  • Analyst speculates Netflix's Xbox 360 partnership

One of our favorite analysts, Wedbush Morgan Securities' own Michael Pachter is shoveling coal into the Netflix / Xbox 360 partnership rumor train, speculating that their partnership is real and a deal has already been signed.Pachter speculates that Netflix has already partnered with Microsoft to offer movie rentals through the Xbox 360 based on comments made by Netflix's management during their recent analyst event. During the conference, Netflix management mentioned interest in "internet-enabled video game consoles" which Pachter believes is not only a hint that Microsoft and Netflix will partner, but that it's actually a good move for both companies. "The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions" says Pachter. "The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure." Can you say IN-TER-EST-ING?

We've finally gotten our act together and are bringing you this very Friday edition of Video Marketplace Weekly to get you in the mood for a weekend full of lazy XBVM movie rentals. Usually we talk a quick and dirty recap about what new movies became available this past week, but this time there really is no need. There isn't a need because one movie rental is all you should care about. There Will Be Blood. This film is a masterpiece, a Daniel Day Lewis epic and true actor's acting movie that will knock you down only to stand you back up and knock you over once again. There Will Be Blood is a must see. And know that you're getting your downloading money's worth too, because the HD version clocks in at a ginormous 7.2GB in file size, where every MB is worth the wait. Go. Rent. Now.

Microsoft recently announced that G4 TV has added a part of their television lineup to the U.S. Video Marketplace, of which two shows are already available for purchase. G4's animated series Code Monkeys, snowboarding reality show The Block and daily tech news show Attack of the Show (sorry, no X-Play) are all up for purchase for 160 Microsoft points each. Though, for whatever reason, Attack of the Show is currently missing in action. Also, as an introductory promotion, G4 is offering up Code Monkeys' "Dave's Got Boobs" episode for free, so grab the 242MB episode if you're interested.[Thanks, StLouisRibs7734]

  • Video Marketplace Weekly: it's Sunday edition

    05.25.2008

By golly we have another Video Marketplace Weekly first, because today is the first time ever in the Video Marketplace Weekly feature's existence that it is making its debut on a Sunday. Why a Sunday? Well, we could feed you a list of made up excuses, but we think our relationship is at a point where we can be 100% honest with eachother. The reason is very simple ... we forgot. Shame on us! Shame! Shame! Shame! But look on the bright side, you still get a complete and comprehensive list of new U.S. movie releases to the XBVM albeit a day or two late. Enjoy, be happy and maybe rent a new movie release off the Marketplace this lovely Sunday evening.

  • Video Marketplace Weekly: Sweeney edition

Last week's massive list of new Xbox Video Marketplace releases was best described as massive, though the amount of actual good movies wasn't there. But this week it's a total flip flop. This week's U.S. XBVM only received seven new releases, but one of them is Sweeney Todd. A Johnny Depp movie, which means we whole heartily approve. Heck, this week there's even National Treasure for cheap, which too is a good movie (though there isn't an HD rental option). Check the list of new releases after the break, because even though the list is slim, you may find something you enjoy.

We're going to be honest with you, because that's what we expect you expect from us. This week's list of new U.S. Video Marketplace releases is massive which results in this edition of Video Marketplace Weekly being massive as well. Almost too big. There are new movie rentals that range from Paris Hilton's The Hottie and the Nottie to old-school Michael J. Fox Teen Wolf to The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. There's absolutely no way we can group or categorize the randomness and quantity of new XBVM releases this week. Take a look after the break for a list of this week's new XBVM releases which, we must say one more time, is massively massive.

Spring is finally springing and that means rain, rain and even more rain. It's just what happens this time of year kids. That's why this edition of Video Marketplace Weekly is so important, because if rain ends up spoiling your normally fun filled outdoor activities, you know there's always a freshly baked movie waiting for you to rent off the Video Marketplace. And even though this week's releases aren't all that new or exciting (except for The Kite Runner), we're sure you can find something in the XBVM catalog. Stay dry, stay indoors and spend those points.

Making its way back to its normal Friday time slot is yet another Video Marketplace Weekly and this week we have a bunch of new movie goodness. That is if you enjoy toxic horror movies or comedic gold, because Toxic Avenger Part II and III as well as Toxic Crusaders: The Movie released to the U.S. Video Marketplace. Also, the Steve Carell comedy Dan in Real Life released which, we'll admit, has to feature one of our favorite movie covers. Probably because we like pancakes and listening to them as if they were a bowl of Rice Krispies. Anyway, make you way to the break to digest this week's U.S. Video Marketplace new releases.

  • Rumor: Netflix's new partnerships to include the 360

    by

    04.23.2008

In news that's heavily saturated in rumor oil (trans fat free though, don't worry) and is probably a huge stretch even for a rumor, Netflix recently announced that they've entered into three new partnerships that will "let subscribers watch films streamed directly from the Web to TVs". Three new partnerships that are all said to be with major companies. Three new partnerships that they are keeping secret and will announce soon. You see where we're going with this?It has been no secret that Netflix has been kicking around the idea of using the Xbox 360 to grow its subscription service and their announcement of three new partnerships could ultimately lead to Microsoft being one. But, like we said, this is a huge stretch. Microsoft already has a lot invested in the current Video Marketplace setup and the addition of Netflix would throw a huge wrench into things. That is unless there's piles of cash to be made ... so, maybe?[Thanks, Greg Lawson]

It's time for another installment of Video Marketplace Weekly and we have a fun fact: Did you know there has been only two editions of Video Marketplace Weekly that have appeared on Saturday, with one of them being today? Did you also know that when Video Marketplace weekly appears on Saturday instead of its normal Friday time slot, it's usually due to the writer forgetting totally about it? It's interesting and true. This week, we'll keep the wordage down to a minimum, because all you really need to know is that I Am Legend is on the Marketplace and in juicy HD glory. We think you'll agree that killing zombie-vampires will never look so good. But there are other new video rental gems as well, so we advise taking a jump towards the break to read about all eleven of them. Sound like a plan? Good. Head towards the break as soon as you can.

