New year, same simple pleasures - Shockingly, it turns out that saving money in 2015 is just as fun as it was in 2014! In recognition of this truth, Xbox Marketplace's existing, week-long New Years deals have been extended until January 6, providing a range of savings across the Xbox One and Xbox 360 libraries. We've noticed discrepancies when checking for sale prices between console and browser-based store views however, so keep that in mind as you explore. The sale's highlights include $44.99 price tags for Destiny and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on both platforms, Alien Isolation for $29.99 on Xbox One ($33.49 on Xbox 360), Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition for $39.99 and Forza Horizon 2's Day One Deluxe Edition for $67.99. The Telltale Games Collection for Xbox One is also 50 percent off ($55), though despite Major Nelson's related post listing it as a general offer, that price is only available to Xbox Live Gold members. If none of the above strike your interest, perhaps you'll find something by browsing the sale in its entirety. You do own The Orange Box and Red Dead Redemption by now though, don't you? Let he who is without wonder cast the first stone, for we support the Brony community and wish to inform them of Xbox Avatar gear from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The Avatar clothing offerings include backpacks as well as with individual hoodies to wrap your avatar in the skin of Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy and Rarity. Yes, the hoodies can be worn by male and female avatars. There's also a Rainbow Dash pet, which we've posted a clip of above. The hoodies are priced at $2 (160 MSP), the Rainbow Dash pet is $4 (320 MSP). This is a far more innocent use of the My Little Pony crew, as compared to the time they learned Fighting is Magic or attacked Skyrim.

A plethora of Square Enix games and DLC for the Xbox 360 are currently available on the Xbox Marketplace for 50 percent off. Until the recent ultimate deals, The Xbox Marketplace has generally had laughable "deals." See, we couldn't even use that word without putting it in quotation marks. As of late, however, the Xbox Live Marketplace is stepping up its game and wandering into Steam-esque style sales. There are a couple exceptions to the 50 percent discount, with Deus Ex Human Revolution at $14.99 (60% off), Kane and Lynch 2 at $9.99 (25% off) and Sleeping Dogs for $19.99 (44% off). The sale will conclude on March 18. Check out the full list of cost augmentations after the break.

  • Microsoft local currency pricing on Xbox Marketplace items an 'error'

Microsoft states local currency options on the Xbox Marketplace that showed up yesterday were a "display error." SaveandQuitGaming caught the real money options early in the day, which also appeared on the European marketplace as well."Today, a few Avatar items appeared with an option to purchase with local currency, instead of Microsoft Points," a company spokesperson told Joystiq. "This display error doesn't signal a change in payment options, but rather an error in how the offers were configured in our services which resulted in an inconsistent experience. It is in the process of being resolved."Initially it appeared this conversion was the beginning of the rumor from earlier this year that Microsoft would do away with its space bucks in favor of real currency. But, that simply seems to not be the case at this time.

  • Mass Effect 3 DLC 'From Ashes' drifts down to Xbox Marketplace

BioWare has let slip a batch of Mass Effect 3 DLC on the Xbox Marketplace, titled From Ashes. This is presumably the same DLC as the rumored "From Dust" installment, which at least one GameStop customer may now need to get a refund for. Dust and ashes are two very different things, after all, but we bet any name switching came to avoid possible confusion with 2011's From Dust (if it wasn't a GameStop typo to begin with). From Ashes will cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Mass Effect 2 included the squad member Zaeed as free DLC in new copies, and From Ashes could very well be a new iteration of this format. For a brief description of the DLC (now with 100 percent more spoilers!) read on:

  • Xbox Marketplace: RE6 features 6-player online co-op, 8-player online multi [update]

The Xbox Marketplace listing for Resident Evil 6 appears to contain some exceedingly juicy and entirely unannounced secrets about Capcom's upcoming thriller. If the listing is to be believed, Leon and Chris' latest adventure will include 2-player couch co-op, 6-player online co-op and 8-player "online multiplayer," which we're assuming will be some sort of group Mercenaries exercise. What's even more astounding is all of this information is just out there, floating around the Internet. We didn't have to collect masks or unlock a blood-filled casket or find key cards or anything. For now, we're cautiously taking everything we read with a grain of salt, even if it is the Xbox Marketplace. We've also reached out to Capcom for confirmation of these features.Update: We have received a missive from Capcom: "We'll have further clarification in the coming weeks." Tantalizing!

Xbox Live Indie Games have had ratings since July of last year and, with the arrival of the new year, let's see how the unwashed masses (who may or may not have actually played the games) rated them. As IndieGames points out, sitting pretty atop the lists for both the US and UK is The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai developer SKA Studios' I made a game with zombies in it. Also known by its clinical title: I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1. Some other good indie fare is included in the list, along with Microsoft's almost instantly forgotten game-creator: Kodu. Yeah, remember that? Well, you can try the demo or download it for 400. Check out the full US list after the break, which could be different by the time this post goes up. The internet is fast.

  • Report: Xbox Live to generate $1B annually by 2013

A research report from In-Stat predicts Xbox Live will generate a billion dollars annually by 2013. According to Edge, Microsoft announced last July that it had reached the billion dollar mark since launching the service in 2006. The $1 billion estimate includes advertising, download revenue and subscriptions.In-Stat believes that all three current console manufacturers will continue staking out an online strategy to "generate incremental revenue and promote brand loyalty." Considering there's a growing theory that we may not have many more console generations, figuring out a stable online platform is probably best for all parties.

