  • WoW Moviewatch: We Wish You a Murloc Christmas

Some of the best holiday ideas are simple, pure, and uncomplicated. These ideas are also inevitable, just like We Wish You a Murloc Christmas. When I fired up this video for the first time, all I could think was, "Yes, a murloc humming We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Why has this only now been created?" The machinima doesn't have a lot going on, but I'm not sure you can really expect whiz-bang action sequences here. It is a murloc standing in Ironforge, humming a song. But, again, really, what more do you need? From those of us here at WoW Insider, we wish you a Murloc Christmas. Interested in the wide world of machinima? A long, long time ago, Wowcrendor released How to Win at PUGs and Gearscore. How long ago? It was May 2010. It's hard to believe that it's already been well over a year! The video talked about some of the basic archetypes we encounter that make joining PUGs frustrating. Well, the master of sarcasm picked the series back up and released How to Win at PUGs 2. Billy continues to be curious about the world of PUGs and seeks out his mentor's infinite wisdom. As a result, we get a guided tour of the other archetypes you encounter in the game. I almost want to turn this video into a bingo game of PUGs, just to see how it turns out. For those of you who follow Wowcrendor closely, don't worry. The Go Guy does make a return. Blog Monkey get up in morning. Blog Monkey get up, get coffee. Blog Monkey write post about Spiffworld Code Monkey, which is much better parody than what Blog Monkey do. Code Monkey is an older video, of course, but it's been long enough since we've had it around that many new readers might not know it. The song is obviously performed by JoCo, while the video itself is created by Spiffworld. This is the sad, angsty tale of a code monkey who crushes on the local night elf. C'mon, we've all been there. Don't worry, it turns out all right in the end. Thanks to Robin Torres for the rerun suggestion. She calls Code Monkey "my first machinima love." Work warning: This video has some adult themes and scantily clad video game characters. With Christmas ticking closer every day, we're starting to see some new holiday-themed machinima. We're also seeing the inevitable creep toward SW:TOR come around. It makes sense that someone would merge the two into a single machinima. Kick back with a cup of coffee and watch a SW:TOR and a WoW player battle it out for which game will enjoy Christmas superiority. Gamebreaker knocked this out of the park; we can expect this to be a favorite for WoW and SW:TOR fans both. Absolutely. Interested in the wide world of machinima? When it's a slow, rainy day around WoW Moviewatch headquarters (as it is), we occasionally look back to the inspiring machinima of yesterday. The Device Has Been Modified is one such video. The song is from Victims of Science from the game Portal. Baron Soosdon took that inspiration and created an entire world for his protagonist to enter, explore, and shoot up. Using a mechano-strider to personify the computer's voice was a particularly brilliant stroke of inspiration. All in all, The Device Has Ben Modified is still one of our favorite machinimas. Work warning: Mild cursing in this video, especially near the end. This is an odd combination of music, voice tracks, and raid video. Take the time to check it out, though; Molly did a surprisingly good job of pulling it all together when you consider it's her first video. It was fun to watch, reminiscent of the best parts of the Firelands, and the voice bits go well with the music. Molly created this video as an homage to her raid group. What I especially liked were the layers of player dialogue and WoW's acting. I think this is an interesting genre that could be further developed. If you're not sure about the song, alt-tab and do some web browsing while you let it play. The effect is relaxing while still engaging. My hat's off to Molly. (As a note, she did use Deadmau5's song for a background track.) Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! It's been a while since we've taken another look at Major League Azeroth, by AFK Players. If you want to talk about a unique, amazing vision for WoW machinima, you don't need to go any further than here. I'm blown away by how contemporary the video still looks. Granted, part of that is probably that WoW's graphics haven't been massively updated; the game looks a little better, but we still have basically the same visual elements. So when we look at a video from 2009, we don't instantly think, "OMG, what was this drawn in MS Paint or something?" I'm not really a huge baseball fan, but not much about Major League Azeroth is really about baseball per se. Take the time to check it out and let us know what you think. If nothing else, Wowcrendor is certainly prolific. He clearly takes his machinima seriously and keeps himself on a rigorous, disciplined production schedule. This is the second movie from Wowcrendor this week. And while we run the risk of turning the column into Wowcrendorwatch instead, we do love seeing what Wowcrendor is doing. In Orc vs Wild: Northrend, Boar Thrills encounters the challenging terrain in Northrend. Using the natural terrain, fauna, and condors of the land, Boar continues onward throughout the frozen land. Wowcrendor uses this video to poke fun at Bear Grylls and all the tropes and memes about the survival lifestyle. It's an amusing video, though it does help to be familiar with the genre. • WoW Moviewatch: The Archaeology Song