Remember when you were a wee little guy, getting up early on Saturday morning and pouring a bowl a cereal all to catch the entire three hour block of Saturday morning cartoons? Those were good times. And if the childhood experience you just envisioned took place sometime during the mid 1980s, we bet your cartoon viewing habits probably included feline-tastic Voltron. The same cartoon that's now available on the U.S. Video Marketplace where, for a limited time, you can download the very first SD episode of Voltron for free! So, re-live your childhood, pour some Fruity Pebbles, plunk down on the couch and watch some Voltron.[Thanks, ccc]

Wow, this came out of nowhere. U.S. Xbox.com users will notice a newly revamped Video Marketplace section and no, it isn't just a new coat of paint. It's a complete re-construction of Xbox.com's XBVM section that actually makes it useful. W00t!We advise jumping right in, so point your browser to Xbox.com's XBVM area and prepare to be amazed. You can now browse the entire list of movie rentals that are available, search by title, download rank, rating or just for movies that are available in HD. Once you find a movie, you'll now be able to read its synopsis, run time, file size, pricing and more. But that's not it. All that functionality is available for television content as well with the added bonus of browsing each show and each season. They even added a coming attractions section to preview upcoming XBVM content. The amount of information available is amazing! It's also a nice compliment to our Video Marketplace Weekly feature. A big high five goes out to Microsoft for getting this up and running.[Via Major Nelson]

One of the most amazing films ... like ... evar! It's so good, you'll probably never want to watch another movie ever again, unless of course Javier Bardem stars in it. Click towards the break to see what other movies made it onto the U.S. Video Marketplace this week. You deserve it.

Yes, we are fully aware we're a day late on this one and we apologize for it. We know how much you love your Friday edition of Video Marketplace Weekly, but this Saturday edition is just as filling, satisfying and all with 40% less sodium. Your heart with thank you. And this week the U.S. Video Marketplace gets a rather solid lineup with movies like The Exorcist, Raging Bull and the semi-new flick Into The Wild. Which is one of those award movies that carries the "love it" or "hate it" recommendation from friends. Click towards the break for your day late dose of weekly Video Marketplace intake and begin your weekend rental spree. Microsoft needs your money.

Microsoft and the Safran Digital Group have just settled on a deal that'll have Safran creating six short running series' that'll premiere on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace sometime this Summer. Safran, who we're told is a new web production company, will more than likely create content targeted towards the 18-34 demographic with media in the horror, comedy and science-fiction genres. Details are still extremely light as we are yet to hear whether the content will be available worldwide, distributed for free or advertiser driven. And, if by chance, the video shorts end up being free and entertaining, we'll make Safran an honorary member of our elite cool kids club.[Via IGN]

Every once and while, the U.S. Video Marketplace doesn't offer up huge blockbuster movie rentals and, sadly, this is one of those weeks. That isn't to say this week's Video Marketplace Weekly isn't full of movie fun, it's just to say that the movies being offered aren't all that spectacular. That said, our fellow fanboys who love them some funeral entertainment will be in rental bliss this week with the release of both Death at a Funeral and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Click towards the break to browse this week's U.S. Video Marketplace movie rental additions and be sure to have a happy weekend of renting!

    03.21.2008

It's a holiday weekend and one would think that our U.S. Video Marketplace would receive some new Easter-themed movies for rent. But, alas, this edition of Video Marketplace Weekly has no such thing and no Easter cheer will be spread. Instead, movies like Malibu's Most Wanted, Robocop and Poltergeist II will have to fill your Easter weekend movie rental itch and that's just how it has to be. It may not be eggsellent or eggstravagant (huzzah!), but the XBVM does have new releases and that's all we can ask for. Hop on over to the break and check out the complete list of this past week's new XBVM movie rentals.

On this edition of Video Marketplace Weekly we're getting wiggly with joy, because there's a handful of new movie rental releases. New movie rentals that run the genre spectrum from kids television shows like The Wiggles all the way to some R rated Gone Baby Gone. Another way to put it, this week's U.S. Video Marketplace is like a Chinese buffet holding a variety of types and flavors of movie rentals. And yes, we did just compare the Video Marketplace to a Chinese buffet. So, go dig in already, fill your plate up with new movie rental knowledge and make your way towards the break where we've listed this week's new movie rentals. Just stay away from the kung pao chicken, because it will wreak havoc on your digestive track.

Ahh yes, the 80s. When neon colors ruled fashion, TMNT were teh hawtness, hairstyles defied gravity and the movies were all so simple. And this week, Video Marketplace Weekly is taking you back twenty some years to those times with the release of a handful of 80s flicks. Movies including the Keaton edition of Batman, Bull Durham, Purple Rain, A Fish Called Wanda and Back to School. But you don't have worry. We know there are a select few of you out there who don't embrace the awesomeness that was the 80s, so for you, there are also newer releases like March of the Penguins and Fierce People. No matter what your tastes, hopefully you find something rental worthy tonight after browsing this week's XBVM releases which we conveniently outlined after the break. Take in the 80s, live the 80s, love the 80s.
