  • Older PS3s losing 'install other OS' option in Thursday's firmware 3.21 update

Bad news, Linux fans. The older PlayStation 3 consoles are losing one of the features they could tout over their Slim successor. Firmware 3.21 is coming out this Thursday, April 1st, and its major raison d'être is to kill the "install other OS" option. (This is "not an April fools joke," as the PlayStation Europe blog clarifies.) "Security concerns" is the cited reason, although we're sure that doesn't make you feel much better -- no one likes the loss of a feature, even if it wasn't being used. Those who wish to keep Yellow Dog or Fedora running can opt to not upgrade, but skipping out means losing the ability to access PlayStation Network and play games online, among other things. DARPA enthusiasts notwithstanding, we can't say we know many people still running Linux on their console, but if you count yourself among the few and proud, our condolences. Them's the breaks, but hey, at least some of you still have PS2 compatibility.

  • Get your PS3 pre-installed with Linux

As my good friend Pat said to me in one of my lesser moments, "Damn it, it's Linux (Lynn-ux), not Linux (Lie-nux). People will think you're talking about that Charlie Brown kid." So true... just so I get my blue blanket. In any case, this news comes from TerraSoft -- those guys behind YDL (Yellow Dog Linux) and all that stuff. They're accepting pre-orders for PlayStation 3's that they've already installed a Linux OS on in addition to the PS3's native OS.TerraSoft has said their PS3's will ship with "a DVD, installation guide, sticker, and "flippy" -- presumably a dog toy". Hopefully it's yellow, too. That would be greatness. This is a pretty bold maneuver by TerraSoft and one that would've been keen from day one, though we're not altogether disappointed that it wasn't. Now those not hardware-inclined (like yours truly) won't have to look all over the place for very obvious tutorials and can continue to be concerned with knowing about the software of the past, distant past, and future. Right?

  • Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for PS3 now available for free -- how is it?

It's been kinda sorta available since mid-November, but it wasn't since the past week or two that Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 was freely available (i.e. you didn't have to pay $100 for the DVDs) to make all your open-source PS3 dreams come true. Granted, they've made it pretty damned difficult to find the free version online, but supposedly it's a done deal. For the uninitiated, anyone looking for a more refined and pre-packaged approach to getting Linux on their PlayStation 3 should look no further than the Yellow Dog for Sony's officially sanction build; so what we want to know is, for those lucky and brave enough to have a PS3 and try to install Linux on it (respectively), what have your experiences been like with the Dog? Has it been worth your while? We're still holding out until Ubuntu gives us the love we crave. Well, that or until the OSS community get started on making an XBMC-like PS3 interface, since Sony believes all of your home's media should live on the PS3, and not on a media server. Right.

By now, you guys know I'm not exactly the voice of intellect when it comes to operating systems and hardware specs -- even so, I'm going to try to do this bit justice. Linux's Yellow Dog 5.0 will be ready for you to download Install and Source ISO's on the 27th from www.ydl.net. To be exact, on the 27th you can "Download Install & Source ISOs via YDL.net Enhanced." Perhaps my wording was off. What does this do, exactly? It appears that it pretty much updates the website for you, allowing you to access a full-fledged mailing list as opposed to the help desk Linux has used for eight years. Great? Great. I've not had the pleasure of using Linux, so if anyone wants to throw in some extra jargon explaining this or that, knock yourself out. All we know is that if you've got a PS3, you had better keep your Yellow Dog up to date! Why wouldn't you, after all?

  • Yellow Dog Linux to be used on Playstation 3!

A friend attending Wake Forest learned his way around the Linux OS last year and switched to it full-time from the Windows OS also on his laptop. With that superiority in mind (at least, one example of Linux being the favored OS) we can see why Sony would choose a flexible system like Yellow Dog Linux to power their next system. The OS will ship with the PS3 in November and soon after, support the Apple PowerPC line. Now, correct us if we're wrong, but wasn't it talked about a long time ago that PS3 would support Linux systems? Now we know that it's Yellow Dog, but the whole Linux thing isn't exactly breathtaking news. It's most assuredly cool, though. You can check out any sort of specs or other technical tidbits over here, but the point is the same: PS3 hearts Yellow Dog Linux, and you will too.[thanks to everyone and their uncle who sent this in!]

Terra Soft has confirmed on its website that Yellow Dog Linux will be compatible with the PlayStation 3. Few other details are given, though video demonstrations are promised as coming soon.Sony has as recently as August shown interest in bringing Linux or OS X to the console. Terra Soft's confirmation indicates that they either (a) are wishful thinkers or (b) have made a deal with Sony to bring their Linux variant to the super computer/game console behemoth. Video demonstrations might suggest they have a dev kit in house, but those have yet to materialize. We've sent off a list of questions to Terra Soft; we'll let you know what we hear.See Also:Sony to support homebrew with Linux on PS3[Via Engadget; thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