    by

Archaeology can be one of the most frustrating experiences in the game. You spend hours digging around in the ground, desperately searching for just the right relics to create cool in-game items. No guarantee exists that you'll ever get the stuff you want, but you just keep plugging away ... and away ... and digging for what feels like forever. It's no surprise that someone would create a song about that frustration. The Archaeology Song is a ballad of hatred and remorse, dedicated to the endless hours spent swinging a pike at the dirt. Fjofjo did a good job of making the song ironic. It sounds like a dirge of tears, but it's pretty clear Fjofjo loves the game. The real-life costume is suitably hilarious, and the whole thing comes together well. Good luck out there, archaeologists. Indiana would be proud! Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: World of Warcraft Commercial Parody

I tell a joke around my house. I used to be thin and svelte, enjoy social interaction, and even occasionally get a tan. Then I embraced the hot new workout program known only as Body by WoW, and all that changed. That's a joke, of course, and not really true. Still, those of us who look back on our lives before embracing Azeroth can empathize with Wowcrendor's World of Warcraft Commercial Parody. The whole painful nostalgia of life before WoW is underscored by The Go Guy. Yup. We play WoW and it changed our lives ... so that we could listen to The Go Guy in dungeons. I suppose there are worse ways to spend your time, but I do wish he'd shut up longer than a few minutes. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Jaina's Clover Story

    11.25.2011

Jaina Proudmoore isn't always the most respected lore figure in WoW. I definitely tend to be on the hater side of the Jaina fence; it bothers me that she tends to respond to men's actions, rather than initiate actions of her own. Still, Jaina is definitely an important person in the game; she's central to many of the plots that drove The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. Inspired by a fictional drama created by Korean artist Charalue, Lohaf created this amazing video called Jaina's Clover Story. Whether you like Jaina or not, take the time to watch this video. The art and music both bring a sense of haunted longing to the story. Overall, it's just a gorgeous video. The editing and effects were created by Lohaf, and the art and story belong to Charalue. The subtle art of choosing your character's name has confounded WoW players for years. WoW Insider has even tackled the subject itself. Thankfully, Wowcrendor is picking up the gauntlet and answering the naming challenge with this video guide, Picking Your WoW Name. While he obviously touches on traditional rogue names like StabYourFace and StabbingLots, Wowcrendor also address the use of accents and non-English characters. The WoW community loves coming up with interesting twists on names, so maybe this video will help. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! • WoW Moviewatch: Hallow's Dream

    11.23.2011

This movie is a little old. I nearly didn't run it because of timeliness issues; after all, Halloween and its in-game equivalent was nearly a month ago. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, for goodness's sake! But then I watched the video and knew I had to feature it. SilverLetomi and Tyrannothefirst did an amazing job with Hallow's Dream, and I felt it needed to be seen. The song is obviously well performed, and the machinima is fantastically spooky for a Hallow's End video. I definitely like the rock and roll angle, since guitars can be few and far between in contemporary machinima. The team picked out some awesome visuals to illustrate the action, leaving us with a comprehensive, fun video. Pardon the delay on this Hallow's End video, but take the time to kick back and enjoy the fun. Then go eat some turkey tomorrow. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We just had a video last week about Alliance pride, so let's take a look at the other side of the fence today. Forever Forsaken is a tribute video featuring dozens of undead characters. You'll probably recognize some of the names featured in Quixotica's film, and you'll definitely meet a few new Forsaken. Forever Forsaken is a beautiful, moody video, although it's hard to follow any kind of plot through it all. I'm not sure that matters. Forever Forsaken is so gorgeous to watch that you really focus on images and animation, without much thought for narration. The music does a good job of underscoring the introspective themes while still highlighting little moments of humor. Ultimately, Forever Forsaken is an impressive piece. Congratulations to Quixotica on another hit. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? • WoW Moviewatch: Epic Eats: Booze Clues

