  • The Red Star to shine on PSP and iPhone this spring

The Red Star never had its chance to reach an audience. Originally in development by Acclaim for Xbox, the game was delayed when Acclaim ceased to exist, and didn't make it into stores until 2007 (well after the PS3 launch), when XS Games published the PS2 version to generally positive (and occasionally effusive) reviews. XS just announced that it's giving the alternate-universe Soviet shooter-brawler game another shot at success, by releasing downloadable versions of The Red Star on PSP and iPhone. We have no idea how the game will play on an iPhone, but the PSP has buttons very much like a PS2 controller! The publisher offered an "early spring 2010" release date for both versions, which sounds like soon.

  • PopStar Guitar's slip-on fret sheath exposed

Okay, so the prophylactic jokes are strong with this one, but bear with us as we attempt to stick to the straight and narrow about XS Games' PopStar Guitar for Wii. It's a game that, if this were an SAT exam, would be to Guitar Hero as Mini-KISS is to KISS: somewhat short of the real thing. The screen shots look rather simplistic and, of course, familiar, but what stands out is the sheath accessory that slips onto your Wiimote, giving you four (yes, just four) fret buttons to manipulate while you "strum" with the Nunchuck. After a few hours of this we think you're more likely to be in a wrist brace than rock 'n roll heaven. It's an experience you can feel for yourself when the game hits stores at the end of the month.

We're yet to write about Popstar Guitar, Midway and XS Games' Guitar Hero rip-off that takes "derivative" to a whole new level. There are several very good reasons for this, two of which you can find after the jump, and five of which you can see here. But at least the peripheral that comes with the game, this odd-looking Wiimote sheath, is interesting enough to warrant a mention. MTV's Patrick Klepek went hands-on with the add-on yesterday and reportedly found it ... pretty uncomfortable. Still, it's not really for hardcore blog-reading types, and as Klepek points out, $59.99 is a heck of a lot cheaper than the alternative. No pinkie-destroying fifth button, though? Kids these days!%Gallery-34682%

Don't tell us the delay for Commando Steel Disaster was caused by a bunch of web developers anxious to show off their fancy animations before the game was released. The official website for this hot run-and-gun title has gone live, and is an admittedly cool little package featuring screenshots, concept art and the original trailer. That trailer is good and all, but this is a war those badass little sprites are fighting. Get some fitting tunes and the blood will really rise! Commando Steel Disaster is set for an release on August 19 in North America, so there's plenty of time to get in some Metal Slug action before then. It's pretty much the same thing.%Gallery-18362%[Via press release]

Remember when we said that Commando: Steel Disaster's early-May release date "puts Commando mostly out of the way of the late-May/early-June rush of action-oriented DS games?" As it turns out, that's not the case. Lexicon Entertainment announced today that the game would be delayed until May 30th in Europe. You know, right around when every other DS game and their mother comes out. Many of the late-May through July dates are for the North American region, but we're assuming that a lot of you English-speaking Europeans import games without tangible release dates because of the cheap dollar. Does this delay push this game off your radar, then, in favor of other things? Gallery: Commando: Steel Disaster [Via press release]

Previously announced for a Q3 release in the U.S. from XS Games, Mana's Metal Slug-ian shooter Commando: Steel Disaster is now coming out on May 6th, published by Take-Two subsidiary Jack of All Games, according to Gamestop. While we don't know about the release date, the publisher information is consistent, since Jack of All Games distributes XS's releases in the U.S. (according to the original press release). We want to believe this listing ourselves, since it puts running and gunning in our hands sooner. And it puts Commando mostly out of the way of the late-May/early-June rush of action-oriented DS games.%Gallery-18362%
