. Into the fray steps Elon Musk, fresh off of his submarine-building exploits, responding to a tweet with this promise "Please consider this a commitment that I will fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels. No kidding."
Do you need a $249 'smart' water filter?
There seem to be three mindsets when it comes to the water we drink. You can care a lot about it and buy bottled; care a lot about it and have a water filter; or you just drink from the tap. Maybe it's because I fit into the third category that water filters don't really seem like a growth market to me. A casual survey of my colleagues tells me there are lots of people that do care, though. Cove is built for them. The pitch is simple: Our natural water is full of crap. Harmful chemicals, heavy metals, pathogens. You name it; it's in there. Most filters do a good job at removing chlorine and other elements, but according to some studies, many introduce bacteria into your water. Cove's new filtration system apparently solves that issue, and, this being 2015, it's wrapped up in a "smart" housing that talks to your phone.