    11.21.2011

It might seem a little late in the year for Brewfest videos, but this week is Thanksgiving. Having family descend on your home is the only event of the year that rivals Brewfest in making you reach for a stress-relieving brew. So in my opinion, Bullworth's timing is just great. Epic Eats: Booze Clues provides dozens of jokes in a steady, chill format. Most of my favorite gags come toward the end, but I loved the wolpertinger the moment it came on screen. Usually, that echoing voice effect is reserved for Arthas or death knights. Having that voice effect come from a cute little wolpertinger seemed deliciously ironic to me. This video is fun, and it's worth the time to check it out. Don't forget to leave a comment on YouTube, an important step toward letting creators know what you think of their work. So, you've had a bad day. And you want to sing a sad song just to turn it all around. That's OK -- the Obsidian Brand has your back. They've created a parody of Daniel Powter's catchy tune called Bad Raid. You can probably see how the lyrics would go right away. The animation and vocals were both incredibly compelling in this video. They felt a little random to me at first, but as I settled into the rhythm of the song, the progression of the graphics became more smooth. And since we can all empathize with having a surprisingly horrible, horrible raid, I think we can all identify with the video just fine. Interested in the wide world of machinima? With Illidan and Arthas both defeated for the foreseeable future, the Alliance is finding that the warmonger Hellscream has stirred the Horde to violence. At least, that's how the story to this Alliance recruitment video goes. Your opinion may vary. I'd like to say this video stirs Alliance pride, but I think it ends up feeling more like a parody of those old World War II recruitment ads. That's probably part of the point, though. It was interesting seeing the old Alliance armor and PvP gear making a comeback. All in all, this public service announcement is a lot of fun to watch. Ultimately, I was pretty excited to see an Alliance-themed video. For better or for worse, most machinima definitely has a strong Horde bent. Seeing Varian's team get a little love was nice. • WoW Moviewatch: Wowcrendor's Compilation of Amazing

Can you believe that Wowcrendor has been on YouTube for nearly three years? In that time, he's earned nearly 65,000 subscribers and created almost 200 videos. That's one heck of a track record, no matter how you measure it. In all this time, Wowcrendor has never put together his own compilation or retrospective video. Since that kind of thing is mandatory, he created Wowcrendor's Compilation of Amazing. This video is nearly 8 minutes of clips, gags, and funny voices from man behind Billy. If you enjoy Wowcrendor, take the time to kick back and revisit some old favorites. And swing by his channel and congratulate him on his longevity; my hat's off to you, mate. Romire's new video, Broken Hearted, is actually a remake of a much earlier machinima. He's done a lot to clean up and improve the video. There's some new music, a new scene, and a retailored ending. Most importantly, he repaired the lag issues that destructively plagued the original. This new video is a vast improvement over Romire's first attempt; compare it against the original and you'll quickly see the differences. The animation is much smoother and the world is well served by losing the glow-in-the-dark subtitles. I also feel Romire's new music choices are stronger; the music in the first version felt a little random, while the new soundtrack is definitely more thematic. Has he lost his mind? Can he cast or is he Blind? OK, forgive the short lyrical outburst, but I couldn't help it. While Iron Gnome by Glory Productions is obviously based on Iron Man the movie, I can't help but think of Uncle Ozzy singing along. The animation and graphics in this machinima have been exceedingly well handled. Glory Productions did a great job of translating the look of the Iron Man movies into something you might find in WoW, and the plot is quick, fun, and to the point. I guess it was inevitable that someone would turn Tony Stark and his signature armor into a WoW parody, and nothing's better than a gnome to run around in powered armor. Iron Gnome gets two thumbs up just for being sheer awesome. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch!
