One great thing about live streams of The International and LCS championships – you can read awesome articles between the matches. Welcome to Barely Related, a conversational Friday column that presents the non-gaming news stories that we, the Joystiq staff, have been talking about over the past week. And no, we're not stopping our focus on industry and gaming news. Think of this as your casual weekly recap of interesting (and mostly geeky) news, presented just in time to fill your brain with things to discuss at all of those weekend shindigs. Grab a fresh drink, lean back in your armchair, and get ready to talk nerdy with us.

The song White and Nerdy probably doesn't need much introduction. It's by Weird Al, if you need to look it up. However, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that most of our readership has some familiarity with the lyrics. I wouldn't even be surprised to find out someone has the lyrics tattooed on his or her body. (And if you do, please send pictures.) Gunther has created a machinima to go along with the song, which makes this a perfect blend of nerdy and White and Nerdy. The upside is that this is a great head start into the world of machinima. The downside is that now I have the song stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.

We can only figure that it is thanks to some strange combination of Mythic and Weird Al that today's Warhammer Online One Shots came in to us as it did. Why would we say that? Well, this is perhaps the first time we've had anyone write us and tell us that they were purposely trying to sound "nerdy." We were amused too. Here's what today's contributor, Neurose, sent in: My name is Neurose and I play on the Open-RvR server Dark Crag. This is a shot of me [on my] Warrior Priest with my friend Knyte the Bright Witch mounted on our noble steeds. This description is meant to sound as nerdy as possible, and I think I succeeded in doing so. Enjoy. Have you found a funny pop-culture reference in your favorite game? Perhaps you'd just like to see if you can spur us into making one with your screenshot. If you're playing an MMO, you're invited to send some in! Just grab some screenshots of your daily adventures and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your character's name/server/guild and a quick description of what we're seeing. Yours could be next.%Gallery-9798%

Relmstein has a great little roundup of the best WoW machina he's seen (Big Blue Dress is a classic of the form), and while I've seen most of them, I've never seen this terrific (Model Viewer-powered) take on a wild Weird Al song. There's a little bit for everybody in this one-- Onyxia shows up, lots of sweet endgame gear makes an appearance, and someone's been playing with the fake item generator. But even if you've seen this before, it's worth another look. Great work.

  • Weird Al: "Don't Download This Song"

Love or hate him, Weird Al has unquestionably cranked out some of the most notable humor and satire of the late 20th - and now 21st - centuries. The Digital Music Weblog (a sister site) has discovered Mr. Weird is at it again with "Don't Download This Song," a tongue-in-cheek anthem about the dark road of lying, cheating and stealing that file sharing can lead down. Weird Al is using a small marketing site to pimp the song, complete with a music video and a download link (yes, of course it's free), as well as the upcoming album the song is featured on.Grant at TDMW cites a favorite line of Christopher Springman at Public Knowledge: "Cause you start out stealing songs/then you're robbing liquor stores/and selling crack/and running over schoolkids with your car." Personally, I don't think the record labels care where you're getting your cash, just as long as you use it to pay their outlandish monopoly prices.Feel free to grab the song, as the RIAA can't nail you for downloading this one. At least, I think.
