Windows 10 may soon tell you which apps are using your microphone
Microsoft is testing some privacy and notification features in its latest Windows 10 Insider preview for Fast Ring users. A previous build added an icon to the notification area that tells you when your microphone is in use, and the newest update will let you see which app is using it when you mouse over the icon. If more than one app is using your mic, the icon will tell you how many. It's a useful privacy enhancement, especially if you're concerned about eavesdropping.
Windows 10 keyboard offers emoji suggestions in latest preview
Windows 10 Insiders in the Fast Ring were the first to try out Microsoft's emoji 5.0 bonanza in June, before support rolled out widely with the Fall Creators Update. And, the tech giant is bundling yet more emoji goodness in its latest preview, which also packs Microsoft Edge improvements. The new build 17046 brings with it emoji suggestions on the keyboard, with support for over 150 languages.
Windows 10 Insiders can use Ink to draw on photos
Microsoft is developing some cool new features for the Windows Ink Workspace, and Insiders are getting the first look. Insiders in the Fast ring who install the latest Windows 10 Preview for PC and Mobile will be able to doodle and write on their photos with Ink. They simply have to tap the Draw option while viewing a picture in the Photos app to bring up Workspace's toolbar. There they can choose from the pen, the pencil and all the new calligraphy pen tools.
Cortana for Windows 10 arrives in four more countries
Microsoft's making good on its promise to release Cortana for PC in more locations after a limited launch. Now, the voice assistant is available as an optional download in Nihongo for Japan, as well as in English for Australia, Canada and India, but only if you're running the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build. According to the Insider program's spokesperson, Gabe Aul, the Indian version isn't quite finished yet, and it's expected to get "an improved voice" -- whatever that means -- sometime this September. Cortana for PC was originally made available only in a handful of countries, including the US, when Windows 10 came out, as Redmond opted to tailor it for each location. After this tour, Microsoft is expected to prep the voice assistant and send it on its way to Brazil and Mexico, as well as release a French version in Canada.
