Urban legend confirmed. Atari did dump a pile of its E.T. game cartridges into a landfill in New Mexico and it's thanks to Microsoft's recent documentary efforts that we've gotten some closure. This leads your hosts to ponder the situation that led up to the cast off games and what it meant for Atari at the time. Inevitably, Terrence recalls his own Atari experiences as a youth, sitting down with a second-hand console and blasting away the hours with Yars Revenge. Ben is perfectly fine to sit back and listen -- he was a Nintendo kid, after all. But soon enough, he sets his gaming-honed gray matter in motion and delivers a cogent explanation about mobile privacy rights. It's all packed into this one episode, so head on down to the streaming links and feed your brain with the Engadget Podcast. It's delicious! This week on XBLA in Brief, we take a look at the reboot of the Atari 2600 title, Yar's Revenge. Suffice it to say that Yar's Revenge has less to do with the original and much more to do with games like Panzer Dragoon and Sin & Punishment. In other words, it's a brightly colored, anime-inspired, on-rails shooter. Lock your cursor on the "continued" button and guide yourself past the break to watch the latest episode and see if Yar's Revenge is for you. Also, for those of you looking for Clash of Heroes HD, rest easy. We'll have a full review soon. [iTunes] Subscribe to XBLA in Brief directly in iTunes. We can't imagine what it must be like to be an Air Traffic Controller in Killspace's upcoming, on-rails shooter, Yar's Revenge. Judging by these screens, we can only imagine the hectic comm chatter: "Okay, Jim, now fly right. No! My right! Look! We made an empty spot in the gaggle for you."

Maybe you've convinced yourself that you just dreamed Atari was publishing a downloadable remake of Yar's Revenge, with Miyazaki-inspired artwork and a storyline about one humanoid "Yar" soldier. It does make more sense as dream logic than something that would actually happen. But nope! It is happening, and continues to happen, as evidenced by the video after the break. As producer Michael Fahrny discusses the art style of the reimagined shooter, you'll see plenty of concept art and even the first gameplay footage, which reveals a cool, rail-shooter type of game.

The downloadable Yars' Revenge reboot spotted in Atari's earnings report has been officially revealed. Yar's Revenge (even the apostrophe placement has been rebooted!) is an anime-style game following one rogue Yar (an insectoid creature) fighting the evil Qotile forces that had previously brainwashed her. Speaking to Big Download, producer Michael Fahrny said Yar's Revenge "is now a third-person arcade shooter experience in which a Yar flies through visually stunning Miyazaki-inspired landscapes while fighting a wide variety of memorable enemies." Basically, you'd have no idea it was supposed to be a remake of the 1981Yars' Revenge if it wasn't for the game title. Landscapes? Variety? Miyazaki-inspired? Quite a step from that psychedelic "neutral zone" and the single Qotile laser cannon behind a shield found in the Atari 2600 game. "If you like games like Panzer Dragoon or Star Fox," Fahrny said, "then Yar's Revenge is right up your alley." This new Yar's is the work of Killspace Entertainment, a studio formed by EALA, Obsidian, Red 5 and Pandemic vets. Check out a trailer after the break, and try to remember, it's for Yar's Revenge.

Atari has gone fully old-IP-crazy, having just released a remake of Haunted House. New Asteroids, Star Raiders, and Centipede games are also on the way, not to mention direct ports of old games on DS and XBLA. We can add Yars' Revenge, the hit shmup about shooting through a thick shield to gain access to the delicious enemy center, to the list of properties being dredged up again. Atari's first-half financial results briefing (PDF here) lists Yars' Revenge as a Q1 2011 release for PSN, XBLA, and PC. Now we'll see the destruction of that smug, well-protected Qotile in glorious high definition.

Atari has a new website. We know -- big deal, right? Actually, in this case it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the company's classic arcade and console games. That's because the site is offering up free-to-play browser-based versions of Adventure and Yar's Revenge for the Atari 2600 and the legendary coin-ops Battlezone, Crystal Castles and Lunar Lander. The site's Arcade page is at this link, should you not want to risk an encounter with dreaded marketing materials on your way to the good stuff. Remember: If your boss catches you blowing up vector tanks and space rocks while you're on the clock, you didn't hear about the site from us.