  • Loads of new game trailers on XBLM

If you haven't powered on your Xbox 360 today, you're missing out on a boatload of new trailers. In all, we've got Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (girlish squeal!), Overlord (which we can't download for some reason), and a trailer for Conan. Conan, perhaps, deserves the most attention. Unfortunately, that's not because it's the best of the three (far from it, in fact). Not to be confused with the Age of Conan MMO from Funcom, Conan, quite frankly, just looks awful. The gameplay looks decent enough, but the graphics lack anything even resembling polish. Seriously, it's like they decided to release a trailer of an alpha build (which may be exactly what it is). The character models themselves look alright, but they seem completely separate from the environment, like they're really in front of a green screen. Joystiq seemed to be impressed by the game back in March, so we remain hopeful that the final product will be a solid experience.

Brady Quinn, that all-star quarterback from Notre Dame, has officially joined team Xbox 360. And what the heck does that mean? It means Quinn will chronicle the road to draft day including his training regimen, life events, practice, gaming sessions, and what he likes to do to relax. Starting this Friday on Xbox.com Brady will post a weekly blog and HD videos will also hit the Xbox Live marketplace. This weekly insider access will come to an end on April 27th with a Game with Fame session. So, for all you Brady Quinn stalkers, you've officially hit the motherload. For those of you who are less than impressed ... just move along, stay clear of the grills, drop the booze, and avoid anyone wearing face paint.[Thanks, Jonah]

  • Xbox Live Video Marketplace downloads stalled by glitches

    by
    Richard Lawler

    11.24.2006

The two biggest questions since Microsoft announced its Xbox Live Video Marketplace have been: 1. does anyone still has enough space on their Xbox 360's 20GB hard drive for movie downloads in high definition? and 2. does anyone -- even the guys at Redmond -- have enough bandwidth to feed the HDTVs of millions of Xbox Live subscribers? Since launching two days ago those questions have been answered with a yes and resounding no, respectively. Users have complained of slow downloads that time out, receiving different files than the ones they requested and being charged twice when trying to complete timed-out rental downloads. Major Nelson has chimed in on the issue, letting us know that the company is aware of the problem and will refund Microsoft Points to all those who call 1-800-4MYXBOX for assistance. Good luck with that, though, as at least one person was told there aren't any managers available to refund customers until after the holiday weekend. So while network engineers and management sleep off yesterday's turkey and camp out for cheap plasmas, you may want to hold off trying to download Clash of the Titans in 720p 'till things get straightened out.[Thanks, WiFiSpy]Read - My Xbox 360 video rental nightmareRead - Video Marketplace Status

  • Microsoft to take a bite out of "consumables"

    by

    08.15.2006

Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade and Marketplace have been hot topics this week, especially following the announcement of XNA Game Studio Express on Monday. Speaking at Gamefest 2006, Microsoft has further clarified some of their plans to enhance their online nexus of downloadable demos and managed microtransactions, most interestingly annoucing their intention to make a meal out of Marketplace "consumables." As enticing as the prospect of downloading a slice of lemon meringue pie might be, the experience is considerably dulled when you have to watch your in-game character devour it. Items that would be considered as consumables would be ones that you could purchase multiple times and whenever you needed them, and the example cited by the 1UP article points to this being a potentially ludicrous concept. Let's say your level 54 sorcerer (call him ... Tim) is in need of a Phoenix Down, but your party doesn't have enough gold to purchase one. Solution: rather than traipsing through a dungeon and obtaining items from slain beasties (why was that dinosaur carrying a potion?), you could be hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace and buying more gold. So, let's see if we understand how this goes. Use your real money to buy Microsoft's fake money to buy fake gold in order to buy fake potions from a fake in-game marketplace. Obviously, this is a rather extreme way of looking at consumables, but it certainly provides food for thought -- especially so should you consider the fact that by purchasing the game, you've ostensibly purchased the entire game world, marketplaces and overpriced inns included. Thankfully, just as with any marketplace transactions, it's still up to you to decide when something is worth the extra money and when it isn't (hint: equine items of protection).

  • Table Tennis demo now available on Live Marketplace [Update 1]

If your eyebrow is still in a raised position with regards to Rockstar's foray into the explosive, prostitute-less world of Table Tennis, be sure to grab the newly served demo from the Xbox Live Marketplace. Coming in at 526MB, the curtailed code should give you fine opportunity to beat innocent balls senseless and engage in more back-and-forth whacking than a Sopranos episode. Feel free to gawk at the shiny graphics and the ball physics, but don't make the crucial mistake of forgetting to press the green button. You can be sure that Conrad's sister will capitalize and promptly crush your ego in the palm of her adorable hand. Update: Major Nelson made this addition to his blog: "Hey, I forgot to post that this is a limited time demo. (sorry about that) That means that you can only download it and play it until the end of August. After that...the title will not work, even if you have already downloaded it! So get it and play it while it lasts!" Looks like someone's worried the demo might be a little too good.

  • 400 XBLM points for free -- sort of

Outpost.com is selling 1600 Marketplace points for $14.99 (the usual price is $20.00). Over the weekend, the status of this deal was "Call for Availability." However, they seem to be back in stock now. The site is also selling 12 and 3 month Live subscriptions for $54.99 and $29.99 respectively. That's $10 off of a three month subscription and a full $15 off of a 12 month subscription. 360 Fanboy does not endorse this site, and I have no idea how reliable it is so, buy at your own risk. Anybody scored any other deals lately? [Via The Hottest Deals]

Bethesda Softworks has announced the availability of a new plug-in for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. PC users can download Mehrunes' Razor at the Oblivion download store for $2.99, while it will cost Xbox 360 owners 250 Microsoft points at the Xbox Live Marketplace. This new, "fully-featured quest" enables you to explore the largest dungeon in Cyrodiil, in search of a weapon that has the ability to destroy enemies instantly. With a weapon like that, who needs horse armor?[via GameBanshee]
